    Ring door lock | Schlage

When you combine a Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt with Ring video doorbells and cameras, you get the best security features that both have to offer so you focus on everyday life.

Just as you rely on your entire car – seatbelt, airbags, brakes – to keep you safe, you should be able to rely on your entire entryway – door, deadbolt, frame – to protect your home and family. That’s why, even though we make locks, Schlage encourages you to take every precaution and ensure your security fits your needs and lifestyle.

You might think of a smart lock-security camera bundle as your home’s version of a front-collision warning system, which uses cameras, lasers and other technology to keep you safe while you focus on driving. When you combine a Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt with Ring video doorbells and cameras, you get the best security features that both have to offer so you focus on everyday life.

Schlage Encode smart wifi deadbolt on front door with Ring video doorbell.

What are the advantages of a home security camera?

There are many advantages to installing a video doorbell or camera on your front door beyond peace of mind. Some of the tangible benefits include:

    • Make intruders think twice. Sometimes just seeing a camera will deter thieves from even attempting to enter your home, so make the camera obvious.

    • See who’s snooping. If someone does try to break in or steal a package, video footage of the event could help to identify the culprit.

    • Know when deliveries are made. Most of us have received a notification that a package was dropped off only for it to go MIA, either because the delivery wasn’t actually completed or porch pirates swiped it.

    • Know who’s in your home. See when your kids or service providers come and go.

    • Screen visitors. Whether you’re at work, don’t want your kids to answer the door for a stranger or are simply too comfortable to get off the couch, see who’s knocking without actually going to the door.

    • Improve resale value. A growing number of homebuyers are looking for smart home technology included in the deal.

    • Lower home insurance payments. Some companies will reduce your premium when you add security measures.

Why should I trust my home to the Schlage Encode lock and Ring?

Bundling your Schlage Encode deadbolt with a Ring camera or video doorbell lets you take advantage of the lock’s best features and then some. All Schlage products come backed with 100 years of experience in keeping your home secure. Add to that our limited lifetime warranty and you can be confident you’re getting the quality and durability you expect and need.

It’s more than that, though. The Schlage Encode deadbolt offers greater levels of convenience from the minute you install it to the countless moments you use it every day. There’s no hardwiring needed during installation and because of its built-in WiFi, no hub is required for remote access. Check the lock’s status from anywhere, so you never have to worry or make a return trip home to doublecheck if your door is secure. Create and schedule up to 100 access codes so the people you trust most have access only when you want them to. And don’t forget about Alexa. Ask the voice assistant to lock and unlock your door (you’ll verify the unlock command with a PIN) and make the lock part of your favorite Alexa routine.

Bring the Ring Video Doorbell into the mix you put even greater security and convenience at your fingertips. Lock and unlock the door directly from the Live View of your camera in the Ring app. This is perfect for when you get held up in the office or at the airport and need to let a dog walker or babysitter in the house. Or maybe you want to unlock the door for a friend while you finish dinner in the kitchen.

It’s not just about the “Ring door lock,” though. You also get the benefit of being part of the Ring community. With Ring’s range of devices and accessories, you can protect your home in more ways than just securing the front door. Consider adding compatible smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as well as flood and freeze detectors as part of your complete home security. There’s even a Ring Neighbors app that helps communities work together for a safer neighborhood.

With this flexibility and customizable options, you can easily update your surveillance as your needs change. It’s the perfect way to build the right security system with only the features you want and trust. Plus, when you choose Schlage and Ring, you’re choosing two of the industry’s leaders in home security, doing exactly what they do best. Can you think of a better way to peace of mind?

Schlage smart locks and Amazon Alexa | Schlage

When you take advantage of the benefits of home sharing, you want the experience to be simple for you and enjoyable for your guests. Smart locks and electronic deadbolts can help achieve that.

Schlage smart locks offer superior convenience at your fingertips. And with Amazon Alexa, you don’t even need your hands for some of the best features. By integrating your Schlage smart lock with an Amazon Alexa device, all it takes is “Alexa, lock the front door” or “Alexa, is the side door unlocked?” for peace of mind without any hassle. Here’s what you need to get started.
Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt in matte black with Century trim on front door.

Which Schlage smart locks are compatible with Amazon Alexa?

All of Schlage’s smart locks are compatible with Amazon Alexa. In a few cases, you will need to connect the devices via an adapter or smart home hub. However, the Schlage Encode™ family of products, because of their built-in WiFi, do not require additional hubs or accessories.

    • Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt, Z-Wave Plus: Aeotec hub, Homey Pro hub, or Ring Alarm base station

    • Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt: No hub required

    • Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Lever: No hub required

    • Schlage Encode Plus™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt: No hub required

What can Amazon Alexa and Schlage smart locks do?

Sometimes it just feels like work to set up another home automation feature – so why is it worth it to pair your Schlage smart lock with Amazon Alexa? Here are our favorite features:

    • Lock and unlock the door with a simple voice command. If you’re elbow-deep in dishes but forgot to lock the door, just say “Alexa, lock the side door” – simple and easy.

    • Check the status of your lock. No more internal battle of whether to get out of bed at night to check the status of your lock – all you need to do is say “Alexa, is the front door locked?” for instant peace of mind.

    • Set up automation routines. With Amazon Alexa, it’s easy to set up automation routines like “Goodnight Alexa” to turn off lights, shut down connected devices and lock the door. We love an efficient bedtime routine.

How does the voice unlock feature for Amazon Alexa work?

The unlocking feature is disabled by default for your security. Log in to the Amazon Alexa app and enter your password to enable this feature in the locks device settings. When you enable unlock by voice, you will be required to set a four-digit PIN, which must be spoken before Alexa will unlock the door. When you say, “Alexa, unlock the front door,” Alexa will ask for the PIN. If the PIN is correct, Alexa will unlock the door. After three attempts to unlock the door with an incorrect PIN, Alexa will disable the unlocking feature and the door will remain locked. You can re-enable the feature by logging into the Amazon Alexa app and repeating the process.

What should I do if my spoken pin is compromised?

Log in to the Amazon Alexa app to change your PIN as needed. We recommend changing your PIN at regular intervals just as you would a computer password.

Can the unlock feature be used with Amazon Alexa smart home routines?

Both locking and unlocking can be included in Amazon Alexa routines.

In which countries is the Amazon Alexa voice unlock feature enabled?

This functionality is currently available in the United States only.

Smart door locks vs. traditional deadbolts: how to choose

Mechanical deadbolt vs. Smart lock | Schlage

We’ve weighed the pros and cons of mechanical and smart locks to help you choose the best deadbolt for your home.

Choosing the right deadbolt requires more than picking out the best deal on the shelf. When you want to keep your home and family safe, you need a lock that fits your lifestyle and provides security you can trust. We’ve weighed the pros and cons of traditional deadbolts and smart locks to help you choose the best deadbolt for your home.

    Lock Security

Schlage mechanical deadbolt and smart lock with blue check marks.

Look for locks that are graded for your security needs. The  Builder’s Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA)rates locks for security, finish and durability. A grade of ‘C’ is good, ‘B’ is better, and ‘A’ is best. Nearly all Schlage locks, both mechanical and smart, are rated AAA, so you can have peace of mind that your home is protected with long lasting strength and durability when you choose Schlage.

If we had to give an edge to mechanical deadbolts or smart locks for the security category, it would probably go to our smart locks. All Schlage smart locks have the same security and durability features as our single cylinder mechanical deadbolts, but also provide additional safety and convenience features. For example, the  Schlage Encode™ family of locks each come with a built-in alarms, so you’ll be alerted if there’s a disturbance at the door. And when you’ve enabled your smart lock for remote capability, you’ll get that alarm notification on your phone, even when you’re not home.

    Keyless convenience

Schlage mechanical deadbolt without check mark and smart lock with blue check mark.

If you live an active lifestyle, keys can be a drag. It's a pain to walk the dog or go for a run with keys bouncing in your pocket. And good luck trying to find a secure place to hide the key until you return. For all those times you come home with your hands full – controlling the dog on his leash, after grocery shopping, carrying the kids – you certainly don’t want to be fumbling around to unlock your door.

Unique access codes for your smart lock allow you to enjoy a simpler way to access your home. With the touchscreen or keypad, which are either illuminated or back-lit so there’s no guessing in the dark, you can stop the balancing act. And for a premium keyless experience, the Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt works with Apple® home keys, so you can simply tap to lock and unlockwith your Apple Watch or iPhone using the digital key stored in your Apple Wallet®. This head-to-head win goes to smart locks.

    Access control

Schlage mechanical deadbolt without check mark and smart lock with blue check mark.

If you have housekeepers, friends or other service personnel who need access to your home when you're not around, how will you make that happen? With a mechanical deadbolt, you’ll need to either hide a spare key or make an extra for them to keep. Unfortunately, this means they’ll have access to your home at any time of day or night. And don’t even get us started on how easy it is for a potential intruder to find the spare under a fake rock.

For better control over who has access to your home and when, choose an electronic lock. All you need to do is program a unique access code for each trusted person and decide if you want their code to work all the time, only at certain times of the day or only until a certain date. This is useful for a babysitter who may come to your home frequently but should only be there during a specific time window or when you’re asking a neighbor to walk the dog while you’re on vacation and want to give them a code that is only active for a week.

One more feature that gives the edge to smart locks in the realm of access control: The Schlage Home app. Use the app to see when codes are used and to track the access codes you’ve assigned to friends and family. It’s just one of several secure ways to store your codes so you can have confidence to know who has access to your home at what times.

    Not getting locked out

Schlage mechanical deadbolt without check mark and smart lock with blue check mark.

How many times have you shut the door on your way out only to realize that you left your keys inside? And there’s probably more than one story about your kid losing or forgetting their key, forcing them to wait alone on the porch until you get home. To avoid an expensive call to the locksmith or the risk of your child problem-solving with a creative – yet likely unsafe – entry point into the house, choose a smart lock.

We’ve already talked about keyless convenience and access codes, but when your smart lock has remote capability, you can also use your smart phone to lock or unlock the door for trusted visitors. A few taps in the app and you can let your kids in the front door even while you’re still at work.

Don’t worry about getting locked out because of battery failure on your smart lock, either. Schlage smart locks will alert you when your battery is running low with an indicator on the lock itself and a notification in the Schlage Home app. You’ll have plenty of advance notice to swap in fresh batteries.

    Cost value

Schlage mechanical deadbolt and smart lock with blue check marks.

Before considering cost value, it is important to take stock of your lifestyle and the lock features that will best support your needs. Electronic locks are generally more expensive on the outset but provide time savings and ease of access that can reduce costs and hassle in the long term. Features like remote locking and unlocking, timed access codes, built-in alarms and real-time activity logs are worth the investment if you are constantly on the go or can’t always run home from work when the need arises. Most electronic locks are priced anywhere from $100-400 depending on the number of features and level of security they offer – make sure to choose the features that will add value to your routines and provide you with the best peace of mind. If budget is a concern but you still want to go high-tech, consider an electronic deadbolt that does not have home automation capabilities, like the Schlage Touch™ Keyless Touchscreen Deadbolt.

Traditional mechanical locks are also available at a range of price points and are typically less expensive than electronic locks. While they may not have a slew of advanced smart features, traditional locks can be a dependable and stylish option for protecting your home. When deciding how much to spend on a traditional lock, consider how frequently you are coming and going – you want to choose a lock that will look good and give you peace of mind for years to come. Schlage mechanical locks are made with premium materials and supported by a limited lifetime warranty and customer care, so you can have confidence that they will protect what matters most – today, tomorrow and beyond.

Whichever type of lock you choose, remember to factor in those BHMA security grades before you buy. A cheap lock could be more likely to wear down, causing you to spend more in the long run towards repairs and replacements. A cheaper, lower quality lock could also work less effectively in the first place, putting the people and things in your home at risk.

    Easy to install

Schlage traditional deadbolt and smart door lock with blue check marks.

The only clear winner when it comes to installation is you. Installing a Schlage lock – whether mechanical or smart – is simple. All you need is a screwdriver and a few minutes’ time. Our How-To Center has step-by-step tutorials and videos to walk you through a quick and hassle-free installation.

Our deadbolts are also designed to fit on all standard door preps, so there’s no drilling or resizing required to put them in place. And if you’re not tech-savvy and the words “electronic” and “smart” make you nervous, not to worry. Our locks are battery-powered, no hardwiring required, so you can install Schlage smart locks on your own - save the call to your local handyman or electrician for a tougher job.

    Style options

That being said, Schlage electronic locks do come in a variety of sleek designs to fit any home’s style– whether modern, transitional or traditional. And with a nice selection of finish options, Schlage electronic locks are easy to suite with the rest of the hardware throughout your home.

How to fix a door that won’t latch.

What to do when your new lock doesn’t fit your door - Schlage

Use this checklist and our suggestions to get your new lock and door working in perfect harmony.

You’ve just bought a new lock and for some reason it’s not fitting on your door and locking like it should. One possible reason for this is that your door isn’t properly aligned. Poor alignment can occur because your house has settled or shifted over time, the door frame is old or warped, or the door is sagging on its hinges.

Luckily, fixing the alignment of your door doesn’t have to be a chore. Use this checklist and our suggestions to get your new lock and door working in perfect harmony.

Woman installing new lock on door.

Identify why your door doesn't shut properly

    1. Does your door easily latch during certain times of the year but not others?

If your door closes and latches easily during some seasons but not others, this may be a sign that changes in temperature or moisture are causing your door to warp, even just temporarily. We recommend waiting until it is not fitting properly to make adjustments at that time.

    2. Is weather stripping causing your door to fit too snugly in its frame?

Weather stripping is great for minimizing drafts and noise. Just make sure that it is not so thick that it obstructs the bolt or prohibits it from entering the door frame’s bolt pocket. If weather stripping is the culprit behind your lock struggles, try changing to a thinner weather strip or adjusting the strike plate.

    3. How to tell if your door won’t latch because of a strike plate issue.

When you adjust the strikes - the metal plates that surround the bolt or latch pocket in the door frame – it is important to first determine where the bolt is catching. If your door won’t latch in the strike plate, slowly lock and unlock the deadbolt several times. The deadbolt is probably hitting or rubbing on just one or two sides of the bolt strike. You will want to know where those points of interference are. This Old House has a great tip: Put some chalk – lipstick also works – on the bolt before locking and unlocking it. You’ll then be able to see a chalk smear on the strike where it is rubbing.

At that point, you’ll know where to remove obstructing material in the bolt hole using a chisel. You can also use these steps fromFamily Handyman to learn how to raise or lower the strike plates if your alignment is off by a larger margin.

    4. Do you have to push, pull or lift your door to lock it? How to fix a sagging door.

This can be caused by different things, and so there are a few possible corrections you can make. First, check to see if moving the bolt strike helps. If your knob or lever also locks, it may help to move the latch strike as well. For example, if you have to lift your door to lock it, that could be a sign that your bolt or latch is hitting the bottom of the strike rather than extending fully into it. Use the steps above to adjust the strike.

Trouble locking your door can also occur when worn or loose hinges cause your door to sag. Here are two options for how to fix a sagging door. You can replace the hinges so that they fit more securely on the door frame. Or you can add shims under the hinges.

    5. Is the bolt pocket 1” deep?

If the bolt pocket is not deep enough or placed correctly, the bolt cannot extend fully, making it so your door won’t latch. This can be corrected by enlarging the bolt pocket or changing the strike plate. To make the bolt pocket deeper, taller or wider, depending on where your bolt is dragging, use a chisel on the bolt hole until it is 1” deep and allows the bolt to fully extend without dragging.

If enlarging the bolt hole doesn’t fix your door that doesn’t shut properly, check the existing metal strike plate, which could be affecting the bolt pocket’s depth. Remove the strike plate from your door frame and use the deadbolt strike supplied with your Schlage lock instead. The supplied strike is the correct size and shape to allow the bolt to extend and retract as intended without dragging.

If you continue to experience minor rubbing of the bolt on the top or side of the strike plate, you will need an alternate strike and security plate with additional clearance. This replacement part is available by contacting  Schlage customer support.

Parts of a door lock and door hardware terms defined.

Homeowner’s guide to door hardware terminology | Schlage

From backset to bore, strike plate to spindle, we’d like to help you understand some of the more common terminology and help unlock the sometimes mysterious and occasionally confusing world of door hardware.

Whether exploring the world of door hardware online at websites like schlage.com or visiting your local home improvement store to purchase door hardware that meets your specs for security, performance and style, it helps to be able to talk the talk.

From backset to bore, strike plate to spindle, we’d like to help you understand some of the more common terminology and help unlock the sometimes mysterious and occasionally confusing world of door hardware. It’s actually easier than it sounds. Once you get the hang of it, your knowledge of parts of a door lock will help you tackle hardware upgrades in your home with ease. We’ll also provide some practical understanding of the various door lock types and security options available to you.

Let’s start with the parts of the lock you’ll typically find in the box when you purchase door hardware from Schlage.

Chassis and Trim - Door Hardware - Glossary - Schlage

    Parts of a door lock

    Chassis:

Like your car’s engine under the hood, the chassis is the internal body of the lock with the unseen working mechanisms inside the door. Among other things, the chassis determines if your lock's function is Privacy/Bed & Bath, Passage/Hall & Closet or Combined Interior. Visit schlage.com to see a variety of mechanical and electronic options including the latest smart locks.

    Trim:

Sometimes called a rose, the trim is a decorative plate attached to the door under the knob or lever. Depending on the lock you choose, there are a variety of available trim styles and finishes to meet your specific preferences. Updating your door hardware with a decorative trim is an easy way to make a big impact if you are looking to enhance the overall look and style of your home.

    Deadbolt:

Deadbolts are one of the strongest methods of securing a door. They are operated only by using a key from the exterior or thumbturn from the interior. For those who want premium security and keyless convenience, smart deadbolts provide an easier way to lock and unlock your doors. A deadbolt is typically installed on exterior doors above a knob, lever or grip for a handleset to ensure that entry into your home is protected and secure.

Escutcheon - Door Hardware - Glossary - Schlage

    Escutcheon:

This refers to any plate, including trim and handleset plates, that surrounds a keyhole or lock. It protects the lock cylinder from being drilled out, providing you with additional security. The Escutcheon also protects the surrounding area from being scratched by a key.

    Faceplate:

A metal plate on the edge of the door, next to the latch or deadbolt, the faceplate protects the lock from wear and tear. It may have rounded corners or be a circular drive-in faceplate. The shape of the faceplate used during installation depends on your door’s preparation.

    Backplate:

Used with a rounded corner faceplate, the backplate is installed with the latch so that it is positioned between the faceplate and the latch bore (the hole where your latch enters the door).

    Latch bolt:

Sometimes abbreviated as latch, this is the type of lock that has a beveled, spring- operated bolt that engages when you close the door. If you’ve ever accidentally locked yourself out of your house or a hotel room, you know a door lock latch well.

    Spindle:

The spindle is the bar that connects knobs or levers through the door to operate the lock mechanism.

    Strike plate:

Similar to a faceplate, the strike plate is a metal plate that is affixed to the doorjamb and has a hole (or holes) that accommodate the lock bolt. It is not only decorative. The strike plate protects the doorjamb and adds security to the opening.

Installing door strike plate part of door lock.

    Other door hardware terms

Beyond knowing the parts of a door knob, there are a few more terms you might find helpful when it comes to purchasing and installing your door hardware.

    Backset:

The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center line of the prepared cross bore hole drilled to install most locks. With all installations, there are minimum and maximum measurements required for your lock to be compatible. Schlage locks are designed to fit all standard doors with a 2-3/8” or 2-3/4” backset.

    Bore holes:

Bore holes are the holes in the door that house your door hardware and allow it to be installed. The cross bore is the main hole drilled into the face of the door where the body of the lock (chassis) is installed. The latch bore, also known as the edge bore, is the hole drilled from the side of the door into the cross bore to allow the latch of the lock to be installed and to accommodate the sliding of the deadbolt. The diameter of the latch bore is generally 1” to accommodate bolts from either mechanical or electronic locksets.

    BHMA:

This stands for the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association. This independent organization ensures the quality and performance of builder’s hardware through a grading system that evaluates the hardware’s endurance under laboratory conditions to simulate real-world usage. The grading system is expressed alphabetically (A, B and C) and looks at three different categories: Security, Durability and Finish. AAA is the highest rating a product can receive.

BHMA Residential Door Hardware Grade Label

    Handing:

Handing is a term used to indicate the direction a door swings. This is important to know when choosing a compatible lock for your use. A left-handed lever has the door hinges located on the left side as you look at the door’s exterior. A right-handed lever has the door hinges located on the right side of the door as you look at it from the outside. For more information, check out our blog post on understanding lever and door handing.

When purchasing a new set of exterior locks, it simplifies entry to have all your locks keyed alike. Learn how to key locks to meet your specific needs.

Purchasing a new set of exterior locks leads to a safer, more secure home. Any time you replace exterior door hardware, it is helpful to know your keying options. Most exterior locks purchased in-store come with a unique key. That means if you purchase multiple exterior locks at once, they will each have a different key required for access. This can be a hassle. When purchasing a new set of exterior locks, it simplifies entry to have all your locks keyed alike. Explore the options below to learn how to key locks to meet your specific needs.
Man unlocking front door and walking inside home.

Order online for free keying options

When you purchase Schlage locks online through Build with Ferguson, there is a “free keying option” for you to select before adding a product to your cart. From there, you can choose to have your new locks keyed alike, keyed different, or enter a key code to match your new lock to pre-owned locks. This free service is a great way to save time and money, making it cheaper to replace locks that you want keyed alike.

    Hire a locksmith

If you are struggling to figure out what you need to upgrade your exterior door hardware, a licensed, registered locksmith is worth the investment. They can evaluate your needs and give personalized advice so you can choose the best keying option for your home. They will have the tools and expertise to take your project from the idea stage through to an installed solution, giving you complete confidence in your new locks. The cost to hire a locksmith will vary depending on your location and the scope of the job, but it is important to choose a licensed lock professional you trust.

Check with your local hardware store

Many local hardware stores offer re-keying options to customers. We suggest calling ahead to see if your preferred hardware store provides this service and to learn how much it will cost. Schlage locks with a cylinder, whether a mechanical lock or smart lock, can be keyed alike or rekeyed according to your needs.

    Opt for keyless locks instead

Eliminate the need for keys altogether by choosing a lock with a keypad or smart lock. This is especially convenient when you have multiple family members or service providers frequently coming and going. At Schlage, we have a variety of keyless locks to best fit your goals. How to install a door lever

Here are all the steps you need to follow to properly install a door knob or lever in just a few minutes.

Updating your interior door knobs and levers is the perfect project to take on when every detail matters for your home. Coordinating a new style and finish with your lighting, plumbing and other décor is an easy way to give your home a finishing touch. And with the right durability and security, it also can help you protect what matters most. Fortunately, door hardware installation is one of the simplest DIY projects.

Before we get to the step-by-step guide, be sure your door is properly drilled and aligned with this door prep checklist.

Next, gather your door hardware installation tools. It’s simple – all you need is a tape measure and a screwdriver. Keep in mind that an electric drill is not recommended for installation as it can easily strip the screws and damage your hardware.

    Door lock installation checklist

Now you're ready to get started installing your door knobs or levers. The first step is to ensure you have all the parts. Here's a checklist to help. If there are any terms you don’t understand, check out these definitions for parts of a door lock.

    Parts of a door lock

Outside housing: The "exterior" portion of your hardware with the spindle extending from the back

Inside housing: The "interior" portion of your knob or lever. For privacy knobs and levers, you'll want to be sure the push-button lock is on the inside

Latch: The spring-operated bolt with a beveled face to permit a latching action when the door closes

Round drive-in faceplate: An optional faceplate that may replace the rectangular faceplate already attached to the latch if your door calls for it

Strike plate: The metal plate that will be affixed to the door frame

Short screws: Used to secure the latch and faceplate to the door

Tapered long screws: Used to secure the inside housing to the outside housing

Pin tool: Used only for installing lever door handles that are curved and may need to change handing

Door Knob and Lever Installation instructions

1You'll begin by preparing the latch.
    door knob latchbolt

The latch comes with a pre-attached rectangular faceplate. If you’re using the rectangular faceplate, continue to Step 2 now.

If you need to replace it with a round drive-in faceplate, follow steps a-c below. You'll need a flat head screwdriver, hammer and block of wood with this setup.

    a. Remove faceplate by gently prying it away from the rest of the latch component with a flat head screwdriver.

    b. Twist and remove remaining support plate.

    c. Install round drive-in faceplate with just a snap.

2Now we install the latch. If you're using the standard rectangular faceplate, slide the latch into place with the bevel facing the doorjamb and secure with the two short screws.
How to install a door knob

If you’re using the drive-in faceplate, slide the latch into the latch bore with the bevel facing the doorjamb. Gently tap it in to place, using a block of wood to protect the latch, until the faceplate is flush with the door edge.

    Installing round faceplate latch

3Next, you'll install the strike plate on the doorjamb using the two short wood screws.
    Door strike plate

4Begin installing the lever or knob by placing the outside housing first. Remember, this is the part with the spindle extending from the back. If you're installing a lever, you'll want to make sure the lever is pointing away from the door edge.
    Lever and door knob installation

5Align the spindle with the slot in the latch and slide into place.
    Door lock installation

6Now install the inside housing. If you're installing a lever, orient the lever just as you did with the outside housing, pointing away from the edge of the door.

7With the screw holes in a vertical position, align the square in the back of the door knob or lever with the square spindle. Slide the inside housing into place.

8Secure with the two remaining screws.
