As Style and Design Chief for Allegion, maker of Schlage locks, Ted Roberts and his team of designers seek out and apply the most relevant and high-impact design trends across a variety of industries to create hardware that makes everyday life more convenient while elevating the style of the home.
Inheriting an analytical mindset from his father and an interest in fine arts from his mother, Roberts focuses on how things work, as well as how they look. He’s spent more than a decade combining the practical with the artistic, designing door hardware across various brands, ranging from residential and multi-family to commercial and mixed-use.
Having been at Allegion for more than 11 years, Roberts took on a leading role for the brand’s 2016 design collective—ELEVATE—a first-of-its-kind alliance that brought together six industry-leading home design brands, including Delta® Faucet Company, Formica Corporation, Hunter Fan, JELD-WEN®, KitchenAid® and Schlage, to highlight home accents within home style and interior design conversations. From a New York loft revamp to helping to develop a one-of-a-kind PANTONE color used throughout the space, Roberts served as an alliance and brand spokesperson.
Early in his career at C.N. Burman Co., a lamp manufacturer, Roberts designed and engineered products from scratch. He later joined Baldwin Hardware as their sole designer where he was not only responsible for all aesthetic work, but learned about manufacturing as he engineered his designs and saw them through production in the plant on site. It’s during this role that Roberts gained experience designing a wide variety of items ranging from lighting to door hardware and giftware.
As a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, Roberts combined his interest in art and technology to earn a degree in Industrial Design.
