From its original patents to the latest smart lock technology, Schlage's history consists of more than 95 years of innovation.

The first smart home device.

1909

The first smart home device.

Ahead of today’s smart home by more than 100 years, Walter Schlage patented a door lock that also turned the home’s lights on and off.

Schlage Lock Company is Born.

1920

Schlage Lock Company is born.

Walter Schlage opens his own lock shop, developing tools to manufacture the first push-button locking mechanism.

The cylindrical pin-tumbler lock.

As an alternative to the mortise lock, the standard of the day, Walter Schlage advances the new cylindrical pin-tumbler lock by adding his push-button.

Push-button lock revolutionizes industry.

The Schlage Lock Company goes into full-scale production of the new push-button lock from its brand-new production facility.

Modern pioneer honored.

Walter Schlage is honored with the Modern Pioneer Award for outstanding American inventors by the National Association of Manufacturers.

Mr. Schlage passes.

Walter Schlage, “the Lock Wizard,” dies at the age of 64, securing a timeless legacy that endures to this day.

Expansion.

The Schlage Lock Company begins more than a half-century of growth with an acquisition strategy that continues to bring innovative, new products into the fold.

Lovely locks...The jewels of the home.

This Schlage ad appeared in magazines in 1958.

1961

Beauty where it shows, quality where it counts.

Schlage's ad campaigns in the early 60s featured entryways designed by architects. The one featured in this ad was designed by Anshen & Allen.

Acquisition.

Schlage is acquired by Ingersoll Rand and becomes part of the Ingersoll Rand Door Hardware Group.

1975

Going global.

Schlage, still part of Ingersoll Rand, acquires lock manufacturing facilities in New Zealand, and a global brand is born.

1976

Rocky Mountain High.

Schlage continues its domestic growth with the opening of a new production facility in Security, Colorado manufacturing standard locksets and handcrafted hardware.

Bold move.

Schlage relocates its administrative offices to Colorado Springs, Colorado, as part of aggressive growth initiatives which continue to this day.

2002

Kryptonite.

Schlage acquires Kryptonite, the renowned bicycle lock manufacturer, to further diversify its product offerings.

It's electric.

Schlage releases the King Kobra Digital Lock, a manually programmable electronic access control lock.

Connected.

Schlage announces its first connected door lock, a wireless battery-powered lock that works with Z-Wave smart home systems.

Team effort.

Schlage joins Home Depot to provide entry and indoor locks for 24 Habitat for Humanity homes in Colorado Springs.

Brand awareness.

Remodeling Magazine brand use study reveals Schlage as the most recognized brand among remodelers from among brands in 46 product categories.

First built in alarm.

Schlage launches the first residential door lock with a built-in, instant-on alarm, that provides an additional layer of security.

On guard.

Schlage spearheads a national neighborhood safety initiative in conjunction with National Neighborhood Watch and the USAonWatch crime prevention program.

Go keyless.

The new Schlage Touchscreen Deadbolt Lock puts keyless entry and built-in alarm technology at users’ fingertips.

ELEVATE Design Collective unveils a revitalized urban Soho loft designed in partnership with Jennifer Schmidt during New York Design Week. The event showcases Single Malt, a new signature color developed by the Collective at the Pantone Color Institute.
