In this, the second of our two-part post on preparing your current home for sale and moving into your new one, we have outlined five steps to make the most of your move with a number of easy, DIY solutions.

Step 1: Secure

There are a number of things you should do first thing to make your new home as secure as possible.
 

• Make sure your insurance coverages and information are up to date. If you need new home, property or flood insurance, now’s the time to find out.
  
  
• Create a new, easily accessible emergency contact list, especially if you’ve moved some distance from your old home.
  
  
• Replace the batteries (if applicable) in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and make sure all of these systems are in good working order.
  
  
• Replace fire extinguishers, making sure you have enough strategically placed so you can access them easily from all corners of the house.
  
  
• Activate the home security system if there is one installed or install a new one (a home without a security system is more than three times more likely to be broken into.)


• Change all the locks in your home, as there’s no telling how many sets of old keys are floating around out there. Options range from re-keying current locks to replacing your exterior locks with the latest keyless smart locks. Some of these can even be controlled from anywhere on your smartphone.

Step 2: Assess

Did everything arrive – and arrive intact? Is your new home clean and ready for you to move in? Is everything working as it should be?
 

• Check all appliances, boxes and furniture for moving damage and don’t hesitate to file a claim with your mover if anything is amiss.
  
  
• Clean before you unpack. This is the perfect time to deep clean, including getting vents and ductwork professionally cleaned.
  
  
• Plan where you want all your furnishings to go before you start moving things around.
  
  
• Organize drawers, closets and storage now, before you actually start packing them full.
  
  
• Check all home systems – from HVAC to electric service to utilities – to make sure everything has been hooked up, set up and is operating to your liking.

Step 3: Settle In

It’s time to unpack, unwind and start enjoying the fruits of your labor. The end is in sight. According to our friends at The Spruce, organization is the key.
 

• Determine your color scheme and decorating needs before you settle in and do as much of your painting and staining as possible before moving day.
  
  
• Develop a plan for unpacking and decide where you want things to go before you open that first box.
  
  
• Apply that same thinking to setting your furnishings, creating vignettes on your shelves and decorating.
  
  
• Unpack one room at a time, starting with the kitchen before moving on to bedrooms, bathrooms and larger, multi-use rooms (in that order).
  
  
• Make sure you’re getting your mail. This isn’t something you want to discover was overlooked a week into your new home.

Step 4: Connect

Do friends and family know where to find you (well, the ones you want to find you, anyway)? Do you know who to call should you need anything? Make a list!
 

• Don’t hesitate to ask your realtor for their list of contacts. He or she is a great resource for everything from plumbers and painters to local take-out.
  
  
• Update your own contact lists, from family and friends to those all-important emergency numbers to local services.
  
  
• Get the lay of the land. Where is the nearest good pizza? How about the nearest pharmacy? Your nearest Lowe’s or The Home Depot? Scope it out.
  
  
• Reach out to your immediate neighbors and introduce yourself if they haven’t already taken the initiative.
  

Step 5: Celebrate

Five steps to selling for more

Here are five simple rules when staging your home to sell. Other handy links throughout, like this one to Realtor Mag, will take you to even more in-depth explorations.

1. Depersonalize:

Potential buyers want to see themselves in your home. Removing photographs and other personal items that reflect specifically on you, your family and your interests allow for buyers to fill in the blanks with imaginings from their own lives. Removing such items, packing them up and investing in a small self-storage unit will pay huge dividends for a relatively small investment.

 

At the same time, set the dining room table as if you were expecting friends over for dinner, set up your front porch for entertaining and clean off the back patio or deck and stage it for a barbeque or garden party. You want your guests to see themselves living there. And loving it.

2. Maximize:

You’ll want to make your home feel as expansive and livable as possible. Start by decluttering – a self-storage unit can help with this, too. 3. Sanitize:

Your home can’t be clean enough. A spotlessly clean home tells a bigger story about just how much you cared for and maintained your home. Perception is reality. Scour the bathrooms and the kitchen, using water and bleach to remove mold and mildew. Really work to clean every nook and cranny. Scrub and polish floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets and any rugs you decide to leave about. Wash your windows. Clean and polish appliances (inside and out). Dust and wax furniture and bookcases. We’re talking a deep clean here.

 

You might consider a bonded and insured professional cleaning service that is experienced in cleaning for home sellers. This is where your realtor can come in, so don’t hesitate to use him or her as a resource for finding anything you might need. Here are some additional suggestions from Angie’s list.

4. Neutralize:

In the continuing effort to let the buyer envision themselves living in your home, think neutral when styling and staging. Repaint key rooms in neutral colors. Decorate with monochromatic hues (for instance, using fresh, white towels in the bathroom instead of bright colors and replacing window treatments with clean, white curtains and shades). Declutter bookcases and replace half of your books with strategically placed pieces of art, vases or other simple, unobtrusive touches. These all serve to invite potential buyers to imagine your home as theirs.

 

Keeping things simple and clean – and reducing clutter – are among the easiest and least expensive ways to prepare your home for sale.

5. Modernize:

Projects you invest in to modernize your home will more than pay for themselves when you sell it. Don’t be afraid to replace old kitchen appliances. Re-paint or stain old kitchen cabinets. Replace outdated cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures. Replace that old vanity in the bathroom with a new pedestal sink. These kinds of simple upgrades – many of them weekend DIY projects or a short jaunt to Lowe’s away – will work wonders.

Do I need to do wiring? Won’t I need an electrician?

No. Schlage electronic locks are battery operated. You’ll simply route the lock’s existing wiring through the bore hole in your door to connect the exterior keypad or touchscreen with the interior thumbturn , install the batteries and you’re connected.

 

Will I need a lot of tools?

The Dempsey lever was inspired by the glamour and grace of Old Hollywood. Amy loves the glamour of the lever and the challenge of integrating it into such a space. In fact, of all the rooms she helped design for this special partnership, this turned out to be her favorite.

The inspiration

Schlage’s Dempsey lever brings a singular, unmistakable style to settings looking to make a real statement. One look and Amy knew where the design needed to go. She paired the lever with Schlage's Rosewood Trim in a lustrous yet tasteful satin nickel. The combination of the lever's distinctive curves and the scalloped look and finish provided the perfect centerpiece. The final room design featured a luxurious array of bold, contrasting colors, cut glass, lavish fabrics and reflective metals. It was truly a larger-than-life vision worthy of a star like Joan Crawford or Errol Flynn, with the Dempsey lever anchoring the entire concept.

The mood board: Unmistakable style

Amy started with the Dempsey lever paired perfectly with Schlage’s Rosewood trim. In satin nickel, it complemented the overall design without getting in the way. She then assembled the mood board, splashing it with muted greens and reds that popped along with the glitter and luster of cut glass and exotic textures. For this design, she envisioned a sumptuous bedroom suite with a large bed in greens and natural tones dominating the room. Touches like a zebra rug, a crystal chandelier, a mirrored white vanity, period wallpaper and a distinctive green door completed Amy’s vision with panache and sizzle.

The look: Inspired and opulent

Amy’s immersion in the world of “lights, camera, action” really explored the true potential of what’s possible when building an entire room around a single piece of Schlage Door Hardware. Motivated by the style, vision and innovation of designers such as Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel, Amy brought a distinctive sexiness to the look, adding sleekness to the design with a black tile floor.

Q: It’s that time of the year. What can we do to make this year’s holiday decorating special?

A: “One of the joys of holidays and winter decorating is the passion that people put into it, trying to outdo themselves year after year. And it shows. This year, you’ll see the wreaths, bows, tinsel and traditional decorations that mark the season, but I also think you’ll see a lot more imaginative lighting displays.”

Q: A bright outlook then, for the season?

A: “It’s just that there are so many options in the winter front porch lighting department. It’s the perfect place to start. I really think projected lighting is going to be big this year. It can be truly dramatic, painting a lightscape across the entire front of your house. And, for the budget conscious, these can be particularly useful because you can customize the graphics or colors and light patterns season to season. The inspiration

She wanted the Hobson knob, as specified, to complement the natural wood she’d chosen for the door and some of the furnishings. She also chose the glass and satin brass look to work in contrast to some of the blacks and pops of red and gold accent colors she crafted into the board. Neutral grays and flooring completed the picture, with the overall look reflecting Amy’s preference for clean, modern presentations.

The look: Classic yet modern

Amy and the team brought the room to life with rugs, pillows, throws, artwork and other meticulous touches that picked up the gold in the satin brass finish. She wanted the look to radiate warmth and welcome. The inspiration

The Tiny House movement can be credibly traced back to Henry David Thoreau, his 1843 Walden Pond experiment (and the book that came of it) as well as the $28 dollars he spent to build what amounted to one of the first true “tiny houses.” It was 150 square feet and featured a fireplace, a table, a desk and three chairs. Its purpose? To see if a person can eschew the trappings of luxury and live happily and comfortably with less. For less.

 

Today’s tiny house is a little bigger – around 400 square feet on average – and often includes a kitchen and bathroom. But the general concept, re-introduced in 1997 and exploding today, remains the same. How can one downsize to what is essential and important, live happily and comfortably on a budget all while serving as a steward of the environment?

 

To get a unique perspective on the phenomenon, we asked Ted Roberts, the Style and Design Chief at Allegion, to share some thoughts on tiny living and how a tiny home and its owner can benefit from the Schlage door hardware products that Ted helps design.

Q&A with Ted Roberts

Q. Why invest in the latest Schlage door hardware when part of the motivation for building a tiny home is saving money?

A. “Just because it’s tiny doesn’t make it any less of a house. In fact, these homeowners have downsized to the point that they’re only really keeping their most prized, most valuable possessions.”

 

“It may be counter-intuitive, but they actually need the better locks. From a security standpoint, there’s less between themselves and the outside world than you’d find in your typical 2,600-square-foot home. In the final analysis, how can someone afford not to have the best locks possible for their tiny house? You’ve got maybe an entrance or two and maybe an interior door, so why not get the best lock you possibly can to secure what’s important to you?”

Q. Would you say that cost, then, is the main driver behind the tiny living phenomenon?

A.“It’s one of them, for certain. The average cost of a tiny home is only around $20,000. But when you look at the costs and then factor in everything else, it’s really more than just saving money. Tiny living helps to reduce one’s carbon footprint. What’s more, the lifestyle really requires you to take stock of what’s important and make some significant decisions about where and how you want to live. It’s a little house, but it involves some pretty big thinking.”

Q. Who is buying and building these tiny homes?

A. “Believe it or not, 2 out of 5 tiny homes is owned by someone over 50 years old. Owners of tiny homes are individualists looking for something different; some fun in their lives. They’re principled, emotionally engaged, they know what they want and they go and get it. There’s a measure of pride and ownership building a home and a lifestyle like this. It’s like joining a club, of sorts, where tiny homeowners find a measure of identity and self-actualization through the investments and the decisions they make to embrace tiny living.”

“Identifying with folks like this is an important part of who we are and what we do. That hasn’t changed for us since Walter Schlage started the company in 1920. This allows us to design products for a typical home, door hardware specially made for really demanding commercial applications or, in this case, stylish and secure door hardware that fits perfectly with the style and performance needs of the tiny home.”

Q. As a style influencer, what are some challenges you’d anticipate an owner of a tiny home might face selecting the right door hardware?

A. “It’s not the hardware that’s the challenge. All of our products are refined for user experience, aesthetics, quality – all without sacrificing security. And that’s regardless of application. For the owner of a tiny home, it really is a matter of finding products that fit the style and character of their house. That’s as true of the appliances they choose as it is of their door locks. Again, a tiny house is still a house, so security, convenience, affordability and style play just as important a role in determining one’s selection of door hardware. Q. Do you see yourself living in a tiny house at some point?

A. “The simplicity, the style, the reduction of complications in one’s life – these have a real appeal to me. It’s just that by the time I made room for my more than 1,000 books on architecture and architectural design and all my art supplies, it would no longer be a tiny house!”

It was little more than two years ago that Amazon’s Echo took the holiday shopping season by storm and Google Home’s voice-activated speaker brought Google Assistant from the phone to the living room. They were taking the baton passed by assistants like Siri and Cortana who, as far back as 2011, began replacing phone apps in the search for everything from good pizza to directions to Mozart’s birthday.

 

Google Assistant is now available on more than 400 million devices, close to 95% of all Android devices, worldwide. Looking ahead, comScore predicts that half of all searches will be done via voice by 2020 with a sizeable percentage of those on a device like a voice-activated speaker – in other words, on devices without screens. From turning down the volume on your stereo to dimming your lights to locking your front door, these technologies and their application in the smart home are fast becoming the rule rather than the exception.

 

Rob Martens, President of Allegion Ventures and futurist for Allegion and their lock-manufacturing division, Schlage, looks ahead to where it’s all going. No stranger to innovation and the implementation of emerging tech, Martens has both insight and strong opinions on the rapidly evolving industry. He is responsible for identifying those mega-trends in technology that will best serve Schlage’s customers and then bringing them to life with products such as the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and the Schlage Connect™ Touchscreen Deadbolt.

Q&A with Rob Martens

Q. What was your first indication that home integration was somewhere that Schlage had to be?

A. “My focus, my responsibility, is on anything that could have a meaningful impact on our customers and our business. Anything that can significantly improve our customers’ experience with our products is something we’re going to be interested in. We first started exploring connected door hardware in 2008 and we’ve escalated our own efforts as the technologies have improved and been increasingly accepted. Schlage’s first patent was for a door lock that also turned on your lights. That was in 1909. So, I guess you could say it’s in our DNA.”

Q. So, the smart home is here to stay?

A. “I think that the adoption of the technology, and the technology itself, is so significant, I foresee a time in the very near future we’re not even calling it a “smart home” any more – just a “home.” It’s going to go from something new to something we all accept as the way things are. Our job is to make these new technologies accessible and relevant so that we remove any intimidation factor that may exist. Once we do that, you’re looking at an idea whose time has come and, indeed, is here to stay.”

Q. How has Schlage’s technology addressed this “intimidation factor” and what have you done to make your connected technologies more user friendly, particularly for voice?”

A. “Believe it or not, the way you make the technology better is by not worrying about the technology but rather what the user wants to accomplish with it. We know things are constantly changing and technology should continue to evolve with the ever-changing needs of our customers. Our focus is on applying these technologies in such a way that our customers, regardless of what system they choose for their home automation, only need one lock that works, is easy to use, is secure, and can evolve with their needs. Ideally, we’d provide one lock you didn’t need to change because of obsolescence. It’s all about our ability to continue to meet their needs whether they’re locking their door with a keypad, their smartphone or with a voice prompt. It shouldn’t matter. We need to give them a good experience, whatever their preferences. It’s not technology for technology’s sake, it has to meet a defined need.”

Q. You’re in the security business. How do you provide connectivity and convenience as well as security?

A. “That is the single most important factor we look at – for today and tomorrow – when it comes to all Schlage products. Privacy. Security. Peace of mind. That’s our job. That’s what a lock does. We start with the fact that we are in the life safety business, and we ask ourselves – especially with the integration of new technologies like voice activation – if what’s happening when you ask Alexa to lock your door is exactly what you want to happen. That’s why, for instance, you can’t ask Alexa to unlock your door without providing a security code. So, again, you take the actual technology out of it, you look at who you’re serving and what they need, and you work from there to build the technologies and products that meet those needs. Not the other way around.”

Q. That’s an interesting point of view, coming from a futurist at a company that prides itself on technological innovation.

A. “When you get right down to it, our customers don’t really care about the details – about the features and functions and bells and whistles. Does it work? Is it secure? Is it easy to use? Does it add value? We have to start there. If not, then we’re not doing our jobs. We solve for that, and then we can focus on convenience features and – also extremely important to our customers – style. So much of what happens with your home starts at the front door. It’s the ultimate first impression. We work really hard to make it a good one, and to bring our customers the security they demand, the style that reflects who they are and a great user experience.”

Q. What’s next?

A. “My job is to look at products, services and technologies that are proving disruptive in other industries – the Internet of Things and voice-activated home automation technologies are a good example of that – and then see how we can apply those disruptive elements and what they represent to our products. For us, it’s going to be the evolution of home automation tech, biometrics, face recognition and machine learning that continue to make our products relevant and current without losing sight of what our core mission is. We need to continue to listen to our customers and then safely apply appropriate technologies to our products based on what they’re asking for. We don’t try to do everything on our own. We are working with Apple, Amazon, Google and other emerging tech companies to help identify what’s next and then bring value to their technologies, all in service to our shared customers.”

According to Martens, that combination of thinking ahead and applying technology responsibly leads to important insights. For example, connecting a garage door opener to a fire alarm in a home automation system.

 

“The last thing you’d want to happen in a home fire,” says Martens, “ is for your alarm system to automatically open your garage door. While, at first blush, it would seem logical to provide such an escape route, this actually creates a rush of oxygen that can fuel the fire and make it worse. These are the kinds of problems, these unintended consequences, to which Schlage’s expertise in fire and life safety can offer solutions. We need to have the capacity to think through such issues in developing connected technologies.”

 

Connected technologies provide an opportunity for companies like Schlage to create tailored experiences for their customers. Two-thirds of smart home speaker users conduct local searches for products, services or local business at least once a week. More than half search daily and nearly one-third of them will visit the website of a local business after conducting their search. What’s more, 60 percent of them just started doing so in the last year!

 

When you factor in the rapid adoption of home automation, it’s clear that these technologies are going to continue to play an increasing role in our daily lives. Companies like Amazon, Apple, Google and Schlage – and influencers like Allegion’s Rob Martens – are going to continue to define what’s next and develop technologies, products and services that definitively answer that question.

Q. What are the key factors propelling the home-hosting phenomenon?

A. “Like so much in our changing culture, a lot is built upon rapidly evolving technologies. From a security standpoint, we’re talking an evolution of such things as security cameras, changeable lock codes, programmable security systems – a lot of which can be easily and securely controlled from your smart phone. So much of this simply couldn’t have happened before the technology caught up with the need. All the more important since the category has evolved to be so focused on personal fulfillment and satisfaction.

“We’re not just talking about renting a room. Hosts are sharing their homes and belongings, sharing meals, socializing with their guests and sharing themselves in ways we’ve never seen before. Our new smart lock technologies really assure a high level of control, trust and peace of mind.”

Q. What are some general security tips you can provide a prospective host?

A. “Hosts need to think of their homes both holistically, in terms of overall security, but also in sectors. You’re bringing people into your home. First and foremost is general house access, and a programmable electronic lock or a smart lock are ideal for exterior doors. Think of this simply as providing the convenience of an easily changeable and assignable code versus providing a key. With smart locks, you’re providing the added benefits of managing home access using your smartphone.

You’ll want to be prepared for any eventuality, whether it be providing directions, lending your guests a bicycle or your car or something as mundane as having an extra toothbrush or some toothpaste handy. Don’t forget, you’re competing against hotels, so you’ll want to be prepared to truly share of your home and of yourself. If that’s you, then welcome to home hosting.”

Q. How do I know if my house is right for hosting?

A. “So much depends on whether you’ll be sharing your home while your guests are there or are planning to be away. But in general, the ideal host home will have extra bedrooms and bathrooms, it’ll either be a private home or a dedicated apartment or condo and it’ll be conveniently located near area attractions, transportation and etc. It’ll have all the amenities a guest would look for in a hotel – from cable to internet to clean towels and bedding. Is there something unique about your residence – is it historic, famous or haunted? Is your home a place you’d want to know about if you were travelling elsewhere? If so, you’ve got yourself a great home hosting prospect.”

Q. Any other general tips?

A. “Expect the unexpected. Really try to anticipate those things you may not have thought about. Are there any legal restrictions (Does your mortgage and insurance agreements allow you to host? Do you have the right kind of homeowner’s insurance? Does your HOA or lease allow you to host?) These types of considerations are just the beginning. Are you prepared to have things break, be it appliances or personal items? What if a guest gets ill? Do you have any home safety concerns that could pose a liability? Finally, again, will your guests feel secure in your home? That’s our focus, and it has been for almost 100 years. Make sure your guests know that and give them every reason to come back again or recommend you to friends and family.”

Q. What are some of the top outdoor trends you’re seeing pop up this year?

A. We have been seeing a closer association between the outdoors and indoors, both this year and in 2017. This is reflected not only in the popularity of natural materials, textures and floral-inspired motifs throughout the home, but also in the items we see adorning porches, patios, decks, and yards. Products for exterior cooking, entertainment, decorative fireplaces, porch ceiling fans, and comfortable outside furniture all enable the extension of the living space to the outdoors. As the backyard becomes more of a destination, the door between the inside and outside commands new importance. Many of the technological features of the front door are now equally important to back and side doors.

Q. What are the trending styles, colors and types of door hardware for exterior doors?

A. Exterior doors are getting larger and making more use of windows. On the front door, it’s common to see one large window, either frosted or textured, to allow light in without offering those outside a clear view into the home. The back door may have a clear window to further blend interior space with the exterior porch, patio, or deck. We’ve even seen windows covering almost the entire door, further supporting the idea of bringing the outdoors inside. We are also seeing a trend towards rich, saturated color used selectively throughout the home as a statement and combined with muted warm tones. This is especially true on front doors where yellow, purple, red, emerald green, cobalt blue all can be used to make a statement. Stained wood doors also remain popular, with stains trending darker and richer. For hardware, matte black stands out as the perfect color to coordinate with every choice of door color. We are even seeing door frames in black.

Q. What sort of technology trends are you seeing in the outdoor space?

A. Smart locks continue to gain popularity because they can add so much convenience to daily life. The idea of being able to secure the house, yet securely allow access to the homeowner without a key is appealing regardless of the door used. Keeping track of the kids as they come and go, and having control over the door lock from wherever you are can offer major peace of mind. As these features become standard at the front door, the expectation for other doors to adopt the technology increases. These locks strive to enhance and simplify life through technology. Today is the birthday of an absolutely iconic American architect: Frank Lloyd Wright. Born on June 8, 1867, Wright was more than just an architect – he also dabbled in interior design, writing, and teaching, and you can easily see his influence still alive today in some of the most well-known design trends.

 

We sat down with Ted Roberts, our Style and Design Chief, to tell us a little more about Wright and how he has influenced home and interior design today.

Q&A with Ted Roberts

Q. What kind of designs was Frank Lloyd Wright known for?

A. “What’s interesting about Frank’s work is that it spans a pretty long period of time, so he worked in several different styles. The style of his early work is Prairie, where the colors and materials are somewhat similar to Arts & Crafts, but more focused on the social aspect of the space. There was a lot of focus on combining the interior and exterior of the home – bringing outside materials inside and blending the two. These styles tend to be lower to the ground, with a lot of horizontal lines and built-in oak woodwork, stone, with colors of ocher, brown and green. One of his strategies for merging the interior and exterior of the home was to create ‘walls of windows’ – large stretches of glass that opened the home up to the outside environment.

His next period is known as Textile Brick, which took place in the 1920s and 30s during the Art Deco period. This was his version of Art Deco in fact, which featured a combination of smooth surfaces and highly ornamental stone and block patterns.

Usonian was his last major style, which began in the late 30s until his death. This style was very organic, incorporating curves and straight lines but with a more asymmetrical aesthetic that featured a lot of odd angles.”

Q. What was Wright’s overall philosophy toward architecture?

A. “Over his entire lifespan, you can see that his work evolved so as not to become outdated, but his primary philosophy always stayed the same – it was only the strategies he used to carry out that philosophy that changed. Wright always believed that architecture was at its best when it was honest to its environment, incorporating local materials and a design that is harmonious with its natural surroundings. Falling Water is the perfect example of this philosophy – it’s a beautiful home built with local materials from the ground up that melds with its surroundings in a way that feels totally natural.

Wright also believed that the needs and character of the owner were important to the design, as well. While community and having shared space was important to him, Wright was loyal to the American ideal of individualism. With the industrial revolution and standardized, repeatable designs becoming the norm, he was always striving for a unique style different from the Victorian and Edwardian homes that were popular when he first began his career.”

Q. What is Frank Lloyd Wright’s legacy today? Where do you see his influence?

A. “Wright’s philosophy of personal independence and blending into nature can still be seen in both architecture and interior design today. But his most important contribution has been the emphasis on open spaces. The Edwardian and Victorian architecture that was popular during his early days featured a lot of very closed off, formalized spaces. Wright opted for an open floor plan that is very popular today because it allows families to interact even when they are in different sections of the house. No one is siloed – there are the standard private areas, bedroom and bathroom, but there is also more opportunity for connection and socializing in an open floor plan.

 

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Wright though is simply his notoriety. I think most people, at least in America, would name him as the one architect they’re aware of – even though there are so many others with comparable talent. His impact and recognition level is very impressive and just go to show how iconic his designs could be – especially when you think about how many of his designs have become museums.”

When it comes to exterior door hardware, quality matters for both security and aesthetics. You need to choose a lock you can trust to keep your belongings and loved ones safe and secure. Door hardware grades

The first step to finding the most secure exterior door hardware for your home is to look for hardware that has been tested against the highest industry standards, like the BHMA residential grading system. BHMA is a group of industry experts who grade residential door hardware performance in the categories of Security, Durability and Finish. A grade of ‘C’ is good, ‘B’ is better, and ‘A’ is best. A grade of AAA is the best grade possible in all three categories.

Now that you understand how to find the best possible grade (AAA) for deadbolts and locks, here are a few additional features to look for when choosing the most secure lock for your home:

Anti-pick shield

Many Schlage locks come with an integrated anti-pick shield to provide added security. The shield doesn’t impact the look of the lock, but it does strengthen it against lock pick attacks.

1-inch bolt with spinning pin

Schlage locks come with a solid zinc 1-inch bolt for added kick-in resistance. This is larger than many bolts on the market, and it does make a difference in security. Because of this larger, sturdier bolt, Schlage locks require a larger bore hole than those required by competitors. Widening the bore hole may take an extra few minutes if you’re switching from another brand to Schlage, but the added security is well worth it.

 

Schlage bolts also include a hardened steel pin inside that spins in response to sawing attacks, so it can’t be cut through. Plus, a half inch of the bolt remains in the housing when locked for even more kick-in resistance.

Longer screws

Schlage offers a strike reinforcement plate with 3-inch screws that also add more kick-in resistance. Be advised though, if you have a sidelight (a window that runs parallel to your door on the side that latches), the 3-inch screws may be too long to use. This is one of many reasons that sidelights should be avoided as they are a security liability.

Sleek profile

A low profile face on a deadbolt makes it just about impossible to grab with a wrench or pull off.

Take your lock strength and security a step further with a keyless, electronic lock. Here are a couple more attractive security features that are specific to electronic locks only:

Completely keyless

Some locks, like the Schlage Touch™ Keyless Touchscreen Lock, don’t come with a key cylinder. Many homeowners feel comfortable having a backup key option, but the truth is that once you adopt an electronic lock, it is highly unlikely you’ll ever need a key again. Most electronic lock users stop using keys completely, given how easy it is to share access electronically or with an access code. With a low battery indicator and up to 1-year battery life standard across our electronic locks, you don’t have to worry about getting locked out and needing that key (just don’t ignore the indicator!)

 

But it’s not just easy – it’s more secure. With no cylinder on the lock, there’s no opportunity to pick the lock or create a fake ‘bump’ key to bypass it.

 

Even if you don’t go completely keyless, electronic locks make it possible to completely eliminate the need for spare keys that can easily fall into the wrong hands. Just use access codes that can be easily created and deleted as needed. Plus, with no spare keys floating around, there’s no need to ever rekey the lock.

Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter

The Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter lets you lock and unlock your Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt from anywhere with your Android smartphone or your iPhone®. This means any time you can’t remember whether you locked the door behind you, or would like to let a friend in because you’re running late on the way home, you can use the app to check the lock status and lock and unlock with just a tap.

 

The adapter is easy to use and takes up minimal space – if you plug it into the bottom outlet, you’ll still have a plug available on top. Just plug the adapter in and use the Schlage Home app to pair it with your deadbolt and connect it to your home WiFi network for anywhere access. The adapter can support up to two Schlage Sense locks at a time, and does not work with Apple HomeKit or Siri voice control.

 

In order for anywhere access to stay connected, the Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter must stay plugged into power at home, connected to Wi-Fi and in Bluetooth® range (about 40 feet) from the lock.

Amazon Alexa

If you pair your Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter with your Schlage Sense lock, you’ll be able to use hands-free voice control with Amazon Alexa-enabled devices like Amazon Echo and Dot. Learn more about Alexa features here.

Google Assistant

Similar to Alexa, if you pair your Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter with your Schlage Sense lock, you’ll be able to use hands-free voice control with Google Assistant-enabled devices like Google Home. Learn more about Google Assistant features here.

Apple TV / HomePod / iPad

If you love Apple products and your entire household uses iPhone rather than Android, you can program your lock to work with Apple HomeKit. This option won’t allow for any Android compatibility, but it will allow you to pair your lock with other HomeKit-enabled devices to customize your Apple-centric smart home experience. You can also use the lock with the Home app that comes built into the latest iOS.

 

If you have an Apple TV or a HomePod, pairing with your Schlage Sense lock will allow you to connect to your lock from anywhere to make sure the door is locked or let a guest in while you’re running late. You can even use an iPad with the latest iOS as a smart home ‘hub’ that pairs with your lock to offer anywhere access, provided the iPad stays plugged in at home where it can connect to your lock through Bluetooth.

2. How do I connect my Schlage Sense lock with Google Assistant?

In order to use the Schlage Sense lock with Google Assistant-enabled devices, users must connect the deadbolt to the Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter, sold separately. Follow the setup steps within the app to link your Schlage account with your Google Assistant account, then add the Schlage action. Once connected, users will be able to access their lock using voice activation.

3. Which Google Assistant voice activation commands work with the Schlage Sense lock?

Google Assistant users can lock and check the status of their Schlage lock. This offers consumers the peace of mind and convenience of knowing their homes are always locked and protected by one of the strongest, most convenient locks on the market.

4. Which Google Assistant voice activation commands will not work with the Schlage Sense lock?

Schlage Sense does not support voice-activated commands for unlocking and maintaining user codes. To celebrate the two-year anniversary of the unveiling, we’re catching up with Jennifer Wagner Schmidt of JWS Interiors to reflect on the impact the ELEVATE Design Collective has made in the world of interior design.

Q&A with Jennifer Wagner Schmidt

Q: What have you been up to since we last worked together? Any fun projects you care to share?

A. "So much has happened in 2 years! The Elevate project was such a great experience and project to work on with everyone. JWS Interiors garnered new clients as a result of the project, which has been great!

We recently completed a whole house project here in the DC area. A unique, modern take on farmhouse style, the Piet Boon designed home was one of my favorite projects to work on. JWS Interiors was tasked with the design of the entire home. We were thrilled when Elle Decor featured it as a whole house tour this past March."

Q: Looking back, how did the Elevate project change your view on door hardware? Have you found yourself recommending it to clients?

A. "Working with Schlage was great for me a designer. I learned so much about hardware in general; the project also made me focus more attention on this important detail when designing!"

Q: Since Elevate, Schlage has launched the Schlage Custom Door Hardware line – what do you think? What is your favorite, style and finish?

A. "This was a really smart idea-it allows the homeowner or designer to really tailor the hardware to the project/home. I'm always partial to clean, modern lines, so the Custom Latitude Lever with Upland Trim was a clear winner in my book! The Matte Black finish looks amazing!"

Q: What features of Custom do you see being most useful in consumers’ homes?

A. "Anytime you have the option to customize your look--whether that relates to fabric, finishes, or in this case, the style of hardware & finish-- without spending a lot of money--is a win-win. The customer gets exactly what they want - no compromise when it comes to style or function."

Q: Lastly, a fun question, what Single Malt product did you secretly want to take home after the Elevate Design Collective loft unveil?

A. "The Hunter Ceiling Fan was really different and modern. I loved the wire caged industrial feel!"

At the time of the initial integration between Schlage smart locks and Amazon Alexa, voice unlocking was not available. However, because technology improvements now allow Alexa to authenticate the user’s identity prior to unlocking the door, you can enjoy the feature’s additional convenience and still know you’re getting the superior security you expect from Schlage. 1. Which Schlage smart locks are compatible with Amazon Alexa?

All of Schlage’s smart locks are compatible with Amazon Alexa. In most cases, you will need to connect the devices via an adapter or smart home hub. Only the Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt, with its built-in WiFi, does not require additional hubs or accessories.

2. How does the new voice unlock feature for Amazon Alexa work?

The unlocking feature is disabled by default for your security. Log in to the Amazon Alexa app and enter your password to enable this feature. Then you will be required to set a four-digit PIN, which must be spoken before Alexa will unlock the door. When you say, “Alexa, unlock the front door,” Alexa will ask for the PIN. If the PIN is correct, Alexa will unlock the door. After three attempts to unlock the door with an incorrect PIN, Alexa will disable the unlocking feature and the door will remain locked. You can re-enable the feature by logging into the Amazon Alexa app and repeating the process.

3. What should I do if my spoken PIN is compromised?

Log in to the Amazon Alexa app to change your PIN as needed. We recommend changing your PIN at regular intervals just as you would a computer password.

4. Can the unlock feature be used with Amazon Alexa smart home routines?

Currently, there is no plan to support routines for operations that affect the security of your home (unlock, disarm, open.) However, locking the door can be included in routines.

7. In which countries will the Amazon Alexa voice unlock feature be enabled?

This functionality is currently available in the United States only.

Last April, we explored some budget-friendly tips for getting your front porch in tip-top shape each Spring. Creating first impressions. Making your porch a living space. Where did it all begin? And what can we look forward to as front porches make a major comeback as both a functional and fashionable statement?

 

For some insight, we turned to Ted Roberts, the Style and Design Chief at Allegion. A passionate architectural historian, Ted talks about the evolution of the front porch in America, its up and down history and its recent renaissance. He also shares his vision for the future of front porches and their role in creating a sense of community.

Q&A with Ted Roberts

Q: What can you tell us about the historical significance of the front porch?

A. “Homes, throughout history, have always reflected our cultural and practical needs. In colonial times, there weren’t many porches. It wasn’t until after The Revolutionary War that they began to appear in the South, driven by the need to escape the heat. The porch served a function. It was a comfortable part of the house because of its cooling breezes and protection from the sun. But it was also a meeting place, a comfortable place to socialize. And the nation was growing.”

Q: That was the beginning, what happened next?

A. “Over time, the porch evolved, getting more expansive and becoming an even more functional meeting space. This continued into the 1920s. As our cities and towns grew, porches became a social phenomenon because homes were being constructed so close together.”

Q: And then the popularity started to decline?

A. “Yes. The 1920s into the 30s saw a drop-off, mostly due to new technologies. With the automobile, people simply weren’t at home as much. Also, the dirt and noise from the roads made porches less inviting. On into the 1950s, you had the advent of radio and TV which tended to keep people in the house. And then came air conditioning! Now you didn’t even have to go outside to catch a cool breeze.”

Q: When did the front porch start to make a comeback?

A. “While there was a slight comeback in front porches for a time between 1970 and about 2000, we saw many home designs dominated by garage doors. Technology had again forced a design shift that put the front porch on the back burner and two-car garages at the forefront.

Two things are leading today’s comeback. We’re becoming more social, number one. And number two: home delivery. We once had the milkman making deliveries, but that faded as communities grew and small local grocers became big chain supermarkets. Now it has come full circle with technology allowing for everything from meal services to package deliveries. The result: a functional need to have a protected place for such things. This simple need has contributed to the morphing of the front porch into a useful and social showplace for the home.

Q: Where is the porch going?

A. “Based on what we’re seeing, it’s not going anywhere. The porch has become a unique space and a showcase for one’s fashion sense and is important to the curb appeal of a home. While it’s not your living room, people are bringing the same design sense to the space. Plants, furniture, ceiling fans, outdoor televisions, the traditional porch swing, occasional tables, built-ins – these are all now part of the front porch landscape. And will continue to be.”

Q: How has this impacted the front door, itself?

A. “Your front door is not just for wreaths anymore. It’s a space where you can make a statement. A reflection on “who owns this house.” You can dress up your door with things like pictures frames and family crests. You can refinish an old door or transform it entirely with large-pane glass or fancy cut glass with black muntin separating the panes – a huge trend right now.

“Perhaps the easiest and most cost-efficient way to update your look is with new door hardware. Q: What does this mean for Schlage?

Q&A with Ted Roberts

Q. Where did Schlage begin and where is the company now?

A. “The company has been around for a long time and has quite the history. It all started with Walter Schlage, an immigrant lock maker, who brought some very original ideas with him to America which then became patents and the foundation of Schlage. Dynamic, interesting and creative, Walter was what you’d call a “tinkerer.” His very simple goal, when you boil it all down, was to solve problems.

“That’s really our goal today. Whether we’re talking engineering challenges, keeping up with the latest style trends or making our door hardware easy to install and use, everything we do is designed to afford our homeowners the best possible experience. It’s no surprise, with this kind of heritage, that people expect a lot from us. We want to exceed those expectations.”

Q. Where do you see things going?

A. “I don’t see our mission changing in the future, this perfect harmony of style and function. I see us continuing the melding of aesthetics, innovative product features, reliability and performance that continues to delight our customers. We have some big shoes to fill. We take that responsibility – to our heritage and to our customers – very seriously.”

Q. What are some of the specific innovations Walter – and Schlage – are known for?

A. “With over 800 North American patents alone, there are a lot of them. Walter was really the grandfather of the smart lock. His first patent was for a lock that turned on your house lights when you entered. It’s so ironic how that very first innovation was the precursor to the entire generation of smart locks we’re introducing as we speak.

“Another that’s relevant today is Walter’s process of attaching glass to metal to create a glass door knob. They’re popular again today and are prominently featured in some of our newest collections. Taking something old and making it new again while remaining faithful to its origins – that’s a great example of true timelessness. And that goes for the products we make as well as our company as a whole.”

“Walter also improved the cylindrical lock by adding his push-button innovation. which is still in use today. Again, we started with Walter’s desire to make life easier for people and that continues today with the products we make.”

Q. What has changed the most with the company over the years?

A. “In a word, scope. The more we’ve looked at keeping the promises we’ve made to our homeowners over the years, the more new designs, styles, products and technologies have been explored.

“We’ve grown so much as a company and as innovators. Mechanical and electronic locks. Exit devices. Card readers. Biometric interfaces. Door hardware. I don’t even think Walter Schlage could have envisioned what his homegrown company would one day become.”

Q. What do you think Walter Schlage would say if he saw you now?

A. “On one hand, I imagine he would be in awe of the size of the company, today’s technology and, like I said, the sheer scope of the products the brands create. I also think he would still want to tinker with everything – see what’s going on inside and what makes today’s products tick.

“But he’d find a lot of familiar ground too, just in the way we approach our jobs and our commitment to security, safety and product performance. He’d also recognize in us a certain familiar entrepreneurial spirit and our company-wide desire to always look for and achieve the next best thing.”

Q. In your role as Style and Design Chief, how does this sense of history impact you, personally, in your day-to-day duties?

A. “I think I can speak for all of us when I say we feel like torch-bearers in a sense. Technologies change. Needs change. Styles certainly change–and then change back. We have to be in tune with that, just as Walter was in assessing his own customers’ needs way back when.

“That’s really our goal today. Whether we’re talking engineering challenges, keeping up with the latest style trends or making our door hardware easy to install and use, everything we do is designed to afford our homeowners the best possible experience. It’s no surprise, with this kind of heritage, that people expect a lot from us. We want to exceed those expectations.”

“As a designer following in his footsteps, I’m constantly aware that design is more than appearance – it’s a harmony of function as well as style, with each enhancing the other. Walter’s example guides us, as a company, to continue to look at what we do, holistically focusing on our customer and his or her positive experience with our products.

 

“For me, personally, I want us to continue our mission of keeping people safe and secure where they live, work and visit. We’re designing products that people rely on, so we need to get it right. If Walter saw us today, I would want him to recognize and appreciate that and feel as much pride as we do in making it happen. And, maybe a little selfishly, I’d like him to be impressed with our passion for design.”

When you need a new door lever or door knob, you’ll find that there are a lot of options to choose from. Door hardware parts checklist

Once you've gathered your tools, you're ready to get started installing your Schlage Custom lock. The first step you want to take is to ensure you have all parts and pieces you will need. Here's a checklist to help you be sure:

Allen wrench: You will use this to tighten the knob or lever.

 Latch: A spring operated bolt with a beveled face to permit a latching action when the door closes.

 Round corner faceplate: This is the decorative faceplate attached to the latch.

 Backplate: The backplate is used to secure the round corner faceplate to the latch.

 Drive-in faceplate: This is an optional faceplate that may replace the round corner faceplate if your door calls for it.

 Strike: The strike plate is the metal plate that will be affixed to the door frame. The strike is used to increase security by holding the latch in place.

 Latch/strike screws: These will be used to secure the latch and strike with the door.

 Chassis screws: These will be used to secure the interior chassis to the exterior chassis.

  Interior chassis: This chassis will be installed on the interior side of the door and will be secured in to place with the chassis screws.

  Exterior chassis: The chassis with two posts and a privacy pin hole.

  Trim: A circular or decorative trim plate attached to the door under the knob or lever.

 Door knobs or levers

  Privacy pin: You will need this tool to change the function of your lock from locking to non-locking.

 Emergency unlock tool: This tool can be used if your lock is set to privacy and is ever accidentally locked. Be sure to keep this tool some place handy.

Installation instructions

1You'll begin by first installing the strike. Secure the strike to the door frame using the two short screws.

2If your door has a backset of 2 3/8", you will not need to make any further adjustments. If your backset measures 2 3/4", the latch is easily adjusted to make it longer by turning the bottom half and extending it out.

3Next, you'll need to determine if you'll be using the round corner faceplate or the drive-in faceplate.

If using the round corner faceplate, put the silver backplate on the latch so the tabs on the latch are aligned with the notches on the backplate. Install the decorative, round corner faceplate over the silver backplate.

If you need to use the drive-in faceplate, you'll need to add a hammer and block of wood to your tool set. Simply install the drive-in faceplate over the latch until you hear it snap.

4If you're using the round corner faceplate, be sure that the angled beveled side is facing the door frame and slide the latch into place and secure with the two remaining short screws.

 

For the drive-in faceplate, slide into place and gently tap in to place flush with the door edge using a block of wood to protect the latch.

5Now that the latch is installed, it's time to put the chassis in place. With the privacy pin hole at the bottom, put the exterior chassis into the hole of the door while aligning the chassis posts with the holes in the latch.

6Place the interior chassis on the other side of the door and secure with the long chassis screws, being careful not to overtighten them.

 

7Now you are ready to install the trim. Notice the small indents on the chassis that lign up with indents on the interior side of the trim.

Make sure the privacy pin hole on the trim also lines up with the privacy pin hole on the chassis.

Line the trim hooks up and slide and click in to place. Repeat on the other side of the door.

8If you want to be able to lock the door, you'll want to use the privacy function. Insert the privacy pin on the pin hole on the interior side. Make sure the wings are horizontal then push until you hear a click.

Rotate the privacy pin one quarter turn to the right, then push it to engage the lock.

9Now it's time to attach the knobs or levers. Levers should face away from the door frame. If your lever is pointing the wrong way, watch this video on changing the handing here. Push your knob or lever into place with the correct orientation then tighten with the allen wrench.

Testing the lock

Now that the installation is complete, it's important to test the lock to make sure everything is in proper, working order.

1If you chose to use the privacy pin, push the pin to lock the door.

2To disengage the lock, simply turn the lever on the interior side to unlock.

It’s true, those of us at Schlage are total door hardware nerds – we love switching up styles and playing with finishes, so of course we think new hardware is a great idea! But you might be surprised by how easy it actually is to install new levers or knobs. All of our hardware is guaranteed to fit on standard door preps, so for most, it’s a 5-minute job that requires nothing more than a screwdriver.

Schlage door lock installation

1 As mentioned above, Schlage door hardware is guaranteed to fit on standard door preps. If you’re unsure whether your door is prepped correctly, double check these measurements:

If your measurements are different, you can call customer service at 888-805-9837. You may be able to get a different install kit for your non-standard door.

2 Most doors won’t require any adjustments to the latch, however, you are given some extra options, just in case. If your door doesn’t have a rectangular cut-out around the latch hole, you’ll want to use the round drive-in faceplate. You can use a flathead screwdriver to pop the rectangular faceplate off, then attach the round drive-in faceplate by sliding it over the top of the bolt and snapping it into place.

3Installing the latch is easy; for the standard rectangular faceplate, simply slide the latch into the hole until the faceplate is flush with the door, and secure it to the door with the two included screws. Make sure the beveled side of the bolt is facing the door jamb. The round drive-in faceplate is even easier: slide the latch into the hole, then cover the bolt with a block of wood to protect it from damage and use a hammer to gently tap it into place.

4Now you’re ready to add your knob or lever. The posts attached to the levers will slide through the latch, then you can secure them in place with the two screws. The final step is to attach the strike plate to the door jamb with the screws provided.

5Once you’ve gotten your new hardware on the door, you may find that your lever looks funny because it’s upside down. Don’t worry, this is easy to fix! Use the small pin included in the box to remove each lever. Switch each lever to the other side of the door so that the curved tip points downward, and snap it back into place.

But in recent years, color and darker shades have worked their way into Scandinavian homes and photo shoots. Nordic walls must have been craving a hit of color since living rooms and bedrooms have hungrily embraced shades of gray, blue, green and pink.

Why have Scandinavians suddenly welcomed color, and how is it being used? With the help of trend studies, forecasts and a look in the rear-view mirror, we follow the journey of color into Nordic homes.

Light and Color in Nordic Homes

Why do we think of Nordic homes as light? Scandinavian homes traditionally have been designed to maximize sunlight. Stockholm is the Nordic region’s sunniest capital, with about 1,800 hours of sunshine a year, and that figure is at least 1,000 hours short of the amount enjoyed in Madrid, Sydney and Miami.

“The foundation of Scandinavian design, and our Nordic homes, will always be brightness and simplicity, because it’s simply what we need due to the lack of sunlight,” says Karl Johan Bertilsson, creative director at NCS Colour Academy, which offers color consultancy services to manufacturers, architects and designers around the world.

“What we’re seeing now, however, is a change,” Bertilsson says. “During the last two or three years, bold colors have returned.” Though a common perception is that Scandinavian homes have been whitewashed and pared back for decades, if not centuries, there have been cycles of colors in the Nordic countries. The 1970s had a touch of psychedelia with bright colors and vivid patterns, followed by pastels in the 1980s and mottled earth tones in the 1990s — all of which preceded the pure. But now the spectrum is changing again. At Nordic trend exhibitions and fairs, interior design has moved away from the pale blues and violets of the past toward clearer, stronger colors — most recently, orange, pink, yellow and red.

“Trends often represent a reaction to what used to be,” Bertilsson says. “The fashion industry is always the quickest to react, but the interior decoration and design industry isn’t far behind. Since the turn of the millennium and until now, neutral colors, such as white and gray, have been the dominant shades in most Scandinavian homes. The [brighter] color that’s now becoming increasingly popular is simply a response to that.

“However, it’s important to remember that trends are both speculative phenomena and processes that sometimes overlap, and they’re only able to gain ground when we’re mentally ready to accept them,” Bertilsson says. paleness of the new millennium.

One individual who has dared to use strong color, and whose home, pictured below, has received a lot of attention, is Daniel Heckscher, interior architect and designer at Note Design Studio in Stockholm. He painted his home in a palette of turquoise, orange, pink, blue-green and bright yellow. Pictures of Heckscher’s colorful home have been published in the new bookazine My Residence, where he writes that people dress in black and use white for interior design because they don’t dare do anything else.

“They’re afraid of making decisions and mistakes,” he writes. “We Westerners are governed too much by our fears. Life isn’t colorless! Even in early spring, when Sweden is as pale as ever, there are approximately 7,000 nuances if you look out of the window. I don’t understand why designers and creators would want to represent a fictional environment?”

How Color Trends Break Through

When discussing color trends, Bertilsson points to studies that NCS uses to develop its analyses. “There’s research that shows color trends are cyclical,” he says. “Austrian [design consultant and psychologist] Leonhard Oberascher has studied color psychology and been able to prove that color trends repeat in cycles of 10 to 15 years. When everything is white and neutral, you grow tired after a while and eventually want to go to the other extreme of the spectrum. Humans work in the same way with everything, and colors are no exception. 

 

“What [Oberscher has] been able to pinpoint specifically are the stages we go through along the way,” Bertilsson says. “Everything was very neutral in our homes a few years ago, then the blue and violet colors took off. This was followed by the chromatic colors. These will subsequently be dampened and darkened before the brown and beige nuances step in, followed by a return to the neutral colors. The reality exactly follows the patterns that Oberascher has been able to map out.” This is true internationally, but with the Nordic homes as early adopters.

There are other factors at play too. Theoretical trend pyramids show that we’re receptive to trends at different points in time, depending on what our current job is, where we live and how we live.

“We’re all affected by trends, whether we like it or not,” Bertilsson says. “Swedes and Danes enjoy a privilege, given our geographical, social and cultural environment, in the sense that we don’t only have the will, but also the means, to carry out extensive home redesigns. Therefore, as the chromatic color trends are on the way, we’ve not been late to embrace them.

“In a lot of other countries, people decide to repaint their walls when the color has started to peel off. In Sweden and Denmark, paint shops look like interior design stores, because when we buy paint, we try to achieve a wholeness. We want to fulfill an idea where the color plays a big part,” he says.

The Nordic consciousness in terms of color and design has lately been augmented by influential interior design bloggers, who have shared their advice on color codes. Arguably the most famous bedroom color in Sweden in recent years has been nicknamed Tant Johanna’s Green, pictured, after stylist and blogger Johanna Bradford, who painted her bedroom in the pale gray­-green color.

“The fact that so many questions popped up about the color was in part due to the timing, as white walls had been dominating for years, and also because people were eager to try something else,” Bradford says. “But it’s also because it’s so difficult to find the right color, and that particular one is so unbelievably nice. If you see a color you like, you might as well ask for the color code.”

So, despite the fact that Scandinavians have begun painting with colors, they appear to do it within specific boundaries — the hues are subdued, rather than brash and bold, for example. “We dare to use more than just white, but I still think the end result is quite similar everywhere, since most people choose the same colors — as in the example of my bedroom wall,” Bradford says.

But don’t be fooled by the most recent white-dominant decades into believing that colorful walls in Nordic homes are a new phenomenon. Karin Fridell Anter, architect at the Swedish Association of Architects, has, together with Henrik Wannfors, written the book Painting Methods: Swedish Building Painting Methods From the Late Middle Ages to the Present Dayand has a longer view of color trends.

 

“Colored walls have come and gone in Swedish homes repeatedly throughout history,” Fridell Anter says. “What has mainly determined the choice of color is the availability of different shades and current style trends. The trend pendulum keeps swinging as a counter­-reaction to the past, but the difference is that the pendulum is swinging ever faster. 

 

“In the 1970s, we painted and wallpapered with strong colors and large patterns that resembled those of the Baroque period. The 1980s represented a counter-reaction that featured brighter pastels, and the 1990s again saw the return of mottled walls in earth tones, such as terra cotta, or navy blue and/or bright yellow,” she says.

 

“Further back in time, things didn’t happen as fast, and the difference between rich homes in the big cities and farming households in the countryside was bigger,” Fridell Anter says. “What the peasant community wished for was in many ways an imitation of what had already existed for many years in the trendsetting upper-class homes.”

Color as a Form of Expression

Did Swedes paint their homes more for practical rather than aesthetic reasons in the past? Fridell Anter says that’s not the case. “The purpose of interior painting in Sweden has always been to make the home look beautiful and to manifest something — to show via themes on the walls, the selection of colors or the decorations that you were a pious person, rich or aware of trends that were dominant in other cultures on the continent,” she says.

“In the same way that contemporary Swedes express themselves via interior decoration, the home was a status symbol in previous centuries too,” she adds.

So colored walls are not a new phenomenon in Scandinavia, but the style of painting perhaps has changed over the decades.

“Up until the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930, when the concept of functionalism was presented, decorative painting had been popular,” Fridell Anter says. “Painted surfaces hadn’t been a single­ color, but instead featured pictures or patterns, or imitated marble or wood. Functionalism represented a change in trends in the sense that people started painting entire walls in one single color, perhaps with a different one on the next wall. What we’re seeing now, with monochrome rooms and painted ceilings and woodwork, is an extension of that.”
 

Psychological factors, color as a personal form of expression and current trends appear to represent part of the explanation for Scandinavians’ sudden love of color. However, another strong factor in color choice is the response to contemporary life. NCS’ trend analysis for 2016 takes into account political events, the effects of digitization and global phenomena.

“We believe controversies will be the dominating factor in coming years,” says Bertilsson of NCS. “The unrest in the world, increased urbanization and stress lead, on the one hand, to a crudeness that’s influenced by the industrial style, with cold, hard colors. At the same time, the very same factors lead to increased escapism, where we dream of exotic places that inspire us, such as the unknown depths of the oceans and the colorful tropics. Trends will be triggered by upcoming world events, such as the Olympic Games in Brazil.” 

The big difference between the company’s 2015 analysis and this year’s is that the colors are more extreme than before — moving from bright and soft nuances to more dramatic and darker colors.

Bringing Nature Indoors

One word that often comes up when talking about Scandinavian style is nature. Has it been responsible for the color trend? “There’s definitely a connection,” Bertilsson says. “Last year, our main interpretation of escapism was that it revolved around dreams about the countryside. When urbanization makes us live closer to each other, in smaller houses or flats and with more noise, we create other mental worlds — we dream about lush trees and open fields.”

 

Swedish wallpaper company Sandberg recently released a collection that follows this theme. In its trend report, Sandberg has suggested that an unsafe environment leads to greater interest in one’s home. “Interior decoration has become more important and complex. With a serious environmental consciousness, we try to find ways to consume as little and as consciously as possible, while, at the same time, wishing to stay updated with news and trends.”

Stockholm-based color company Alcro suggests that Scandinavians incorporate nature themes into their homes with some of its 2016 colors, which it says “bring to mind forest creatures, misty meadows and bewitching dreams that take place in the hours of dawn.”

 

With that in mind, the blue-green themes that have become popular on the walls of homes in Sweden and Denmark aren’t entirely surprising. According to Oberascher’s color trend timetable,Scandinaviansshould be right in the middle of the trend cycle and should look forward to warmer walls before they’re muted and eventually become white again.

With hindsight, Scandinavians seem to be quick to follow interior decoration trends — and the question isn’t whether they will all follow the trend toward using more color in their homes, but, rather, whether they have time to do so. Unlike centuries ago, when it took several decades for color trends to reach Swedish farms, the wheel is spinning faster, and changes are taking place in a digitized, globalized world.

So perhaps there’s no reason to debunk the myth of the white Scandinavian home after all. The newly painted colorful wall might not even have time to dry before the trendsetters have painted it white again.

You’d think the smaller a room gets, the easier it would be to decorate. Not so – small spaces like half baths and storage closets often get the short end of the design stick while larger spaces like the living area and kitchen are paid special attention. As we always say at Schlage, the details make the design, so missing out on styling these smaller rooms is a major misstep in our book. Follow these five tips below, and the next time a guest enters your downstairs half-bath, they’ll emerge full of compliments about the stylish surprises they found.
 

1. Get decadent

Don’t be afraid to go for rich textures or wild prints. The small space will prevent them from overwhelming the design. Because you won’t need large reams of wallpaper or gigantic furniture to fill the space, you can also afford to spend a little more on the few items you’ll need. Think marble, damask, crystal and gold – the sky’s the limit!

2. Be smart about storage

If you make sure there’s plenty of storage space included in the design from the very beginning, you’ll avoid having to make changes later to keep the space livable. Choose sink cabinets with plenty of storage. Some cabinets have a lot of vertical space, but it’s wasted because there are no shelves to allow you to take advantage of it. Choose a cabinet that includes shelving or add your own afterward. If going for standalone shelving, scour the internet for pieces that add to the aesthetic but ensure you always have a place for towels and the like. Pieces that merge form and function are key.

3. Indulge your dark side

Unless you’re going for a very striking or unique design, dark wall colors are usually advised against – especially if you aren’t a professional designer. But did you know this is a rule best broken when it comes to very small rooms? Not only can you get away with painting a small bathroom or closet in the darkest color you can find, it’s actually a great way to add some variety to the styling of your home. And it looks amazing when paired with brighter accessories and furniture that pop against the dark background.

4. Fake it

Glass and mirrored surfaces are extremely popular in design right now, but they also have an excellent practical use: they create the illusion of more space. A glass enclosure around the shower, for example, is an excellent way to make your bathroom appear larger because you avoid breaking the space up into sections. Plus, it allows you to show off shower design features like custom tile designs, which are a great way to add a touch of your own unique personality.

5. Think small

Opt for smaller fixtures, especially lighting. An oversized crystal chandelier may look fabulous in the master bath but come across as overwhelming in a smaller guest bathroom. Corners are almost always some of the most wasted spaces in a home. An old door converted into a shelf makes perfect use of this awkward space. Linda at Craftaholics Anonymous painted her corner door shelf bright turquoise to add a pop of color to the room.
 

PHOTO DOOR

If you’re lucky enough to find a door full of windows, it’s a great opportunity to showcase some of your favorite photographs. Julie, of Redhead Can Decorate, had the perfect door for this project and used it to display photos of her children. She also used rope lighting to backlight the door and really make it stand out from its surroundings.
 

SLIDING STORAGE DOOR

We love this project from Design Sponge that repurposes an old stall door into a sliding storage space. Sliding doors are a great option when you want to save space but still have privacy. You could do the same project with most doors, but the open top half of the stall door allows you to showcase what you want and hide what you don’t want seen.
 

COUCH

If you want to do something different with an old door, check out this project also from Design Sponge. Instead of using the door as decoration, they turned it into a couch frame. Using the cushions from an old, broken-down couch and a reclaimed hardwood door, they created a one-of-a-kind couch with a handcrafted look.
 

CHAIR

Love the idea of the couch but don’t have the indoor space? This project from Dumped and Discovered might be right up your alley. With a reclaimed door and some extra wood for the seat, they created an outdoor bench that’s perfect for any garden.
 

ENTRY BENCH

Have some extra space in your front entryway but don’t know what to do with it? Check out this entry bench – also known as a hall tree – that Hillary at The Friendly Home created. This project used two doors, but since it serves as both a coat rack and storage bench, we think it was probably worth it.

There’s nothing quite like a home with history. From the lovably creaky stairs to the smell of hardwood, there’s a lot to love, and a lot to improve! Whether you’re adding a modern twist to your vintage home or faithfully recreating its original style, these five easy upgrades will allow you to make your mark without breaking the bank – or your back.

1. Stay true to the home's history

Glass knobs are a vintage staple, especially for Victorian-style homes. 4. Paint your old linoleum or vinyl sheet flooring

It may sound crazy, but modern paint is so long-lasting and flexible in terms of surface finish that this can be a great way to revamp your outdated flooring without breaking the budget or hiring help. With a little sandpaper, a lot of paint and some elbow grease, you can have a brand-new looking floor styled exactly to your specifications. There are plenty of tutorials online – we like this one.

5. Create a container garden

If you have a smaller yard, don’t have time to landscape, or just want a slightly different look than the neighbors, a container garden is an easy way to dress up your home’s curb appeal. Try mixing and matching pot sizes and styles for an eclectic look, or choose pots in different shades of the same color for a monochromatic pop. Rainbows are a big trend right now – pair red, orange, yellow, blue and purple solid-colored pots with matching flowers to create your own garden rainbow!
