Amazon Alexa - Prime Day - Schlage

Whatever you’re looking to control, Alexa can take home automation voice technology to the next level.

“Alexa, Earl Grey, hot.” While this might not be the most important request you make of your Alexa device today, her answer of “Unable to comply; replicators are off line…” is sure to be a disappointment.

From charming pop-culture Easter eggs to advanced home automation functionality, Alexa-enabled devices have become a staple in smart homes around the world. Featuring an ever-evolving list of skills, people have fallen in love with the convenience of Alexa. So, if you’re planning on picking up an Alexa device on Prime Day this year, Schlage would like to remind you of all the great things you can expect.

Managing your thermostat. Controlling your home’s lighting. Locking your front door. Whatever you’re looking to control, Alexa can take home automation voice technology to the next level. Better yet, Alexa is not alone. Many of today’s most respected and innovative brands –Schlage, GE, Phillips, Ring, Nest and others – are supporting smart -home technologies with products that were literally once the stuff of science fiction.

“Alexa, what can you show me?”

Alexa-enabled devices are designed to work with a range of brands innovating in the home automation space.

Alexa can control the volume of your Sonos wireless speakers. Phillips Hue lighting can be turned on and off or dimmed, just by asking. Your front door can be locked with your voice and you can monitor many of the safety systems in your home, including video doorbells and security cameras. This is just scratching the surface. If you’ve been considering adding home automation technology into your life, now is the perfect time to get started.

Amazon Alexa - Smart locks - Schlage

    “Alexa, lock the front door.”

It’s no surprise that Schlage is among the leading companies innovating for the smart home of today (and tomorrow). In 1909, Schlage’s founder, Walter Schlage, received his first patent for an electronic door lock that could also turn the lights on and off. Now, more than 100 years later, the company he founded is expanding its innovation footprint by introducing a whole family of smart locks that can be accessed from your smartphone or from your Amazon Alexa-enabled devices.

With the Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt, Amazon Echo users can lock their doors with their voice, and with the Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt, and Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt, you can also unlock the door via voice and a unique PIN. Convenience and peace of mind are just a voice command away and represent but a fraction of what voice-activated home automation promises to bring to you and your family.

“Alexa, play Holst Jupiter on Spotify”

There are a wide range of Amazon Alexa-enabled devices for you to consider, each sporting its own particular set of features tailored to your preferences and the specifics of your home automation system. From the Echo Plus smart speaker, to the compact Echo Dot, to the video-enabled Echo Show, there are plenty of options to match your needs. Pick your favorite and then sit back and enjoy, as a whole world of possibilities in home automation open up for you.

    “Alexa, what’s the date?”

With all home automation devices, a little research and preparation can go a long way in making sure all of the products you pair with your system are compatible and will work properly. You’ll be well on your way to making yours one of the more than 5 million smart homes in America today.

By 2025, it is estimated that there will be more than 41 billion connected devices in our homes, cars and more. Since you can get started exploring the Internet of Things for as little as $500, when you consider the convenience, safety, security – and fun – connected technologies can bring you, it’s certainly worth looking into.

And there's no better time to start than right now.

Moving - New Home Checklist - Schlage
You’ve worked for this moment and have earned all the opportunity and rewards coming your way in your new home. The possibilities are virtually limitless now that you’re starting to settle in. In this, the second of our two-part post on preparing your current home for sale and moving into your new one, we have outlined five steps to make the most of your move with a number of easy, DIY solutions.
Moving - New door hardware - Schlage

    Step 1: Secure

There are a number of things you should do first thing to make your new home as secure as possible.

    • Make sure your insurance coverages and information are up to date. If you need new home, property or flood insurance, now’s the time to find out.

    • Create a new, easily accessible emergency contact list, especially if you’ve moved some distance from your old home.

    • Replace the batteries (if applicable) in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and make sure all of these systems are in good working order.

    • Replace fire extinguishers, making sure you have enough strategically placed so you can access them easily from all corners of the house.

    • Activate the home security system if there is one installed or install a new one (a home without a security system is more than three times more likely to be broken into.)

    • Change all the locks in your home, as there’s no telling how many sets of old keys are floating around out there. Options range from re-keying current locks to replacing your exterior locks with the latest keyless smart locks. Some of these can even be controlled from anywhere on your smartphone.

    Step 2: Assess

Did everything arrive – and arrive intact? Is your new home clean and ready for you to move in? Is everything working as it should be?

    • Check all appliances, boxes and furniture for moving damage and don’t hesitate to file a claim with your mover if anything is amiss.

    • Clean before you unpack. This is the perfect time to deep clean, including getting vents and ductwork professionally cleaned.

    • Plan where you want all your furnishings to go before you start moving things around.

    • Organize drawers, closets and storage now, before you actually start packing them full.

    • Check all home systems – from HVAC to electric service to utilities – to make sure everything has been hooked up, set up and is operating to your liking.

    Step 3: Settle In

It’s time to unpack, unwind and start enjoying the fruits of your labor. The end is in sight. According to our friends at The Spruce, organization is the key.

    • Determine your color scheme and decorating needs before you settle in and do as much of your painting and staining as possible before moving day.

    • Develop a plan for unpacking and decide where you want things to go before you open that first box.

    • Apply that same thinking to setting your furnishings, creating vignettes on your shelves and decorating.

    • Unpack one room at a time, starting with the kitchen before moving on to bedrooms, bathrooms and larger, multi-use rooms (in that order).

    • Make sure you’re getting your mail. This isn’t something you want to discover was overlooked a week into your new home.

    Step 4: Connect

Do friends and family know where to find you (well, the ones you want to find you, anyway)? Do you know who to call should you need anything? Make a list!

    • Don’t hesitate to ask your realtor for their list of contacts. He or she is a great resource for everything from plumbers and painters to local take-out.

    • Update your own contact lists, from family and friends to those all-important emergency numbers to local services.

    • Get the lay of the land. Where is the nearest good pizza? How about the nearest pharmacy? Your nearest Lowe’s or The Home Depot? Scope it out.

    • Reach out to your immediate neighbors and introduce yourself if they haven’t already taken the initiative.

    Step 5: Celebrate

It’s time to celebrate by giving yourself a well-deserved house warming party. Here’s how, from Better Homes and Gardens.

    Welcome home

For people selling their home, very often the best investment is to just switch out their entryway door hardware incorporating convenience, security and curb appeal. For new home owners, however, an investment in all new door hardware, indoors and out, will continue to pay returns right up to and including when you’re in the market for your next new home.

From all of us at Schlage, congratulations. We’re here to help you make your new home as secure as can be with our innovative, high performance and stylish mechanical and electronic door hardware.

The Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt, Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt are perfect for home automation and making your home smarter. These are but a few of the products Schlage offers to open possibilities for you and your new home. Share with friends and family who are looking to make a move and help open possibilities for them, too.

Easy and affordable DIY tips for staging your home to sell

DIY Tips - Home Staging - Schlage

Adding even a few smart home products is the single easiest way to boost your home’s value. Here's what you need to know before you buy or sell a home with smart home tech.

    Home Staging ROI - Schlage

Every dollar you invest in properly preparing and staging your home for sale adds about $2 to the selling price on average. There are a few simple and affordable DIY projects you can do to add even more value, giving you a better chance to get your asking price – or more. The best part? Most of these will cost you little more than some spare time.

With some prior planning and a little DIY know-how and ingenuity, your home sale can be a pleasant and rewarding experience.

Five steps to selling for more

Here are five simple rules when staging your home to sell. Other handy links throughout, like this one to Realtor Mag, will take you to even more in-depth explorations.

    1. Depersonalize:

Potential buyers want to see themselves in your home. Removing photographs and other personal items that reflect specifically on you, your family and your interests allow for buyers to fill in the blanks with imaginings from their own lives. Removing such items, packing them up and investing in a small self-storage unit will pay huge dividends for a relatively small investment.

At the same time, set the dining room table as if you were expecting friends over for dinner, set up your front porch for entertaining and clean off the back patio or deck and stage it for a barbeque or garden party. You want your guests to see themselves living there. And loving it.

DIY Tips - Home Staging - Schlage

    2. Maximize:

You’ll want to make your home feel as expansive and livable as possible. Start by decluttering – a self-storage unit can help with this, too. From cleaning out closets, cabinets and drawers (buyers will snoop), to removing throw rugs from your bathroom, living room and kitchen, there are lots of little things you can do to make your space seem larger than life.

Open up the curtains and let the sun shine in. Replace old, worn window treatments with inexpensive yet stylish new shades, curtains or shutters. Get things up and off the floor and out to storage. Remove excess furniture. Add mirrors for style and openness. Make every room big, bright, open and inviting.

    3. Sanitize:

Your home can’t be clean enough. A spotlessly clean home tells a bigger story about just how much you cared for and maintained your home. Perception is reality. Scour the bathrooms and the kitchen, using water and bleach to remove mold and mildew. Really work to clean every nook and cranny. Scrub and polish floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets and any rugs you decide to leave about. Wash your windows. Clean and polish appliances (inside and out). Dust and wax furniture and bookcases. We’re talking a deep clean here.

You might consider a bonded and insured professional cleaning service that is experienced in cleaning for home sellers. This is where your realtor can come in, so don’t hesitate to use him or her as a resource for finding anything you might need. Here are some additional suggestions from Angie’s list.

    4. Neutralize:

In the continuing effort to let the buyer envision themselves living in your home, think neutral when styling and staging. Repaint key rooms in neutral colors. Decorate with monochromatic hues (for instance, using fresh, white towels in the bathroom instead of bright colors and replacing window treatments with clean, white curtains and shades). Declutter bookcases and replace half of your books with strategically placed pieces of art, vases or other simple, unobtrusive touches. These all serve to invite potential buyers to imagine your home as theirs.

Keeping things simple and clean – and reducing clutter – are among the easiest and least expensive ways to prepare your home for sale.

Home Staging - Smart locks - Schlage

    5. Modernize:

Projects you invest in to modernize your home will more than pay for themselves when you sell it. Don’t be afraid to replace old kitchen appliances. Re-paint or stain old kitchen cabinets. Replace outdated cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures. Replace that old vanity in the bathroom with a new pedestal sink. These kinds of simple upgrades – many of them weekend DIY projects or a short jaunt to Lowe’s away – will work wonders.

Another simple update that pays big dividends is replacing your old front door lock with a keyless electronic lock. Instead of having a realtor’s lockbox or spare housekeys floating around out there, you can program up to 30 individual security codes depending up on the lock type you select. Codes can be activated, de-activated and replaced as often as you see fit. And with some of today’s locks, you can program them from anywhere, using your smartphone.

A new lock with a stylish new handleset is the perfect finishing touch to that front-porch refurbishing project. It adds curb appeal, convenience and next-level security – and affordably. It also makes a great first impression when prospective buyers come calling.

    Schlage electronic locks

Schlage offers a wide selection of keyless options from which to choose. The Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt, Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt allow easier home access using your smartphone all while improving security. These are all reflective of a heritage of innovation and style that dates back to our company’s founding when Walter Schlage first patented a door lock that also turned on a home’s lights.

Schlage electronic locks are the ideal DIY project. They are easy to install, requiring only a screwdriver and a little free time. They’re available in a wide selection of styles and finishes. And they add peace of mind that’s very welcome among the stresses and anxiety that come with selling a home and planning a move.

Is your home ready to sell? Think depersonalize, maximize, sanitize, neutralize and modernize and you’ll be well on your way.

Smart locks - Holiday Convenience - Schlage

We’ve designed our smart locks to make your life not only safer but also simpler, even during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

There’s no debate over the purpose of a good door lock – it keeps your home, you, your family, and your belongs secure. We believe convenience should be an equally standard feature. That’s why we’ve designed our smart locks to make your life not only safer but also simpler, even during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

Smart locks - Holiday Convenience - Schlage

    1. Access Codes

The Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt both hold 30 unique access codes, and the Schlage Touch™ Keyless Touchscreen Deadbolt holds up to 19. Give holiday guests their own code during their visit, then deactivate the code when they leave. They’ll appreciate the freedom to come and go with ease, and you’ll love the continued security.

You can also assign codes to cleaners, handymen or other service providers helping to prepare the house for the holidays. Don’t forget the pet sitter keeping an eye on Fluffy when you’re traveling. You can schedule your codes to be recurring, temporary, or one-time-only, depending on your needs.

With these convenient access codes, why carry keys with you or hide one under a fake rock, which isn’t secure anyway? No keys means you won’t lose them when making snow angels with the kids, taking a walk with the dog or going for a run to combat those holiday calories.

    2. Remote Access

Lock or unlock your door from anywhere. If guests arrive at inconvenient times, like when you’re still at work, you won’t have to leave them standing out in the cold. Simply use your smartphone to unlock your door and let them in.

You can also check the status of your lock from anywhere, perfect for those cold nights when you want to make sure the door is secure but don’t want to leave the warm comfort of bed. Why not use an app to give access to a neighbor dropping off your mail while you’re on vacation, too?

    3. Create a routine

When you match your lock with a smart home automation system, you can often create routines that control multiple devices with a single push of a button. For example, make a “Welcome Home” routine so that when you unlock your door, the entryway lights come on, the thermostat adjusts and holiday music begins to play.

Different locks are compatible with different technology. Try our Get Help Deciding Tool or find more tips online to find what’s right for you.

    4. Easy deliveries

Fight porch pirates by protecting deliveries during holidays. In addition to the remote access that comes with all our smart locks, Amazon Key and Prime users in select areas have the additional option of using in-home delivery. This allows delivery people to place packages inside your front door without providing them with an access code. You can also restrict access during certain times of the day if needed.

    5. Style with function

Schlage door hardware comes in a variety of finishes and styles to help any porch make a great first impression. Function is equally important, though. Touchscreens can be used even when they get wet from rain or snow, or when you have gloves on. Numbers on the touchscreens are also backlit, making it easy for you and your guests to see them as the winter nights get longer.

Hollywood Regency - Dempsey Lever - Schlage Custom Door Hardware

The Hollywood Regency trend was born to reflect the shimmer, opulence, flamboyance and glamour of the 1930's Hollywood scene, bringing it from the silver screen into America’s homes.

Hollywood Regency - Amy Matthews - Schlage Custom

In the 1930’s, movie sets had to be designed and styled to be able to accommodate – contain – Golden-Age-of-Hollywood Stars like Katharine Hepburn, Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Humphrey Bogart and a veritable constellation of other such luminaries. The personalities were larger than life. The Hollywood scene was larger than life. And the Hollywood Regency trend was born to reflect the shimmer, opulence, flamboyance and glamour of that very special time, bringing it from the silver screen into America’s homes.

Cut to designer-to-the-stars and TV host extraordinaire, Amy Matthews, and her co-stars, Schlage Custom™ Door Hardware and the Dempsey lever. This is the final installment of her four-part series in which she works with Schlage designers to transform rooms around a single piece of Schlage door hardware. For this, she and the Schlage team chose the Dempsey lever for its character, boldness and sumptuous curves. It served as the perfect centerpiece for her big Hollywood ending, a larger-than-life Hollywood Regency blockbuster that showcases the breadth of Schlage’s passion for style.

The Dempsey lever was inspired by the glamour and grace of Old Hollywood. It’s a shining example of the way Schlage door hardware can serve as a focal point for bringing a specific style statement to life. Amy loves the glamour of the lever and the challenge of integrating it into such a space. In fact, of all the rooms she helped design for this special partnership, this turned out to be her favorite.

Hollywood Regency - Dempsey Lever - Schlage Custom

    The inspiration

Schlage’s Dempsey lever brings a singular, unmistakable style to settings looking to make a real statement. One look and Amy knew where the design needed to go. She paired the lever with Schlage's Rosewood Trim in a lustrous yet tasteful satin nickel. The combination of the lever's distinctive curves and the scalloped look and finish provided the perfect centerpiece. The final room design featured a luxurious array of bold, contrasting colors, cut glass, lavish fabrics and reflective metals. It was truly a larger-than-life vision worthy of a star like Joan Crawford or Errol Flynn, with the Dempsey lever anchoring the entire concept.

Hollywood Regency - Mood board - Amy Matthews - Schlage Custom

    The mood board: Unmistakable style

Amy started with the Dempsey lever paired perfectly with Schlage’s Rosewood trim. In satin nickel, it complemented the overall design without getting in the way. She then assembled the mood board, splashing it with muted greens and reds that popped along with the glitter and luster of cut glass and exotic textures. For this design, she envisioned a sumptuous bedroom suite with a large bed in greens and natural tones dominating the room. Touches like a zebra rug, a crystal chandelier, a mirrored white vanity, period wallpaper and a distinctive green door completed Amy’s vision with panache and sizzle.

    The look: Inspired and opulent

Amy’s immersion in the world of “lights, camera, action” really explored the true potential of what’s possible when building an entire room around a single piece of Schlage Door Hardware. Motivated by the style, vision and innovation of designers such as Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel, Amy brought a distinctive sexiness to the look, adding sleekness to the design with a black tile floor.

The 1930’s marked the first time that movies began selling themselves based on the styles and fashions that would be worn by the stars that appeared in them. Think of it as early product placement. The lavish styles and fashions depicted were everywhere, selling everything from apparel to furnishings. Amy brought this sensibility to our Hollywood Regency masterpiece, with the Dempsey lever proving itself worthy of the glitz and glamour it inspires.

While Amy generally prefers more simple, clean and organic designs, she really enjoyed stepping out with Schlage’s designers and pushing the envelope with the Dempsey lever and this glorious homage to Old Hollywood glam.

Simple - Holiday Updates - Schlage

If you hoped to fix up the house before holiday guests arrived this year and haven’t gotten around to it yet, you’re in luck. Focus on these six ares and you'll be ready to host in no time.

If you hoped to fix up the house before holiday guests arrived this year and haven’t gotten around to it yet, you’re in luck.

In a survey of what it takes to welcome holiday visitors and leave a great first impression, tackling last-minute home improvement projects was among the top 10 ways to make your home guest-ready. Those DIY projects were also on the list of top 10 things that impress guests most.

To help you out, here are six areas of your house, many of which the survey identified as rooms most in need of a pre-holiday remodel, where you can make quick and easy changes that still make a big impact.

    Front porch

Your entryway is the first thing your visitors will see, so use it to make a good impression immediately. Try updating your house numbers. Not only will they look good, but they’ll also help those guests who don’t typically visit find your home in the first place.

A new Schlage Custom handleset, with a variety of designs and finishes available, can also make your door stand out in the most stylish of ways. With the highest industry ratings for residential security, premium metal construction and easy installation with just a screwdriver, you can also be confident of getting the job done before your guests’ arrival. And as an added bonus, handleset finishes coordinate easily with other home accents like lighting and plumbing fixtures as well as Schlage Custom hardware for interior doors.

    Foyer

Once your guests are inside, you want them to feel welcome. Try some visually interesting coat hooks for some flair and function. If you have a small hallway or foyer, think about hanging a mirror to make the space feel bigger.

    Kitchen

Unless you have the budget and the time for a project like a new backsplash, try focusing on something like your cabinetry. New cabinet pulls are a relatively quick change that can create a new look without a massive overhaul. It’s also the perfect opportunity to mix hardware finishes in a way that makes a big statement with minimal effort. You might choose a cabinet hardware finish that contrasts with a metallic light fixture, or pair a matte finish with a bright and shiny countertop accessory.

Don’t forget inside the cabinets either. Organizers will get the shelves looking tip-top when guests offer to help set the table. These also have the added benefit of you being able to enjoy them long after the holidays. Because no one has ever said, “I wish my cabinets were less organized.”

    Living room

If you have a fireplace, use it to create a beautiful holiday focal point for the room. Replace or decorate the mantel with festive photos, gorgeous greenery and other ornaments that put your holiday spirit on display.

The living room is also a great opportunity for you to repurpose some of your own belongings. Move the furniture around, use pillows from another room on your couch or to create extra seating, or swap out end tables from another area in the house. This is one change that’s both easy in effort and on the wallet.

    Bathroom

You can flex your DIY muscle by redoing flooring and grout. Or you can make a few cosmetic updates that will get your shower looking and working great for your guests. Change out the shower rod for something a bit more stylish or replace the showerhead. Create a spa-like experience with a relaxing raincan fixture, one with multiple settings or a two-in-one option that also includes a hand shower.

    Bedroom

Aunt Barbara is just hours away. Repainting is out, but you can replace the door hardware. With Schlage Custom door hardware, you choose from a range of knobs and lever styles that instantly elevate any room. You pick the style and finish to match your home décor. And just like our handlesets, these install in minutes with just a screwdriver.

Another easy change is to replace the bedding in a guest room. Something warm and luxuriously soft will always be popular with even the pickiest of guests.

The holiday decorating season is in full swing, so make way for some holiday color and cheer. It won’t be long before the stockings are hung, a holiday wreath adorns your front door, the lights are shining bright and the colors of Christmas, Hanukah and Kwanzaa turn front porches coast to coast into holiday showpieces.

It’s another installment of Schlage’s ongoing series of blogs featuring premium design ideas, we provide ways to bring your home designs to life and how to incorporate the premium style of Schlage into those designs. Ted Roberts, the Style and Design Chief at Allegion, shares some thoughts on creating memorable and inviting winter front porch designs that will make your home stand out. From accent lighting to securing your home for the season, Ted outlines some simple, affordable ways to be the envy of the neighborhood throughout the holidays and beyond.

Ted Talks - Winter Front Porch - Lighting - Schlage

    Q&A with Ted Roberts

Q: It’s that time of the year. What can we do to make this year’s holiday decorating special?

A: “One of the joys of holidays and winter decorating is the passion that people put into it, trying to outdo themselves year after year. And it shows. This year, you’ll see the wreaths, bows, tinsel and traditional decorations that mark the season, but I also think you’ll see a lot more imaginative lighting displays.”

Q: A bright outlook then, for the season?

A: “It’s just that there are so many options in the winter front porch lighting department. It’s the perfect place to start. I really think projected lighting is going to be big this year. It can be truly dramatic, painting a lightscape across the entire front of your house. And, for the budget conscious, these can be particularly useful because you can customize the graphics or colors and light patterns season to season. Another favorite porch design idea of mine is white string lights. They are a great way to celebrate the season but can also stay up all winter long or even all year long. Another simple, affordable year-round solution is white architectural lighting. Talk about adding a distinctive accent to any outdoor space. Any of these can brighten your front porch project with many options available for less than $100.”

Q: Where do you go from there, when looking at your seasonal porch designs?

A: “The front door. It can be the perfect centerpiece of your winter front porch showcase. We like to say that your front door and your front patio or porch make the ultimate first impression. That’s as true when you’re greeting holiday visitors as it is when you’re talking year-round curb appeal. Your front door reflects your personality. Your uniqueness. Your own sense of style. From a simple, inexpensive wreath that can be redecorated from season to season to wrapping your front door in bright and shiny wrapping paper and bows, the sky really is the limit. My only caution is: make sure that any door decorations don’t interfere with the operation of your front door and door lock, because you don’t want to compromise your safety and security, no matter how awesome your holiday door looks.”

Q: And that’s where Schlage comes in?

A: “That’s where Schlage comes in. This time of year, particularly through the holidays, you’ve got visitors coming and going, more package deliveries than normal, partygoers, people dropping by, holiday carolers at your doorstep – and that’s only the beginning. You’ve also got about a 1 in 35 chance of being a victim of property crime during the holidays, so you’ll want to make sure everything is safe and secure. Schlage offers a range of front door locks – from mechanical locks and deadbolts to convenient keypad locks to connected smart locks – that are as reflective of your own unique sense of style as they are functional. Good locks are a deterrent. Security cameras are a deterrent. Security systems are a deterrent. Schlage makes smart locks too that work with many of today’s most popular home automation and security systems.

Ted Talks - Winter Front Porch - Security - Schlage

    Q: Any other security tips?

A: “Another good rule of thumb: when you change your clocks – when you fall back – it’s a great time to change out your batteries in smoke alarms, home safety monitors, electronic locks and the like. All Schlage electronic locks feature a handy low-battery alert, but checking regularly is still a good habit.

    Q: Final thoughts?

A: “Enjoy the season. There are so many affordable options for making your front porch shine year-round, but especially in the fall and winter. And don’t forget President’s Day, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day – all offer opportunities for you to adapt your porch designs to suit the seasons. Flags are another great addition, showing your patriotism, sense of pride, sense of humor and allegiance to your favorite team.

How Schlage smart locks stand up to Mother Nature.

Smart locks - Weatherproof - Schlage

Are smart locks waterproof? What happens when the power goes out? Here’s what you need to know.

Smart locks - Weatherproof - Schlage

Some of us love winter weather, and others are already counting down the days until spring. When the temperatures drop, and the snow and ice hit your door, you want your lock to be ready, even if you aren’t.

When it comes to holding up to the weather, Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt, as well as Schlage Touch™ Keyless Touchscreen Deadbolt and Schlage Keypad Deadbolt, are designed to exceed, and have been validated to function, beyond industry certification requirements.

We do not recommend our smart locks be used on outdoor gates or on doors in which the lock’s interior housing is completely exposed to the elements. However, we consistently work to bring you quality products so that you know you’re getting the convenient features and peace of mind, no matter what elements your house faces.

    Tried and tested

Your electronic lock’s exterior components, which are often exposed to the harshest elements, are tested against:

    • Extreme temperatures, including icing or freezing conditions (as low as approximately -22 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the lock) and high heat (up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit)
    • High humidity and condensing humidity
    • Rain
    • Coastal environment conditions

    Peace of mind

Additional features provide an extra layer of confidence for when the worst weather strikes.

    • Battery operated: All of Schlage’s keyless locks run on battery power, so if the power goes out, you’re still protected. You won’t be locked out and those who shouldn’t have access to your home won’t gain it just because ice pulled down a power line.
    • Back-lit numbers: Whether the power goes down or the sun has just set early, you’ll never be left fumbling in the dark to unlock your door.
    • Glove-friendly: No need to remove your mittens. Touchscreens and keypads work even if they’re wet from rain and when you’re wearing gloves.

    Protection beyond the weather

Of course, not all elements are a result of Mother Nature. We know security depends on your lock working in all kinds of conditions. That’s why we also test our smart locks in construction-based environments, such as pressure washing, fluid spills and dust.

Schlage smart locks are backed by a three-year electronics warranty and a limited lifetime mechanical and finish warranty. With our successful testing, you can be as confident as we are in your security and style year-round, rain or shine, snow or heat.

To find out if a Schlage smart lock will work well for your home and climate, reach out to us on Facebook or contact our customer support team for help.

5 ways getting smart can save you and your home energy.

Energy Efficiency - Smart Home - Schlage

There are several ways you can cash in on smart home technology for energy savings, something that’s on many of our minds as we head into the winter months of high heating bills.

With smart home automation, you can make your house more energy efficient, saving you money. Home automation can also save you energy, making daily life just a little easier.

There are several ways you can cash in on smart home technology for energy savings, something that’s on many of our minds as we head into the winter months of high heating bills.

Energy efficiency - Smart Home - Schlage

    Thermostat

Heating and cooling your house uses more energy than anything else in your home. A programmable or smart thermostat makes it easier to adjust the temperature as the weather changes or based on who’s home. Energy.gov estimates that turning down your thermostat by 7 to 10 degrees for eight hours a day, like when you’re at work, could save you up to 10 percent annually on heating and cooling costs.

Don’t want to come home to a cold house? When you choose a smart thermostat, you can start warming things back up with the push of a smartphone button before you even leave the office. Another option is to program your thermostat to do it automatically.

    Lighting

Consider taking your energy savings beyond just saying “Alexa, turn off the lamp” or putting your lights on a timer. Try light sensors that turn your lamps on only when someone is in the room. You can also add geo-fencing, which automatically turns lights on and off based on where your smartphone is.

    Kitchen appliances

Some smart ovens take less time to preheat, allow you to program the cooking process based on what you’re making and can often monitor your dish’s progress using sensors. All of these can translate to less wasted energy.

If you think a refrigerator doesn’t need to be smart, think again. On the most basic level, making sure the door closes properly helps to conserve energy. That means a fridge that notifies you if the door didn’t shut all the way also saves you money. The ability to see inside the refrigerator without opening the door, perfect when trying to decide what to snack on, saves you money. A refrigerator that automatically knows when to reduce its energy consumption during the power grid’s peak hours while still keeping your frozen foods frozen, yes, saves you money.

But what about conserving energy of a different kind? Some smart features or appliances might not reduce your financial expenses quite so obviously, but if they make your life easier, that seems like pretty good savings to us.

Smart Lock - Zigbee Amazon Lock - Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt

    Smart locks

Smart locks like the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt make daily life more convenient by allowing you to share access codes with family, friends, handymen, dogwalkers and others you may want to grant temporary access. No more keeping track of spare keys. No more rushing home from work to let someone in.

Amazon Prime members in select areas can pair the Schlage Connect lock, Zigbee certified with the Amazon Key app and Amazon Cloud Cam to have packages securely delivered just inside the front door. You control entry from your smartphone, so you don’t have to provide a code to the delivery driver. You can even choose to block access remotely on delivery day if desired.

Looking for even more convenience? Make your smart lock part of a home automation sequence. Try setting up a Welcome Home routine, for example. When you unlock your door, the lights turn on and your thermostat goes up. Or maybe a Goodnight routine that locks the doors and powers down electronics all at once while you relax in bed.

These smart locks also add convenience with peace of mind. You’ll never have to wonder if you locked the door when you can check its status remotely from your smartphone. You can also be confident in the quality of your locks. All our smart deadbolts earned the highest marks from BHMA, so you know your home is safe and that your lock will continue to function correctly throughout its lifespan and stand up to the elements over time without losing its great style.

    Robotic Vacuums

Make it a clean sweep of convenience with a robotic vacuum. Many can now be scheduled to run using smartphone apps and voice control. There’s even one that will take photos and videos when it senses movement in the room. Consumer Reports cautions that these vacuums don’t have the same suction power as a standard upright vacuum and their effectiveness depends on your type of flooring, but they can definitely help with everyday cleaning maintenance. And that’s an energy saver in our books.

Adding home automation could be your solution for saving both money and effort. Find more ways Schlage can bring simplicity to your life at Schlage.com or on Twitter and Facebook.

One of the most budget and design-friendly ways to bring antique fixtures into your home is with door knobs. And to that end, Schlage Custom Door Hardware and the Hobson glass knob are a game changer, according to Amy Matthews, Contractor, Designer and popular TV and YouTube host. From eclectic to transitional, it makes a statement by bringing a traditional look suitable for modern-day applications.

That’s why Amy chose the Hobson knob as her inspiration for creating an entire room look for Schlage designers based around the Hobson knob’s vintage versatility. In this, the third installment of her four-part series in which she works with the Schlage design team to transform rooms around a single piece of Schlage door hardware, Amy embraced Schlage’s unique take on a 100-year-old classic. Together, they explored its application in a more contemporary setting.

The Hobson knob is an ideal statement piece, putting its beveled glass design element inside a sleek, smooth glass exterior that Amy loves. It perfectly complemented the colors, textures and materials she chose for this particular room design.

Vintage glass knob - Hobson - Schlage Custom

    The inspiration

Schlage's Hobson knob can bring a touch of bling to a wide assortment of settings, according to Amy. From traditional to even the most modern of styles, it can be paired with a variety of finishes and trims that make the quintessential glass knob the picture of eclectic style. For additional inspiration, Amy looked for photos of various homes and decor from different yet specific eras and then adapted her designs to bring a measure of authenticity to the look she was creating. It's no surprise, then, that one of her favorite fixtures is the glass knob.

Eclectic, vintage style - Mood board - Amy Matthews - Schlage Custom

The mood board: A collection of Amy's favorite looks

Amy started with the Hobson knob, pairing it with a satin brass finish and modern trim. She wanted to take advantage of the versatility of the Hobson to serve as the foundation for a modern, bohemian vibe that also exuded sumptuousness and warmth.

She wanted the Hobson knob, as specified, to complement the natural wood she’d chosen for the door and some of the furnishings. She also chose the glass and satin brass look to work in contrast to some of the blacks and pops of red and gold accent colors she crafted into the board. Neutral grays and flooring completed the picture, with the overall look reflecting Amy’s preference for clean, modern presentations.

    Amy Matthews - Schlage Custom

    The look: Classic yet modern

Amy and the team brought the room to life with rugs, pillows, throws, artwork and other meticulous touches that picked up the gold in the satin brass finish. She wanted the look to radiate warmth and welcome. Again, the word Amy used for what she was going for was “sumptuous.” The flexibility of Schlage Custom and the warmth and glow of the Hobson knob was the perfect centerpiece for Amy’s very particular design expression.

While some of the furnishings were in natural woods to complement the door and the neutral flooring, she also added touches like black accent tables and other, more colorful accessories to provide a nice contrast throughout. Her overall objective: create a room that transforms an ordinary space into an extraordinary home. She certainly succeeded, building this look around the vintage style and design flexibility of Schlage Custom and the Hobson glass knob.

Quality Door Locks - Schlage Custom

When shopping for new home good items, it pays to understand when it’s worth saving and when it’s worth the splurge.

When shopping for new home good items, it pays to understand when it’s worth saving and when it’s worth the splurge. Take coffeemakers for example. If we use them every day, it might be worth paying a little extra for a model that not only is going to last but also will save you time and money in the long run. If your coffeemaker turns out to be sub-par, you’ll ultimately end up spending more on a replacement or by heading to the coffee shop. So much for savings.

What does this have to do with door hardware?

You won’t want to give up coffee cold turkey because your at-home maker isn’t up to snuff, nor will you stop wanting to lock your doors for the same reason. Do your research and think about the following factors when considering the move up to the next tier of locks and door hardware. They might make you re-think defaulting to the lowest price.

Quality door locks - Eller Lever - Schlage Custom

    Durability

You’re going to use your locks every day, and it’s important that they work every time. With Schlage, you can be assured that not only will your locks and door hardware last for years to come - reducing the need for frequent replacements - but they’ll also help protect your home throughout their lifespan.

Nearly all of Schlage’s mechanical hardware and electronic deadbolts, levers and knobs are rated best in security, durability and finish by BHMA. Testing shows that our hardware is resistant to the toughest environmental and weather conditions, and levers hold up under heavy weight, so you know you’re covered when a child hangs on them. Premium metal construction also provides a quality you can actually feel.

Our smart locks also feature the same type of encryption used in online purchases and built-in alarm technology to consistently protect what’s most important to you.

Similar products: Toilet plungers and car tires. You probably won’t find out that they aren’t working until it’s already a problem. And you definitely don’t want that.

Quality door locks - BHMA grading - Schlage

    Style

You’re going to look at your door hardware every day. Front-door locks and hardware are some of the first things guests will see, so you might want something visually appealing that also matches the style of your home. Schlage Custom™ Door Hardware features architecturally-inspired designs that reflect your unique taste. With our collection of styles and finishes, the possibilities offer a whole new dimension of personal style to your home.

Smart locks like Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt come in a variety of styles and finishes as well, making it easier than ever to coordinate your hardware from your front door to the back porch and everywhere in between.

Similar products: A good blazer and hair dye. Just like quality door hardware, these are simple ways to elevate your style by changing what people see first and most.

    Simplicity

Installing your door hardware and locks, not to mention using them on a regular basis, should be easy. Most of our door hardware requires just a screwdriver for installation, and with our patented Snap & Stay technology, there’s no need to juggle components and tools at the same time.

Schlage smart locks are also battery-operated, eliminating the need for hardwiring or calling an electrician during installation.

Using your lock should be easy, too. Storing multiple access codes, locking and unlocking your door remotely from anywhere, and monitoring access through an app are just some of the hallmarks of Schlage simplicity. If ease is a high priority for you, this might be one reason to increase your investment.

Similar product: Home delivery. How often have you paid a little extra for the pizza or groceries to be brought directly to your front door, just for the ease and convenience?

    Support

When you have a question about your locks or door hardware, you shouldn’t have to go on a wild goose chase for answers. We put solutions at your fingertips with online support ranging from frequently asked questions to installation and user guides, templates and more.

Similar product: Food service. When wait staff is attentive, friendly and knowledgeable, you know you’ll get the dining experience you deserve.

“You get what you pay for” is cliché for a reason. Confidence in getting what you want from your locks and door hardware might be worth the investment to you, particularly when it comes to the safety, simplicity and style of Schlage. For continued help and support in your door lock buying journey, be sure to reach out to us on Twitter or Facebook for help.

Smart lock - Wink - Schlage Connect
Powered by Z-Wave® technology, the Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt is a versatile smart lock that works with most smart home and alarm systems, including Wink. With easy installation and programming right at your fingertips, this smart lock provides utility out of the box but when paired with a compatible smart home hub, you can unlock even more convenient and advanced security features. Here are eight features you can expect when you pair your Schlage Connect lock with a Wink smart home hub.

    1. Remote access

Lock or unlock your door no matter where you are in the world. Because the Schlage Connect is powered by Z-wave, you need to pair it with a smart home hub, like Wink, to extend communication with your home’s wi-fi. This allows you to communicate with your lock via the Wink app when you are remote.

    2. Receive alerts

Get instant notifications whenever the door is unlocked. Whether it’s peace of mind knowing your kids arrived home on time or keeping tabs on your housekeeper, alerts keep you in-the-know on who’s coming and going from your home throughout the day.

    3. Control built-in alarm

Enable or disable the Schlage Connect’s built-in alarm when activity is detected at the door . Instead of changing your alarm settings through the lock itself, Wink makes it even easier to have full control of all the features Schlage Connect has to offer.

    4. Easy programming

Add, delete and name user codes from the Wink app. Instead of manually keeping track of all the codes you’ve activated for your lock, Wink makes it simple to get a glimpse of all programmed access codes and allows you to deactivate or change them as needed.

    5. Set reminders

Wink can also give you a reminder to remove codes when they are no longer needed . You will still need to go through the steps to delete the access code through the app but reminders give you peace of mind that you won’t forget a code that is no longer needed after a certain period of time making it even easier to manage and maintain multiple codes.

    6. Connect your smart lock with other products

Smart homes are most convenient when all your products are working together. If you have other devices connected to your Wink hub, you can set up a Robot so that one action triggers a series of others – like unlocking your front door after 6pm turns the light in your entryway on. Just note that for optimal security, you cannot use the Robot to unlock your deadbolt. Follow the Wink blog to stay up-to-date with added features and get inspired for new smart home routines.

    7. Create shortcuts

Both iOS and Android users can enable Wink widgets on their phone to access smart home scenes through the notification center (iPhone) or home screen (Android). This makes it easy to trigger an automation series you use often, like a Goodnight shortcut to power down all your smart devices and lock your doors.

    8. Pair your Schlage Connect with Amazon Alexa

Command your Schlage Connect to lock or unlock or check the status of your lock when you pair your Schlage Connect with Amazon Alexa via Wink. Get all the details on what Schlage Connect and Amazon Alexa can do here.

To make this all work, you’ll just need a Wink Hub or Wink Hub 2, Wi-Fi connection and an iOS or Android smartphone device. Visit wink.com to learn how to pair your smart lock with the Wink smart home hub and be sure to reach out to use on Facebook or Twitter with any questions.

Mid-century Modern - Amy Matthews - Schlage Custom

After 50 years, the clean, sleek, distinctive look of Mid-Century Modern has been making a comeback. But to Amy Matthews, Contractor, DIY Designer extraordinaire and TV host, it never really went away. And there’s a good reason for that. Mid-century modern style is all about simplicity and functionality. At its core, it’s about stripping things down to basic design, bare elements and the inclusion of natural elements and textures offset by touches of bold color and contrast. There’s a timelessness to it which has made it so unique since its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s.
Mid-century Modern - Door Hardware - Eller Lever - Schlage Custom

Mid-century modern was the direction Amy chose for creating an entire design around a single piece of Schlage door hardware – the Eller lever. In the second installment of her four-part series in which she creates imaginative mood boards in this fashion, Amy took her inspiration from the soft, simple lines of the Eller lever to design a mid-century modern masterpiece.

The Eller lever features a distinctive silhouette and a decidedly modern style with the brushed nickel finish serving as a contemporary highlight in contrast to the wood, stone and period touches that Amy selected.

It’s minimalist style to the max. And if you’ve watched Mad Men, you know the look. We think you will love Amy’s take on this iconic era of interior design.

Mid-century Modern - Amy Matthews - Schlage Custom

    The inspiration

Schlage's Eller lever was created to be mainstream enough to work in a variety of contemporary to transitional settings. Its soft, curving Scandinavian design and clean precision make it the ideal starting point for building a range of modernist looks. The Eller also pairs with a number of available trims and finishes which allow for versatility in design. Talk about open possibilities. According to Amy, she really "jives" on this particular look.

Mid-century Modern - Mood Board - Schlage Custom Eller Lever

The mood board: authentic, clean and all-natural

Starting with the Eller lever, Amy embraced the challenge of designing the mood board around the door hardware. She wanted immediate contrast with the rich, natural wood of the door and its ruddy texture. She also wanted to juxtapose the brushed nickel and modernity of the lever with warm hues and patterns. This was reflected by Schlage designers in the furniture stylings, the simplicity of the dark gray, textured tile flooring as well as the warm, inviting colors chosen for room accessories and appointments. The outcome was clean, modern, natural and truly inspired.

    The look: modern and sleek

Amy’s mood board carefully considered the entire aesthetic of the room. She built the mood board around the Schlage Custom Eller lever and paired it with a rich, natural wooden door. She wanted to really pull out the contrasts afforded by the naturalness of the wood, contrasting colors like pale green and dark gray with the brushed metal finish of the Eller lever (the only metal in the room). Other accent colors like corals and reds were included in the geometric accent patterns in the pillows, rug and other accessories.

Mid-century Modern - Eller Lever - Schlage Custom

    The name says it all

One system. Endless possibilities. Whether replacing outdated or broken locks, remodeling a single room or simply adding new, decorative details, Schlage Custom Door Hardware makes personalizing a single room–or an entire home–as simple and easy as can be. It’s perfect for tailoring door hardware designs to the specific needs of every room.

One screwdriver is all it takes to customize the style, finish and even functionality of Schlage Custom door hardware. If you're thinking about a single-room update, or even a whole-home renovation, one of the quickest, easiest and most affordable things you can do is update your door hardware.

Door hardware - Budget - Schlage

According to a recent Houzz survey, home renovations are on the rise, with 2017 yielding significant growth and 2018 expected to be even bigger. If you’re among those who are thinking about a single-room update, or even some manner of whole-home renovation, one of the quickest, easiest and most affordable things you can do is update your door hardware.

Updating your home’s door hardware is a project that can be easily customized to fit your project’s needs, regardless of your design concept or installation preferences. And best of all, it can be done affordably for any budget! With Schlage door hardware, whether you’re replacing a builder-grade doorknob with custom hardware or a keyed entrance door lock with a keyless smart lock, you can tackle this project in your spare time with just a screwdriver.

Going for a coordinated interior? Looking to blend a number of complementary styles? Are you exploring split finishes, giving each room its own, singular look? Whatever your preference, Schlage offers a wide range of simple, secure, stylish and affordable hardware options to fit your budget. With a little know-how, you’ll be on your way to a door hardware makeover that you can appreciate for years to come.

    Door hardware - $100 Budget - Schlage

SOLUTIONS IN THE $100 PRICE RANGE

For nearly a century, Schlage has been perfecting the door lock, offering an assortment of both mechanical and electronic door locks that have set industry standards for performance and style.

    Exterior

For around $100, you can replace your entry door lock choosing from a wide selection of deadbolts, knobs, levers and complete handlesets. In this price range, you can also upgrade a mechanical deadbolt, replacing it with a stylish, keyless electronic keypad lock or deadbolt to enjoy the industry’s highest residential security rating with the convenience of keyless access.

    Interior

As for your interior doors, that same $100 or so can replace upwards of 4 interior traditional door knobs or levers, depending upon function and the specific styles and finishes you choose.

When shopping for interior door hardware, it’s important to take things like trim, knob or lever style and finish into consideration. Premium decorative trims and styles could drive up the price of your interior hardware.

Another important consideration when shopping for interior hardware is the warranty. Because you will touch your interior door hardware several times per day, it’s important to look for quality hardware from a company that offers a warranty of some kind. Schlage offers a limited lifetime mechanical & finish warranty and limited 3-year electronics warranty.

    Door hardware - $500 Budget - Schlage

SOLUTIONS IN THE $500 PRICE RANGE

For around $500, you can coordinate the door hardware throughout your home, from your front door to your back door and pretty much any door in between.

Schlage brings you an assortment of smart lock options from which to choose, including the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt. They both set industry standards for keyless entry, as well as remote access management and monitoring from your smartphone. As an added bonus, each deadbolt fits standard door preps, installs with just a screwdriver, and is battery-operated, making them more accessible more than ever!

In the $500 price range, you can easily select and install a smart lock, matching handleset grip and accessories (like house numbers and kickplates).

According to Ted Roberts, Style & Design Chief for Allegion, maker of Schlage locks, “Your front door is not just for wreaths anymore. It’s a space where you can make a statement. Perhaps the easiest and most cost-efficient way to update your look is with new door hardware. With Schlage Custom™, you can create a door hardware look that’s unique to your home’s style. This collection allows you to easily match your interior door hardware with exterior Schlage Custom handlesets. You can also customize the locking function of interior doors quickly and easily; no tools required.

    Door hardware - $1000 Budget - Schlage

Schlage offers a wide range of keyless locks to fit your smart home needs. Each of our locks has different benefits for different users, allowing you to select the smart lock that’s right for you and your home. Do you prefer a Bluetooth or Z-wave enabled lock? Fall - Front Porch - Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt

It’s time to spruce-up your front porch to prepare for the holidays. Get our tips for the best fall front porch that will easily transition to winter.

Summer is out and fall is in. It’s time to give your front porch the spruce-up it’s been waiting for to prepare for the holidays. From simple home improvement to creative home décor, the opportunities to make a welcoming statement with your entryway are endless.

Fall - Front Porch - Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt

Image from Lark & Linen featuring Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt paired with Century front entry handle in Matte Black

    The first impression

With temperatures still relatively warm, yet no longer sweltering hot, it’s a great time to take on some outdoor projects. Consider giving your front door a fresh coat of paint. Pick from bright colors to give it an extra punch for the season. Vibrant reds, oranges and blues are among Pantone’s favorite hues for the fall and winter.

While you’re at it, update your door’s style with new accessories, including house numbers and coat hooks. Because when was the last time you hosted a cool-weather get-together and said, “I have too many coat hooks”?

    Cold weather hospitality

Don’t leave your guests standing out in bad weather, either. By installing a smart lock, you can give each guest a code instead of hiding a key under the mat. The Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt can be programmed with up to 30 different access codes and work with a variety of smart home systems like Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

    Fall classics

Showcase your fall creativity with home décor, too. Incorporating pumpkins on your porch is always a winner, regardless of whether you leave them orange for an extra pop of color, paint them to match a monochromatic design or let the family carve them for a touch of fun.

HGTV.com highlights metallic elements as an increasingly popular way to catch the eye of passers-by. A copper jug, either brand new and shiny or with an aged patina, can add a touch of glitter as well as hold your favorite fall foliage. It’s a great way to mix and match textures as well as color.

    Cozy details

Continue playing with textures by replacing the cushions on your patio furniture or adding an outdoor rug. Think outside the box and hang with some outdoor curtains to create a cozy nook, perfect for a private cup of tea and leaf peeping from the porch.

Of course, the sun is setting earlier, so don’t forget the lights. Set, or create, the mood with a new outdoor lighting system. Houzz suggests flameless candles for creating a safe and relaxing escape, while a strand of twinkle lights will seamlessly carry you into the winter.

    Budget-friendly curb appeal

If time and budget are concerns, especially with the holidays approaching, consider options that will let you change your porch’s look with minimal investment. Choose a wreath that can switch from Thanksgiving to winter by simply swapping out a few floral elements. Containers with your typical garden plants can go from Halloween to winter wonderland by replacing the pumpkin next to the regular plantings with an artificial snowman. Follow Schlage on Pinterest for plenty of inspiration.

No matter how you choose to update your curb appeal for fall, remember that it’s also a time to enjoy family, friends and festivity. Trying some of these simple tips will help make it an attractive, and stress-free, season for all.

Designers find inspiration for their work in nature, art, specific time periods, exotic locales and in a truly limitless number of other places. Inspiration fuels imagination. So imagine what would happen if you designed an entire room around a single piece of Schlage door hardware? Amy Matthews, DIY Designer extraordinaire and TV host, set out to do just that. In this, the first of a four-part series on Amy’s adventure, she uses the Schlage Custom Whitney lever as inspiration to bring an authentic touch of traditional style to a rustic farmhouse room design.
Farmhouse Door Hardware - Whitney Lever - Schlage Custom

    The inspiration

The Schlage Custom Whitney lever brings an unmistakable old-world, New Orleans/Spanish Colonial style to Amy’s farmhouse look. The goal: bring quintessential elements such as wrought iron together with the rustic colors and textures one would find in an old but stylish farmhouse and then add modern touches.

Farmhouse Style - Mood Board - Amy Matthews

The mood board: a unique pairing of traditional and contemporary

Amy’s ideas took the character, look and feel of rough-hewn wood and combined them with more modern fixtures, lighting, furnishings and accessories. She contrasted the look of a modern door with a more traditional take on wood flooring. The Whitney lever in matte black served as the inspiration for the entire room design, its look of vintage wrought iron the foundation of a decor that could be both versatile and stylish.

Farmhouse Kitchen - Whitney Lever - Schlage

The look : timeless and distinctive

The mood board meticulously reflected Amy’s thinking, from the flooring to furnishings to the smallest accessory, and was used by Schlage designers as a cornerstone for finishing out the above room design. Unique for her, she built the entire vision upon a door lever, the Whitney lever, which she described as both challenging and fun. Amy ultimately deciding to pair the Schlage Custom lever with a white door (a change from the mood board), allowing the dark richness and character of the lever to “pop.” She then layered in other features and touches with similar finishes to bring everything together in one cohesive look.

Bright, expressive colors are also popular, with Ultra Violet, of all things, taking center stage as Pantone’s Color of The Year. Styles, colors and character are changing from room to room as people express their own personal style and strive to “embrace natural character and authentic textures in their home” according to Leigh Spicher, design director for a leading home builder.

Ted Talks - Tiny Homes - Schlage

How can one downsize to what is essential and important, live happily and comfortably on a budget all while serving as a steward of the environment?

Ted Talks - Tiny Houses - Schlage

The Tiny House movement can be credibly traced back to Henry David Thoreau, his 1843 Walden Pond experiment (and the book that came of it) as well as the $28 dollars he spent to build what amounted to one of the first true “tiny houses.” It was 150 square feet and featured a fireplace, a table, a desk and three chairs. Its purpose? To see if a person can eschew the trappings of luxury and live happily and comfortably with less. For less.

Today’s tiny house is a little bigger – around 400 square feet on average – and often includes a kitchen and bathroom. But the general concept, re-introduced in 1997 and exploding today, remains the same. How can one downsize to what is essential and important, live happily and comfortably on a budget all while serving as a steward of the environment?

To get a unique perspective on the phenomenon, we asked Ted Roberts, the Style and Design Chief at Allegion, to share some thoughts on tiny living and how a tiny home and its owner can benefit from the Schlage door hardware products that Ted helps design.

    Q&A with Ted Roberts

    Q. Why invest in the latest Schlage door hardware when part of the motivation for building a tiny home is saving money?

    A. “Just because it’s tiny doesn’t make it any less of a house. In fact, these homeowners have downsized to the point that they’re only really keeping their most prized, most valuable possessions.”

“It may be counter-intuitive, but they actually need the better locks. From a security standpoint, there’s less between themselves and the outside world than you’d find in your typical 2,600-square-foot home. In the final analysis, how can someone afford not to have the best locks possible for their tiny house? You’ve got maybe an entrance or two and maybe an interior door, so why not get the best lock you possibly can to secure what’s important to you?”

    Tiny Homes - Schlage

    Q. Would you say that cost, then, is the main driver behind the tiny living phenomenon?

A.“It’s one of them, for certain. The average cost of a tiny home is only around $20,000. But when you look at the costs and then factor in everything else, it’s really more than just saving money. Tiny living helps to reduce one’s carbon footprint. What’s more, the lifestyle really requires you to take stock of what’s important and make some significant decisions about where and how you want to live. It’s a little house, but it involves some pretty big thinking.”

    Q. Who is buying and building these tiny homes?

    A. “Believe it or not, 2 out of 5 tiny homes is owned by someone over 50 years old. Owners of tiny homes are individualists looking for something different; some fun in their lives. They’re principled, emotionally engaged, they know what they want and they go and get it. There’s a measure of pride and ownership building a home and a lifestyle like this. It’s like joining a club, of sorts, where tiny homeowners find a measure of identity and self-actualization through the investments and the decisions they make to embrace tiny living.”

“Identifying with folks like this is an important part of who we are and what we do. That hasn’t changed for us since Walter Schlage started the company in 1920. This allows us to design products for a typical home, door hardware specially made for really demanding commercial applications or, in this case, stylish and secure door hardware that fits perfectly with the style and performance needs of the tiny home.”

    Q. As a style influencer, what are some challenges you’d anticipate an owner of a tiny home might face selecting the right door hardware?

    A. “It’s not the hardware that’s the challenge. All of our products are refined for user experience, aesthetics, quality – all without sacrificing security. And that’s regardless of application. For the owner of a tiny home, it really is a matter of finding products that fit the style and character of their house. That’s as true of the appliances they choose as it is of their door locks. These aren’t just boxes. This isn’t camping. These aren’t trailers. I liken them to those quaint motor court cottages that were popular in the 20’s and 30’s and they range in style from rustic to Victorian to ultra-modern. So, it’s important that we provide flexible styles and finishes that complement these homes, just as we would any home. And we do, along with the security and convenience people expect from Schlage.”

Tiny Home - Security - Schlage

    Q. Anything else a tiny living homeowner needs to prepare for, security-wise?

    A. “There are a lot of important possessions that you would normally keep in a garage or shed at home that you wouldn’t have room for in a typical tiny house. Bicycles. Motorcycles. Utility and recreational vehicles. Your lawnmower. Your grill. Our sister company, Kryptonite, is known for its specialty locks and offers a wide selection of smart, serious security solutions. We have your tiny home secured, inside and out.”

“If you’re thinking about opening your home to guests, carefully weigh the pros and cons. Think it through from every angle. And prepare yourself and your home for the tremendous responsibility you’re taking on, as well as for the tremendous opportunity. Take advantage of the latest smart home technologies to ensure a great experience for you and your guests. And look to Schlage to provide the style, simplicity and security you’ll need, plus the peace of mind that can only come from a brand that’s this experienced and trusted.”

    Q. With tiny homes often available as vacation rentals on Airbnb and similar platforms, are there any special security considerations?

    A. “Home hosting is huge right now and it only makes sense that the tiny house and home hosting phenomenon would intersect at some point. Again, a tiny house is still a house, so security, convenience, affordability and style play just as important a role in determining one’s selection of door hardware. For instance, a Schlage programmable electronic lock or a smart lock would be ideal for the exterior doors. You get the convenience of an easily changeable and assignable code versus having to provide a key for your rental properties. And with smart locks, you’re providing the added benefits of managing home access using your smartphone. That goes for whatever size home you’re renting.”

Tiny home - Smart lock - Schlage

Image and quote from Matt and Melina of @ourtinybeachhouse, minimalist DIYers who use Schlage locks.

    Q. Do you see yourself living in a tiny house at some point?

    A. “The simplicity, the style, the reduction of complications in one’s life – these have a real appeal to me. It’s just that by the time I made room for my more than 1,000 books on architecture and architectural design and all my art supplies, it would no longer be a tiny house!”

Whatever the motivation behind your interest in tiny living, you can look to Schlage to provide the safety, simplicity and style you’ll need plus the peace of mind that can only come from a brand backed by almost 100 years of experience and trust.

It was little more than two years ago that Amazon’s Echo took the holiday shopping season by storm and Google Home’s voice-activated speaker brought Google Assistant from the phone to the living room. They were taking the baton passed by assistants like Siri and Cortana who, as far back as 2011, began replacing phone apps in the search for everything from good pizza to directions to Mozart’s birthday.

Google Assistant is now available on more than 400 million devices, close to 95% of all Android devices, worldwide. Looking ahead, comScore predicts that half of all searches will be done via voice by 2020 with a sizeable percentage of those on a device like a voice-activated speaker – in other words, on devices without screens. From turning down the volume on your stereo to dimming your lights to locking your front door, these technologies and their application in the smart home are fast becoming the rule rather than the exception.

Rob Martens, President of Allegion Ventures and futurist for Allegion and their lock-manufacturing division, Schlage, looks ahead to where it’s all going. No stranger to innovation and the implementation of emerging tech, Martens has both insight and strong opinions on the rapidly evolving industry. He is responsible for identifying those mega-trends in technology that will best serve Schlage’s customers and then bringing them to life with products such as the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and the Schlage Connect™ Touchscreen Deadbolt.

    Smart lock - Schlage

    Q&A with Rob Martens

    Q. What was your first indication that home integration was somewhere that Schlage had to be?

    A. “My focus, my responsibility, is on anything that could have a meaningful impact on our customers and our business. Anything that can significantly improve our customers’ experience with our products is something we’re going to be interested in. We first started exploring connected door hardware in 2008 and we’ve escalated our own efforts as the technologies have improved and been increasingly accepted. Schlage’s first patent was for a door lock that also turned on your lights. That was in 1909. So, I guess you could say it’s in our DNA.”

Rob Martens - Smart home - Schlage

    Q. So, the smart home is here to stay?

    A. “I think that the adoption of the technology, and the technology itself, is so significant, I foresee a time in the very near future we’re not even calling it a “smart home” any more – just a “home.” It’s going to go from something new to something we all accept as the way things are. Our job is to make these new technologies accessible and relevant so that we remove any intimidation factor that may exist. Once we do that, you’re looking at an idea whose time has come and, indeed, is here to stay.”

    Q. How has Schlage’s technology addressed this “intimidation factor” and what have you done to make your connected technologies more user friendly, particularly for voice?”

    A. “Believe it or not, the way you make the technology better is by not worrying about the technology but rather what the user wants to accomplish with it. We know things are constantly changing and technology should continue to evolve with the ever-changing needs of our customers. Our focus is on applying these technologies in such a way that our customers, regardless of what system they choose for their home automation, only need one lock that works, is easy to use, is secure, and can evolve with their needs. Ideally, we’d provide one lock you didn’t need to change because of obsolescence. It’s all about our ability to continue to meet their needs whether they’re locking their door with a keypad, their smartphone or with a voice prompt. It shouldn’t matter. We need to give them a good experience, whatever their preferences. It’s not technology for technology’s sake, it has to meet a defined need.”

    Q. You’re in the security business. How do you provide connectivity and convenience as well as security?

    A. “That is the single most important factor we look at – for today and tomorrow – when it comes to all Schlage products. Privacy. Security. Peace of mind. That’s our job. That’s what a lock does. We start with the fact that we are in the life safety business, and we ask ourselves – especially with the integration of new technologies like voice activation – if what’s happening when you ask Alexa to lock your door is exactly what you want to happen. That’s why, for instance, you can’t ask Alexa to unlock your door without providing a security code. So, again, you take the actual technology out of it, you look at who you’re serving and what they need, and you work from there to build the technologies and products that meet those needs. Not the other way around.”

    Q. That’s an interesting point of view, coming from a futurist at a company that prides itself on technological innovation.

    A. “When you get right down to it, our customers don’t really care about the details – about the features and functions and bells and whistles. Does it work? Is it secure? Is it easy to use? Does it add value? We have to start there. If not, then we’re not doing our jobs. We solve for that, and then we can focus on convenience features and – also extremely important to our customers – style. So much of what happens with your home starts at the front door. It’s the ultimate first impression. We work really hard to make it a good one, and to bring our customers the security they demand, the style that reflects who they are and a great user experience.”

    Rob Martens - Voice-enabled tech - Schlage

    Q. What’s next?

    A. “My job is to look at products, services and technologies that are proving disruptive in other industries – the Internet of Things and voice-activated home automation technologies are a good example of that – and then see how we can apply those disruptive elements and what they represent to our products. For us, it’s going to be the evolution of home automation tech, biometrics, face recognition and machine learning that continue to make our products relevant and current without losing sight of what our core mission is. We need to continue to listen to our customers and then safely apply appropriate technologies to our products based on what they’re asking for. We don’t try to do everything on our own. We are working with Apple, Amazon, Google and other emerging tech companies to help identify what’s next and then bring value to their technologies, all in service to our shared customers.”

According to Martens, that combination of thinking ahead and applying technology responsibly leads to important insights. For example, connecting a garage door opener to a fire alarm in a home automation system.

“The last thing you’d want to happen in a home fire,” says Martens, “ is for your alarm system to automatically open your garage door. While, at first blush, it would seem logical to provide such an escape route, this actually creates a rush of oxygen that can fuel the fire and make it worse. These are the kinds of problems, these unintended consequences, to which Schlage’s expertise in fire and life safety can offer solutions. We need to have the capacity to think through such issues in developing connected technologies.”

Connected technologies provide an opportunity for companies like Schlage to create tailored experiences for their customers. Two-thirds of smart home speaker users conduct local searches for products, services or local business at least once a week. More than half search daily and nearly one-third of them will visit the website of a local business after conducting their search. What’s more, 60 percent of them just started doing so in the last year!

When you factor in the rapid adoption of home automation, it’s clear that these technologies are going to continue to play an increasing role in our daily lives. Companies like Amazon, Apple, Google and Schlage – and influencers like Allegion’s Rob Martens – are going to continue to define what’s next and develop technologies, products and services that definitively answer that question.

Ted talks - Home Hosting - Schlage

Managing home security and protecting one’s personal property – and personal space – is an important consideration for a prospective home host.

Ted Talks - Home Hosting - Schlage

Technology has been a big driver behind the 26% year-over-year growth of the home-hosting industry in the US. App-driven technologies from platforms like Airbnb are powering this segment of the gig economy. Smart-home technologies are giving hosts control over home automation, management and security. And projected industry revenue of nearly $170 billion is attracting more potential hosts to the category than ever before. According to the 2017 Global Hotel Trends Report published by Tourico, more new hosting properties have been added than new hotel beds in the last year.

Managing home security and protecting one’s personal property – and personal space – is an important consideration for a prospective home host. Ted Roberts, the Style and Design Chief at Allegion, shares some insights into the home hosting phenomenon and Schlage’s role in providing door hardware like the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt. These technologies make security management convenient, affordable and smart.

    Q&A with Ted Roberts

    Q. What are the key factors propelling the home-hosting phenomenon?

    A. “Like so much in our changing culture, a lot is built upon rapidly evolving technologies. From a security standpoint, we’re talking an evolution of such things as security cameras, changeable lock codes, programmable security systems – a lot of which can be easily and securely controlled from your smart phone. So much of this simply couldn’t have happened before the technology caught up with the need. All the more important since the category has evolved to be so focused on personal fulfillment and satisfaction.

Ted Talks - Home Hosting - Smart locks - Schlage
“We’re not just talking about renting a room. Hosts are sharing their homes and belongings, sharing meals, socializing with their guests and sharing themselves in ways we’ve never seen before. Our new smart lock technologies really assure a high level of control, trust and peace of mind.”
Ted Talks - Home Hosting - Schlage

    Q. What are some general security tips you can provide a prospective host?

    A. “Hosts need to think of their homes both holistically, in terms of overall security, but also in sectors. You’re bringing people into your home. First and foremost is general house access, and a programmable electronic lock or a smart lock are ideal for exterior doors. Think of this simply as providing the convenience of an easily changeable and assignable code versus providing a key. With smart locks, you’re providing the added benefits of managing home access using your smartphone.

For adapting interior doors to your specific needs, there’s Schlage Custom™ which facilitates a custom designer look, while adding the flexibility of switching a non-locking door to one that locks in a matter of seconds.

“You’ll also want to think about access throughout the home. Are there areas that need to be secured – like a home office or utility closet or family area? Many of these rooms are ones you don’t normally think about locking up. In a home-hosting situation, it’s important to really think through how you would like manage your whole-home access.” In cases such as these, a product designed for use on exterior doors, may also have an application inside.

    Q. What about the specific advantages of Schlage door hardware?

    A. “In addition to the benefits I’ve already outlined, something else to think about is aesthetics. With Schlage door hardware, hosts don’t need to sacrifice style for convenience and performance. In much the same way our products add to the curb appeal of a home that’s being sold, the style of Schlage products provides an appealing point of difference for host rental properties as well. We give hosts the opportunity to incorporate door hardware more beautifully, as well as providing security and practicality. What’s going to make your house, your property and the experience you provide stand out? We see that as part of our job.”

    Q. How do I know if hosting is right for me?

    A. “Are you a people person? As a host, you’re not just giving people a place to sleep or renting a room. You’re giving your time, your patience, your hospitality. Prepare to adjust to your guests’ specific needs to provide the best possible experience. How flexible are you? What about your schedule? You’ll want to be prepared for any eventuality, whether it be providing directions, lending your guests a bicycle or your car or something as mundane as having an extra toothbrush or some toothpaste handy. Don’t forget, you’re competing against hotels, so you’ll want to be prepared to truly share of your home and of yourself. If that’s you, then welcome to home hosting.”

    Q. How do I know if my house is right for hosting?

    A. “So much depends on whether you’ll be sharing your home while your guests are there or are planning to be away. But in general, the ideal host home will have extra bedrooms and bathrooms, it’ll either be a private home or a dedicated apartment or condo and it’ll be conveniently located near area attractions, transportation and etc. It’ll have all the amenities a guest would look for in a hotel – from cable to internet to clean towels and bedding. Is there something unique about your residence – is it historic, famous or haunted? Is your home a place you’d want to know about if you were travelling elsewhere? If so, you’ve got yourself a great home hosting prospect.”

    Q. Any other general tips?

    A. “Expect the unexpected. Really try to anticipate those things you may not have thought about. Are there any legal restrictions (Does your mortgage and insurance agreements allow you to host? Do you have the right kind of homeowner’s insurance? Does your HOA or lease allow you to host?) These types of considerations are just the beginning. Are you prepared to have things break, be it appliances or personal items? What if a guest gets ill? Do you have any home safety concerns that could pose a liability? Finally, again, will your guests feel secure in your home? That’s our focus, and it has been for almost 100 years. Make sure your guests know that and give them every reason to come back again or recommend you to friends and family.”

If you’re thinking about opening your home to guests, carefully weigh the pros and cons. Think it through from every angle. And prepare yourself and your home for the tremendous responsibility you’re taking on, as well as for the tremendous opportunity. Take advantage of the latest smart home technologies to assure a great experience for you and your guests. And look to Schlage to provide the style, simplicity and security you’ll need plus the peace of mind that can only come from a brand that’s this experienced and trusted.

5 reasons a locksmith is worth the investment

    Hiring a Locksmith - Schlage

The decision to hire a professional locksmith can pay for itself in time, convenience and peace of mind when it comes to something as important as helping to secure your home.

Hiring a Locksmith - Rekey locks - Schlage

Like most things, the decision to hire a professional in lieu of employing a DIY solution has its trade-offs. But the decision to hire a professional locksmith can pay for itself in time, convenience and peace of mind when it comes to something as important as helping to secure your home.

Schlage has many products that are easy to install with nothing but a screwdriver and some handy know-how. But we’ll also be the first to recommend a licensed, registered locksmith if you’re looking to rekey your locks or undertaking a big task like replacing all the door hardware in your home. And if you’ve ever locked yourself out and locked your keys in, then you already know how valuable it is to have a relationship with a local locksmith or at least know where to find one. Allegion’s (maker of Schlage Locks) online locksmith locator tool gives you quick, easy access to a registered professional.

Here are the 5 top reasons to think about letting a locksmith do it:

    1. Convenience

A licensed, registered locksmith will have the tools and the expertise to handle most any challenge. And that’s 24/7, 365 days a year. You’ll save time, get professional service on your own schedule (even in an emergency), and help is rarely more than a click or phone call away.

    2. Knowledge and Experience

Did you just move into a new home and are looking to rekey your exterior doors, providing single key convenience for all your locks? This is just one example of service requiring a level of expertise even the most intrepid DIY enthusiast probably doesn’t possess. No worries when you leave it to a qualified ALOA (Associated Lock Smiths of America) professional and to locks you can trust.

According to Jared Gehle, Schlage Channel Sales Manager: “You should look to a locksmith anytime you’re not sure what you need or have any doubts about how to upgrade or install or upgrade your door hardware.”

    3. Quality you can trust

Schlage doesn’t make locks that are easy to rekey since they generally don’t meet our strength and integrity standards. We recommend the job be left to professionals and to the guarantee of quality service they’ll provide.

Says Gehle: “Fitting new hardware to existing door openings or undertaking something potentially complicated like rekeying or replacing a number of locks throughout your home can be a lot of work. A locksmith allows you to prepare for any eventuality, saving you time, money and aggravation.”

    4. Peace of mind

In more than a third of the two-million-plus burglaries that occur each year, the perpetrators come in through the front door. Don’t trust your home security to just anyone. Or any old lock. The Schlage brand is trusted by professionals and home owners alike with a heritage built on nearly 100 years of innovation, strength, quality and style.

    5. Value

You get what you pay for. Getting the job done right, right from the start, will pay for itself many times over. If you have a non-standard door, if you’re replacing locks and the door measurements don’t conform to Schlage specifications (if you’re replacing a mortise lock, for instance), these kinds of adjustments are many times beyond the skill level – and patience – of a DIY project.

    Hiring a Locksmith - Schlage

Gehle concludes: “Even if you think you know what you’re doing, don’t hesitate to contact a locksmith for advice, a specific product recommendation or for helpful tips. There’s no substitute for expertise and experience. They’ve got all the right tools. And a locksmith will be there for you at every turn.”

Considering hiring a locksmith to rekey your locks or install new ones? Define what is important to you, choose a licensed lock professional you trust and visit Schlage.com for more information and a wide range of innovative, stylish, top-grade door hardware possibilities.

Selecting outdoor décor is fun because it’s so easy to switch things up season to season without spending a fortune. You’ve already seen a few of our easy DIY tips for increasing your home’s curb appeal this summer. Here are a few more great ideas to steal: the top outdoor trends of 2018 courtesy of Style and Design Chief Ted Roberts.

    Q&A with Ted Roberts

    Q. What are some of the top outdoor trends you’re seeing pop up this year?

    A. We have been seeing a closer association between the outdoors and indoors, both this year and in 2017. This is reflected not only in the popularity of natural materials, textures and floral-inspired motifs throughout the home, but also in the items we see adorning porches, patios, decks, and yards. Products for exterior cooking, entertainment, decorative fireplaces, porch ceiling fans, and comfortable outside furniture all enable the extension of the living space to the outdoors. As the backyard becomes more of a destination, the door between the inside and outside commands new importance. Many of the technological features of the front door are now equally important to back and side doors.

Ted Talks - Front Door - Schlage

    Q. What are the trending styles, colors and types of door hardware for exterior doors?

    A. Exterior doors are getting larger and making more use of windows. On the front door, it’s common to see one large window, either frosted or textured, to allow light in without offering those outside a clear view into the home. The back door may have a clear window to further blend interior space with the exterior porch, patio, or deck. We’ve even seen windows covering almost the entire door, further supporting the idea of bringing the outdoors inside. We are also seeing a trend towards rich, saturated color used selectively throughout the home as a statement and combined with muted warm tones. This is especially true on front doors where yellow, purple, red, emerald green, cobalt blue all can be used to make a statement. Stained wood doors also remain popular, with stains trending darker and richer. For hardware, matte black stands out as the perfect color to coordinate with every choice of door color. We are even seeing door frames in black.

    Q. What sort of technology trends are you seeing in the outdoor space?

    A. Smart locks continue to gain popularity because they can add so much convenience to daily life. The idea of being able to secure the house, yet securely allow access to the homeowner without a key is appealing regardless of the door used. Keeping track of the kids as they come and go, and having control over the door lock from wherever you are can offer major peace of mind. As these features become standard at the front door, the expectation for other doors to adopt the technology increases. These locks strive to enhance and simplify life through technology. As always, it’s best to look for a reputable company (like Schlage) that understands door hardware and home security just as well as they understand smart technology.

    Q. Which of these trends do you see living long enough to lead us into 2019?

    A. The merging of the indoor and outdoor space is a trend that is here to stay. We see growing interest in simplifying and calming, and this is evident in the natural materials and organic style that continues to grow in popularity. Technology is also shifting towards simpler, more intuitive solutions. Going forward technology will continue to expand into appliances of all types with a growing focus on refining and humanizing the experience.

5 tips to make your outdoor DIY dreams come true

With this easy DIY list, any homeowner can up the ante on their home’s curb appeal and get the summer started right!

Summertime is for fun in the sun, enjoying the great outdoors and getting active! There’s no better way to do all three than cracking open the shed and getting down to business making sure your home’s exterior is primed and ready for cook-outs, pool parties, or whatever else you have planned. With this easy DIY list, any homeowner can up the ante on their home’s curb appeal and get the summer started right!

    1. Get cooking

Why just grill when you can grill in style? And we don’t mean breaking the bank by creating the ultimate backyard oasis – there are lots of simple ways to make your grilling area stand out. Add some sparkle with decorative LED lights; hang them on a trellis above the grill so they do double-duty as task lighting. Just make sure they’re hung high enough to avoid excessive heat exposure!

Even if you like to keep the formal eating area separate, make sure you have some kind of seating near the grill – especially during parties. Similar to having a breakfast bar in the kitchen spread with snacks, this lets you keep chatting with your guests and being the life of the party while you’re preparing them an epic meal. And snacks. Always have snacks.

You can also pick a theme like nautical or surf style to give your outdoor grilling area a memorable personality. You don’t need to buy expensive outdoor furniture – a few small but well-placed decorative touches can be enough to make a statement.

    2. Make the cut

Never underestimate the power of landscaping. A well-groomed yard is non-negotiable when it comes to upping your curb appeal. There’s no need to become a master grower and design intricate gardens. Make an impact with just a few solid standbys: regularly trim the grass and bushes, and make merciless war on weeds. Your neighbors will thank you for it!

    3. Touch it up

It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do. You can go the whole nine yards and choose a fresh new palette, or simply refresh what you already have to add polish. Easy DIY painting projects that can freshen up your exterior include shutters, trim, doors, and porch enclosures. Annual touch ups are also a great way to prevent damage that can happen when paint is allowed to weather and flake off. Check out this article from Houzz to learn the right way to do outdoor paint touch ups.

    4. Beautify

Thanks to the latest innovations in paint, even the saddest and sorriest looking outdoor furniture can be revived. Make sure the furniture is still structurally sound. If it isn’t and it’s plastic or metal, it may be time to go shopping for something new. If it’s wood and can be repaired, you can easily brighten up the look of it. The latest spray paints can adhere to just about any surface, and weather the elements like a champ for a long-lasting finish. This is an easy outdoor project than can be completed in the space of a weekend to add a bright, summery touch to your outdoor space.

    5. Modernize

Every parent knows that summertime is the time when the kids run rampant! Keep better track of their comings and goings – and add a little flash to your front door – with a smart lock. This is an easy 10-minute update, and you can pair it with an elegant handleset grip in the perfect finish to add curb appeal – our adjustable throughbolt helps ensure you won’t have trouble fitting your new Schlage handleset grip onto your door. But your favorite thing about a connected lock is bound to be the convenience.

With a Z-Wave enabled lock like the Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt, you can connect it to your existing smart home or alarm system so it works with your other smart devices and allows you to check in remotely and make sure the door is locked, or unlock it for a guest when you’re running late. Set up a smart home automation scene so your entry hall lights come on as soon you unlock the door at night. There are many possibilities, and exact features offered vary depending on the smart home system. Most will let you use your lock with Amazon Alexa voice control services, so the next time you need to lock the door behind you but your hands are full, you can easily do it just by asking Alexa.

A Bluetooth enabled smart lock, like the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt, doesn’t require an existing smart home system – you can use it with your smartphone right out of the box. Add a Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter so you can pair the lock with your home WiFi network and lock/unlock remotely, as well as customize notifications so you always know when the kids get home. The Schlage Sense lock also offers voice control integrations with Alexa and Google Assistant.

Ted Talks - Frank Lloyd Wright - Schlage

Today is the birthday of an absolutely iconic American architect: Frank Lloyd Wright. Born on June 8, 1867, Wright was more than just an architect – he also dabbled in interior design, writing, and teaching, and you can easily see his influence still alive today in some of the most well-known design trends.

We sat down with Ted Roberts, our Style and Design Chief, to tell us a little more about Wright and how he has influenced home and interior design today.

    Q&A with Ted Roberts

    Q. What kind of designs was Frank Lloyd Wright known for?

    A. “What’s interesting about Frank’s work is that it spans a pretty long period of time, so he worked in several different styles. The style of his early work is Prairie, where the colors and materials are somewhat similar to Arts & Crafts, but more focused on the social aspect of the space. There was a lot of focus on combining the interior and exterior of the home – bringing outside materials inside and blending the two. These styles tend to be lower to the ground, with a lot of horizontal lines and built-in oak woodwork, stone, with colors of ocher, brown and green. One of his strategies for merging the interior and exterior of the home was to create ‘walls of windows’ – large stretches of glass that opened the home up to the outside environment.

His next period is known as Textile Brick, which took place in the 1920s and 30s during the Art Deco period. This was his version of Art Deco in fact, which featured a combination of smooth surfaces and highly ornamental stone and block patterns.
Usonian was his last major style, which began in the late 30s until his death. This style was very organic, incorporating curves and straight lines but with a more asymmetrical aesthetic that featured a lot of odd angles.”

    Q. What was Wright’s overall philosophy toward architecture?

    A. “Over his entire lifespan, you can see that his work evolved so as not to become outdated, but his primary philosophy always stayed the same – it was only the strategies he used to carry out that philosophy that changed. Wright always believed that architecture was at its best when it was honest to its environment, incorporating local materials and a design that is harmonious with its natural surroundings. Falling Water is the perfect example of this philosophy – it’s a beautiful home built with local materials from the ground up that melds with its surroundings in a way that feels totally natural.

Ted Talks - Frank Lloyd Wright - Schlage
Wright also believed that the needs and character of the owner were important to the design, as well. While community and having shared space was important to him, Wright was loyal to the American ideal of individualism. With the industrial revolution and standardized, repeatable designs becoming the norm, he was always striving for a unique style different from the Victorian and Edwardian homes that were popular when he first began his career.”

    Q. What is Frank Lloyd Wright’s legacy today? Where do you see his influence?

    A. “Wright’s philosophy of personal independence and blending into nature can still be seen in both architecture and interior design today. But his most important contribution has been the emphasis on open spaces. The Edwardian and Victorian architecture that was popular during his early days featured a lot of very closed off, formalized spaces. Wright opted for an open floor plan that is very popular today because it allows families to interact even when they are in different sections of the house. No one is siloed – there are the standard private areas, bedroom and bathroom, but there is also more opportunity for connection and socializing in an open floor plan.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Wright though is simply his notoriety. I think most people, at least in America, would name him as the one architect they’re aware of – even though there are so many others with comparable talent. His impact and recognition level is very impressive and just go to show how iconic his designs could be – especially when you think about how many of his designs have become museums.”

What really makes a lock secure?

Home Security - Secure locks - Schlage

When it comes to exterior door hardware, quality matters for both security and aesthetics.

When it comes to exterior door hardware, quality matters for both security and aesthetics. You need to choose a lock you can trust to keep your belongings and loved ones safe and secure. A great bonus is if it happens to enhance the curb appeal of your home too! Here's what you need to know to choose the most secure, and stylish deadbolt and locks for each entry point of your home.
Home Security - Secure Locks - Schlage

    Door hardware grades

The first step to finding the most secure exterior door hardware for your home is to look for hardware that has been tested against the highest industry standards, like the BHMA residential grading system. BHMA is a group of industry experts who grade residential door hardware performance in the categories of Security, Durability and Finish. A grade of ‘C’ is good, ‘B’ is better, and ‘A’ is best. A grade of AAA is the best grade possible in all three categories.

Home Security - Door hardware grades - Schlage
Now that you understand how to find the best possible grade (AAA) for deadbolts and locks, here are a few additional features to look for when choosing the most secure lock for your home:

    Anti-pick shield

Many Schlage locks come with an integrated anti-pick shield to provide added security. The shield doesn’t impact the look of the lock, but it does strengthen it against lock pick attacks.

    1-inch bolt with spinning pin

Schlage locks come with a solid zinc 1-inch bolt for added kick-in resistance. This is larger than many bolts on the market, and it does make a difference in security. Because of this larger, sturdier bolt, Schlage locks require a larger bore hole than those required by competitors. Widening the bore hole may take an extra few minutes if you’re switching from another brand to Schlage, but the added security is well worth it.

Schlage bolts also include a hardened steel pin inside that spins in response to sawing attacks, so it can’t be cut through. Plus, a half inch of the bolt remains in the housing when locked for even more kick-in resistance.

    Longer screws

Schlage offers a strike reinforcement plate with 3-inch screws that also add more kick-in resistance. Be advised though, if you have a sidelight (a window that runs parallel to your door on the side that latches), the 3-inch screws may be too long to use. This is one of many reasons that sidelights should be avoided as they are a security liability.

    Sleek profile

A low profile face on a deadbolt makes it just about impossible to grab with a wrench or pull off.

Take your lock strength and security a step further with a keyless, electronic lock. Here are a couple more attractive security features that are specific to electronic locks only:

    Completely keyless

Some locks, like the Schlage Touch™ Keyless Touchscreen Lock, don’t come with a key cylinder. Many homeowners feel comfortable having a backup key option, but the truth is that once you adopt an electronic lock, it is highly unlikely you’ll ever need a key again. Most electronic lock users stop using keys completely, given how easy it is to share access electronically or with an access code. With a low battery indicator and up to 1-year battery life standard across our electronic locks, you don’t have to worry about getting locked out and needing that key (just don’t ignore the indicator!)

But it’s not just easy – it’s more secure. With no cylinder on the lock, there’s no opportunity to pick the lock or create a fake ‘bump’ key to bypass it.

Even if you don’t go completely keyless, electronic locks make it possible to completely eliminate the need for spare keys that can easily fall into the wrong hands. Just use access codes that can be easily created and deleted as needed. Plus, with no spare keys floating around, there’s no need to ever rekey the lock.

    Encryption

All Schlage electronic locks come with encryption for a secure connection. Schlage is committed to offering electronic options that add convenience without sacrificing security, and that’s why we always design our products with data privacy and encryption needs top of mind.

When choosing products that are meant to protect our homes and families, it’s important to look for the best. Keep an eye out for these features next time you’re shopping around – or save some time and just grab a Schlage lock, where all of these features and more come standard.

Whether you’re replacing locks on a new home or looking to add a little more security to your current home, the lock aisle can be overwhelming when it comes to finding the right deadbolt lock.

Whether you’re replacing locks on a new home or looking to add a little more security to your current home, the lock aisle can be overwhelming when it comes to finding the right deadbolt lock. With so many options available, it pays to understand the different functions in order to choose the right deadbolt. Check out our deadbolt lock breakdown below.
Deadbolt locks - Front door - Schlage

    Single Cylinder

This is the most common type of deadbolt used. Single cylinder deadbolts have an exterior keyhole which throws or retracts the deadbolt using a key on the outside. On the inside, you can lock and unlock the deadbolt with the thumbturn.

    SHOP SINGLE CYLINDER LOCKS

    Double cylinder

Double cylinder deadbolts are used when homeowners want a little extra security. They are often chosen for doors that feature windows and glass so the lock is not easily unlocked by a potential intruder. It features a keyhole on both the interior and exterior side of the door so the only way you can lock/unlock is with a mechanical key. However, this type of lock should be used with caution and is not recommended for any door that is used for egress in times of emergency.

    SHOP DOUBLE CYLINDER LOCKS

    Electronic locks

Electronic deadbolts often leverage the same security and durability of single cylinder deadbolts with the added convenience of a keypad or touchscreen. By programming a unique access code, electronic locks provide peace of mind so you never have to worry about losing a key again.

    SHOP ELECTRONIC LOCKS

    Smart locks

Like electronic locks, smart deadbolt locks are just as durable as a single cylinder deadbolt. You can connect your smart lock to a compatible smart home hub or sometimes directly to your phone for easy programming and access. Smart locks also provide the option to integrate your smart lock with other smart home products to create routines and schedules that fit your lifestyle. Arrive at the office and realize you forgot to lock the door? No problem. As long as you have a smart home hub or adapter, you can access your lock remotely to check its status and command it to lock or unlock.

    SHOP SMART LOCKS

Now that you know the different functions of the most popular deadbolt types, be sure to reference our door hardware shopper’s guide to help you complete your purchase for your front door. Smart Lock - Schlage Sense - Integrations

Did you know you can pair your Schlage Sense smart lock with additional accessories to get even more convenient features?

You may wonder how a residential door hardware company would ever think to begin using electronics in their products. We’d encourage you to check out our Company History page, but the bottom line is that Schlage offers electronic locks because they can add an array of conveniences to your day-to-day life.
Smart Lock - Schlage Sense - Integrations

Assign each of the kids their own unique access code so you can track when they get home. Set a schedule for the dog walker’s access code so they can only get in when you want them to. Customize settings like built-in alarm and auto-locking to add extra security – no more worrying about the kids forgetting to lock the door behind them. These are all standard features of our Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt, but did you know you can pair your Schlage Sense lock with additional accessories to get even more convenient features?

With all the new technology coming out from major companies like Google, Amazon and Apple, there are a lot of exciting smart home integrations happening with the deadbolt that allow you to customize your experience to your daily needs. We don’t all have kids, and we don’t all need a dog walker. The reason we offer integrations like these with our Schlage Sense lock is so we can offer features that can be customized to your specific lifestyle, whatever that looks like.

Navigating all the different options can be tricky. The technology involved isn’t really important…what’s important is how it can be useful to you. What other items in your home will it work with, and what are the possible benefits?

We’ve broken down for you below all the integration possibilities for the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt. You can navigate the headings below quickly by answering one simple question: does your household use iOS devices only, a mix of iOS and Android smartphones, or Android only?

    Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter

The Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter lets you lock and unlock your Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt from anywhere with your Android smartphone or your iPhone®. This means any time you can’t remember whether you locked the door behind you, or would like to let a friend in because you’re running late on the way home, you can use the app to check the lock status and lock and unlock with just a tap.

The adapter is easy to use and takes up minimal space – if you plug it into the bottom outlet, you’ll still have a plug available on top. Just plug the adapter in and use the Schlage Home app to pair it with your deadbolt and connect it to your home WiFi network for anywhere access. The adapter can support up to two Schlage Sense locks at a time, and does not work with Apple HomeKit or Siri voice control.

In order for anywhere access to stay connected, the Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter must stay plugged into power at home, connected to Wi-Fi and in Bluetooth® range (about 40 feet) from the lock.

    Amazon Alexa

If you pair your Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter with your Schlage Sense lock, you’ll be able to use hands-free voice control with Amazon Alexa-enabled devices like Amazon Echo and Dot. Learn more about Alexa features here.

    Google Assistant

Similar to Alexa, if you pair your Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter with your Schlage Sense lock, you’ll be able to use hands-free voice control with Google Assistant-enabled devices like Google Home. Learn more about Google Assistant features here.

Apple TV / HomePod / iPad

If you love Apple products and your entire household uses iPhone rather than Android, you can program your lock to work with Apple HomeKit. This option won’t allow for any Android compatibility, but it will allow you to pair your lock with other HomeKit-enabled devices to customize your Apple-centric smart home experience. You can also use the lock with the Home app that comes built into the latest iOS.

If you have an Apple TV or a HomePod, pairing with your Schlage Sense lock will allow you to connect to your lock from anywhere to make sure the door is locked or let a guest in while you’re running late. You can even use an iPad with the latest iOS as a smart home ‘hub’ that pairs with your lock to offer anywhere access, provided the iPad stays plugged in at home where it can connect to your lock through Bluetooth.

Two years ago, six home brands came together to show how the smallest details can work together to truly complete your space. Schlage®, Delta®, Formica®, Hunter®, JELD-WEN®, and KitchenAid® formed the ELEVATE Design Collective and set out on a mission to inspire and expand the possibilities of interior design. To show their products in action, they teamed up with interior designers Jennifer Wagner Schmidt and Mary Jo Peterson to complete a breathtaking New York City loft makeover. To celebrate the two-year anniversary of the unveiling, we’re catching up with Jennifer Wagner Schmidt of JWS Interiors to reflect on the impact the ELEVATE Design Collective has made in the world of interior design.

    Q&A with Jennifer Wagner Schmidt

Q: What have you been up to since we last worked together? Any fun projects you care to share?

    A. "So much has happened in 2 years! The Elevate project was such a great experience and project to work on with everyone. JWS Interiors garnered new clients as a result of the project, which has been great!

We recently completed a whole house project here in the DC area. A unique, modern take on farmhouse style, the Piet Boon designed home was one of my favorite projects to work on. JWS Interiors was tasked with the design of the entire home. We were thrilled when Elle Decor featured it as a whole house tour this past March."

Q: Looking back, how did the Elevate project change your view on door hardware? Have you found yourself recommending it to clients?

    A. "Working with Schlage was great for me a designer. I learned so much about hardware in general; the project also made me focus more attention on this important detail when designing!"

Q: Since Elevate, Schlage has launched the Schlage Custom Door Hardware line – what do you think? What is your favorite, style and finish?

    A. "This was a really smart idea-it allows the homeowner or designer to really tailor the hardware to the project/home. I'm always partial to clean, modern lines, so the Custom Latitude Lever with Upland Trim was a clear winner in my book! The Matte Black finish looks amazing!"

Q: What features of Custom do you see being most useful in consumers’ homes?

    A. "Anytime you have the option to customize your look--whether that relates to fabric, finishes, or in this case, the style of hardware & finish-- without spending a lot of money--is a win-win. The customer gets exactly what they want - no compromise when it comes to style or function."

Q: Lastly, a fun question, what Single Malt product did you secretly want to take home after the Elevate Design Collective loft unveil?

    A. "The Hunter Ceiling Fan was really different and modern. I loved the wire caged industrial feel!"

At Schlage, we’re not done impacting the world of interior design. Check out our latest stylish and innovative line of door hardware – Schlage Custom – and choose from a wide range of high-end designer styles and finishes.

    Mother's Day - Gift ideas - Schlage

This is the perfect year to pamper your mom to the max for Mother’s Day! We’ve curated a list of the most luxurious ways to avoid the old flowers-and-card standby and show proper appreciation for all Mom does – check it out below:
    Mother's Day - Gift ideas - Schlage

    Jewelry for her home

Treat her to an interior design upgrade – if you choose door hardware as your focus, it won’t be as expensive or time-consuming as it sounds. Next time she’s out of the house for a few hours, consider updating door hardware and hinges to coordinate finishes between other interior accents like kitchen plumbing and cabinet hardware – it only takes a few minutes with a screwdriver to replace a door knob or lever. Step up to premium door hardware (like Schlage Custom locks) and add a fresh coat of paint for a door makeover that will bring every room in the home to life. You can even add an electronic lock to the front or garage door, allowing her to track when the kids come and go and even ‘accidentally’ delete the in-laws’ access codes when she needs some quiet time.

    Get personalized

Jewelry and perfume are fairly traditional gifts, but these days it’s easy to add a much more personalized touch. Whether it’s a necklace with an engraved pendant or an artisanal scent customized to her unique body chemistry, look for a gift that no one else can have. If a special perfume sounds perfect for her, you can get some city-based recommendations here – we love New Orleans’ Bourbon French Perfumes because they do a body chemistry analysis, but there are options on both coasts and in the Midwest.

    Classic luxury

Is there anything softer or more luxurious than silk? Think pillowcases, robes, slippers, eye masks – you can even find silk-infused shampoo, conditioner and body lotion for the ultimate in softness.

    A relaxing bath kit

This time, skip the quick and convenient supermarket buy and put a little more time into crafting your own version. Keeping in mind her favorite scents and flavors, put together a bathtub relaxation kit: a bathtub caddy to keep items dry, a well-made journal where she can record her thoughts and reminisce over memories, a good bottle of wine, a yummy scented candle, and a skin-softening bath bomb.

    Peaceful getaways

Take the bath kit a step further and let the professionals handle it – send Mom on a spa getaway! For the ultimate in luxury, a trip to Amangiri is one she’ll never forget – it was recently featured in a Forbes’ Top 10 luxury gift list as one of the most private and peaceful locations in the world. If she’s the more active type, send her on an adventure tour for a taste of the traveling life – there are lots of options available, ranging from wine tours to wildlife viewings and meditation retreats.

How are you showering your mom for Mother’s Day? We’d love to hear your gift ideas over on Twitter or Facebook.

Smart home tech - Real Estate - Schlage

Adding even a few smart home products is the single easiest way to boost your home’s value. Here's what you need to know before you buy or sell a home with smart home tech.

As home automation technologies become even smarter and more popular, their impact on home purchases has become even more evident. Adding even a few smart home products is the single easiest way to boost your home’s value, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and their 2018 Home Buyer And Generational Trend Report. It can increase your home’s value as much as 5%, the Consumer Electronics Association and the National Association of Home Builders found. And that’s just the beginning.
Smart home tech - Real estate - Schlage

    Smart is in

Smart home technologies are becoming more mainstream by the day. In fact, nearly 45% of all home owners expect to either buy or invest in smart home technology. And more than half of prospective home sellers said they were planning to purchase home automation products specifically to sell their homes faster and for more money.

Smart home tech - Millennial - Schlage

    Do the math

Three out of four millennial homeowners said they’d be happy to pay between $1,500 and $4,000 to make their homes smarter. A $4,000 investment could increase your home’s asking price by 5% – not to mention turning your house into a smart home. And there are so many connected technologies you can employ that cost much less.

The smart lock: A smart, affordable solution

The NAR trend report revealed that home security was either somewhat or very important to more than 85% of those surveyed. It’s no wonder smart locks are the number one purchase consideration, followed by automated lighting and smart thermostats. Smart locks make your home attractive to prospective buyers, and they also provide peace of mind as realtors and others are going in and out of your home.

    Smart security at work

Installing a smart lock on your front door is a simple and affordable first step toward making your home “smart.” Now, instead of leaving your door unlocked or hiding a key under a planter or in a fake rock, you can install a smart lock to keep your house secure. You can even use your smart phone to allow convenient access to those you trust. The Schlage Sense app allows you to program new access codes into the lock, even setting schedules for when those codes can be used. And because you’re notified when codes are used, you can keep a better eye on who is in your house and when they were there.

The best is yet to come

With millennial home buyers now representing the largest potential audience – with two-thirds of them being new home buyers – you can’t ignore the attraction of smart home technologies in appealing to this significant market. In total, the smart home market is expected to reach close to $120 billion by 2020. As this wave crests, it’s sure to continue to sweep through the real estate industry, impacting home prices and influencing home buyers.

    Schlage smart locks

When it comes to choosing the smartest smart lock, you can count on Schlage. One of the drawbacks of early electronic locks was that they were bulky and not particularly stylish. Schlage smart locks prove that strength, smarts and style are no longer mutually exclusive. In fact, the premium style of Schlage smart locks will actually add curb appeal to your home. They are also easy to install, requiring just a screwdriver and a little free time to get the job done.

Smart home tech - Resale value - Schlage
Schlage offers a variety of smart locks from which to choose. The Schlage Connect™ Touchscreen Deadbolt is designed to work with popular home automation hubs. Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt allows easier home access using your smartphone. These are all reflective of a heritage of style and innovation that traces back to 1909 when company founder Walter Schlage first patented a door lock that also turned on a home’s lights! Talk about innovation. Talk about smart!
Is your home ready to sell? Have you thought about increasing the value of your new home by adding the latest smart home technologies? Amazon Alexa - Unlock feature - Schlage Smart Locks

Schlage smart locks offer superior convenience at your fingertips. And with Amazon Alexa, you don’t even need your hands for some of the best features.

Schlage smart locks offer superior convenience at your fingertips. And with Amazon Alexa, you don’t even need your hands for some of the best features. Amazon Alexa users can enable voice unlocking functionality for their Schlage smart locks, an enhancement to the locks’ original features, which include verbally locking or checking the status of your door via Alexa-enabled devices.

At the time of the initial integration between Schlage smart locks and Amazon Alexa, voice unlocking was not available. However, because technology improvements now allow Alexa to authenticate the user’s identity prior to unlocking the door, you can enjoy the feature’s additional convenience and still know you’re getting the superior security you expect from Schlage. Here’s what you need to get started.

Amazon Alexa - Unlock - Schlage Smart Locks

    1. Which Schlage smart locks are compatible with Amazon Alexa?

All of Schlage’s smart locks are compatible with Amazon Alexa. In most cases, you will need to connect the devices via an adapter or smart home hub. Only the Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt, with its built-in WiFi, does not require additional hubs or accessories.

    • Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt: Schlage Sense™ WiFi Adapter (sold separately)

    • Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt, Z-Wave Plus: Samsung Smart Things, Wink, Ring Alarm

    • Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt, Zigbee: Samsung SmartThings, Key by Amazon + Cloud Cam, Amazon Echo Plus

    • Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt: No hub required

    2. How does the new voice unlock feature for Amazon Alexa work?

The unlocking feature is disabled by default for your security. Log in to the Amazon Alexa app and enter your password to enable this feature. Then you will be required to set a four-digit PIN, which must be spoken before Alexa will unlock the door. When you say, “Alexa, unlock the front door,” Alexa will ask for the PIN. If the PIN is correct, Alexa will unlock the door. After three attempts to unlock the door with an incorrect PIN, Alexa will disable the unlocking feature and the door will remain locked. You can re-enable the feature by logging into the Amazon Alexa app and repeating the process.

Learn what else you can do with Amazon Alexa when you pair it with the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt or Schlage Connect Smart Deadbolt.

    3. What should I do if my spoken PIN is compromised?

Log in to the Amazon Alexa app to change your PIN as needed. We recommend changing your PIN at regular intervals just as you would a computer password.

    4. Can the unlock feature be used with Amazon Alexa smart home routines?

Currently, there is no plan to support routines for operations that affect the security of your home (unlock, disarm, open.) However, locking the door can be included in routines.

    7. In which countries will the Amazon Alexa voice unlock feature be enabled?

This functionality is currently available in the United States only.

Ted talks front porches: how history and style repeat themselves

A passionate architectural historian, Ted talks about the evolution of the front porch in America, its up and down history and its recent renaissance.

Ted Talks - Front Porches - Schlage

Last April, we explored some budget-friendly tips for getting your front porch in tip-top shape each Spring. Creating first impressions. Making your porch a living space. Simply dressing up your front door. There’s no end to the simple, affordable and stylish ways to welcome the season–and the world–to your home.

Where did it all begin? And what can we look forward to as front porches make a major comeback as both a functional and fashionable statement?

For some insight, we turned to Ted Roberts, the Style and Design Chief at Allegion. A passionate architectural historian, Ted talks about the evolution of the front porch in America, its up and down history and its recent renaissance. He also shares his vision for the future of front porches and their role in creating a sense of community.

Ted Talks - Front Porches - Outdoor Living - Schlage

    Q&A with Ted Roberts

Q: What can you tell us about the historical significance of the front porch?

    A. “Homes, throughout history, have always reflected our cultural and practical needs. In colonial times, there weren’t many porches. It wasn’t until after The Revolutionary War that they began to appear in the South, driven by the need to escape the heat. The porch served a function. It was a comfortable part of the house because of its cooling breezes and protection from the sun. But it was also a meeting place, a comfortable place to socialize. And the nation was growing.”

Q: That was the beginning, what happened next?

    A. “Over time, the porch evolved, getting more expansive and becoming an even more functional meeting space. This continued into the 1920s. As our cities and towns grew, porches became a social phenomenon because homes were being constructed so close together.”

Q: And then the popularity started to decline?

    A. “Yes. The 1920s into the 30s saw a drop-off, mostly due to new technologies. With the automobile, people simply weren’t at home as much. Also, the dirt and noise from the roads made porches less inviting. On into the 1950s, you had the advent of radio and TV which tended to keep people in the house. And then came air conditioning! Now you didn’t even have to go outside to catch a cool breeze.”

Q: When did the front porch start to make a comeback?

    A. “While there was a slight comeback in front porches for a time between 1970 and about 2000, we saw many home designs dominated by garage doors. Technology had again forced a design shift that put the front porch on the back burner and two-car garages at the forefront.

Two things are leading today’s comeback. We’re becoming more social, number one. And number two: home delivery. We once had the milkman making deliveries, but that faded as communities grew and small local grocers became big chain supermarkets. Now it has come full circle with technology allowing for everything from meal services to package deliveries. The result: a functional need to have a protected place for such things. This simple need has contributed to the morphing of the front porch into a useful and social showplace for the home.

Q: Where is the porch going?

    A. “Based on what we’re seeing, it’s not going anywhere. The porch has become a unique space and a showcase for one’s fashion sense and is important to the curb appeal of a home. While it’s not your living room, people are bringing the same design sense to the space. Plants, furniture, ceiling fans, outdoor televisions, the traditional porch swing, occasional tables, built-ins – these are all now part of the front porch landscape. And will continue to be.”

Ted Talks - Front Porches - Schlage

Q: How has this impacted the front door, itself?

    A. “Your front door is not just for wreaths anymore. It’s a space where you can make a statement. A reflection on “who owns this house.” You can dress up your door with things like pictures frames and family crests. You can refinish an old door or transform it entirely with large-pane glass or fancy cut glass with black muntin separating the panes – a huge trend right now.

“Perhaps the easiest and most cost-efficient way to update your look is with new door hardware. And with so many styles available, you can complement everything from traditional to farmhouse to modern decor. Your front door can set the tone of your home, whatever your style. Quickly. Easily. Affordably.”

Ted Talks - Front Door - Schlage

Q: What does this mean for Schlage?

    A. “We’ve built our business by keeping pace with the needs of our homeowners. For instance, as front doors have become larger, we’ve included an assortment of oversized handlesets in our Schlage Custom™ Door Hardware line that will come out later this year. We also offer a broad assortment of knobs, levers and electronic locks that can be paired with a range of Schlage products depending on the style or door application.”

The front porch is back, big time, and Schlage continues to be bring innovation and style to this important space, just as it has for more than 95 years. For more on how Schlage can open up a world of possibilities for your front porch, visit Schlage.com.

Schlage History - Walter Schlage - Founder

Ted reflects upon the many technological and stylistic advancements that have made Schlage what it is today – and the man who started it all.

    Ted Roberts - Schlage History

Schlage didn’t invent the lock. But founder, innovator and visionary Walter Schlage certainly perfected it in ways no one could have imagined when he founded the company in 1920. From his first patent in 1909 – a door lock that could also turn the lights on and off – through the decades of innovation that followed, Schlage literally reinvented the door lock as well as the category of door hardware.

One of the first things a visitor notices when entering parent-company Allegion’s headquarters is a wall with 826 patent certificates proudly displayed. It stands as a testament to the lasting commitment to problem solving, customer security and satisfaction, and a spirit of innovation that has stood the test of time.

Who better than Ted Roberts, Allegion’s Style and Design Chief, to speak to this spirit? Ted reflects upon the many technological and stylistic advancements that have made Schlage what it is today – and the man who started it all.

    Q&A with Ted Roberts

    Q. Where did Schlage begin and where is the company now?

    A. “The company has been around for a long time and has quite the history. It all started with Walter Schlage, an immigrant lock maker, who brought some very original ideas with him to America which then became patents and the foundation of Schlage. Dynamic, interesting and creative, Walter was what you’d call a “tinkerer.” His very simple goal, when you boil it all down, was to solve problems.

“That’s really our goal today. Whether we’re talking engineering challenges, keeping up with the latest style trends or making our door hardware easy to install and use, everything we do is designed to afford our homeowners the best possible experience. It’s no surprise, with this kind of heritage, that people expect a lot from us. We want to exceed those expectations.”

Ted Talks - Walter Schlage - Schlage History

    Q. Where do you see things going?

    A. “I don’t see our mission changing in the future, this perfect harmony of style and function. I see us continuing the melding of aesthetics, innovative product features, reliability and performance that continues to delight our customers. We have some big shoes to fill. We take that responsibility – to our heritage and to our customers – very seriously.”

    Q. What are some of the specific innovations Walter – and Schlage – are known for?

    A. “With over 800 North American patents alone, there are a lot of them. Walter was really the grandfather of the smart lock. His first patent was for a lock that turned on your house lights when you entered. It’s so ironic how that very first innovation was the precursor to the entire generation of smart locks we’re introducing as we speak.

“Another that’s relevant today is Walter’s process of attaching glass to metal to create a glass door knob. They’re popular again today and are prominently featured in some of our newest collections. Taking something old and making it new again while remaining faithful to its origins – that’s a great example of true timelessness. And that goes for the products we make as well as our company as a whole.”

“Walter also improved the cylindrical lock by adding his push-button innovation. which is still in use today. Again, we started with Walter’s desire to make life easier for people and that continues today with the products we make.”

Ted Talks - Walter Schlage - Smart Lock

    Q. What has changed the most with the company over the years?

    A. “In a word, scope. The more we’ve looked at keeping the promises we’ve made to our homeowners over the years, the more new designs, styles, products and technologies have been explored.

“We’ve grown so much as a company and as innovators. Mechanical and electronic locks. Exit devices. Card readers. Biometric interfaces. Door hardware. I don’t even think Walter Schlage could have envisioned what his homegrown company would one day become.”

    Q. What do you think Walter Schlage would say if he saw you now?

    A. “On one hand, I imagine he would be in awe of the size of the company, today’s technology and, like I said, the sheer scope of the products the brands create. I also think he would still want to tinker with everything – see what’s going on inside and what makes today’s products tick.

“But he’d find a lot of familiar ground too, just in the way we approach our jobs and our commitment to security, safety and product performance. He’d also recognize in us a certain familiar entrepreneurial spirit and our company-wide desire to always look for and achieve the next best thing.”

    Q. In your role as Style and Design Chief, how does this sense of history impact you, personally, in your day-to-day duties?

    A. “I think I can speak for all of us when I say we feel like torch-bearers in a sense. Technologies change. Needs change. Styles certainly change–and then change back. We have to be in tune with that, just as Walter was in assessing his own customers’ needs way back when.

    Ted Talks - Schlage History

“As a designer following in his footsteps, I’m constantly aware that design is more than appearance – it’s a harmony of function as well as style, with each enhancing the other. Walter’s example guides us, as a company, to continue to look at what we do, holistically focusing on our customer and his or her positive experience with our products.

“For me, personally, I want us to continue our mission of keeping people safe and secure where they live, work and visit. We’re designing products that people rely on, so we need to get it right. If Walter saw us today, I would want him to recognize and appreciate that and feel as much pride as we do in making it happen. And, maybe a little selfishly, I’d like him to be impressed with our passion for design.”

From humble beginnings and the singular vision of a “tinkerer” to a global company and brand, Schlage has been and continues to be a testament to innovation and style. For more on how Schlage’s century-old heritage contributes to opening up a world of possibilities, visit Schlage.com.

    Door hardware - Schlage
When you need a new door lever or door knob, you’ll find that there are a lot of options to choose from. There are keyed entry locks for exterior doors, locking, non-locking, and non-turning interior knobs and levers, not to mention deadbolts and handlesets. Take into consideration the multiple styles and finishes available, and it may be difficult to know where to start.

    Let Schlage be your guide

First, check out our door hardware shopper’s guide. The shopper’s guide breaks the options down into simplest terms, giving you the inside scoop on important door hardware lingo and making it easy to figure out exactly what you need.

But beyond just features and functions, how do you know that you’re making a smart door hardware purchase? How do you find solutions that are simple and offer long term value? It’s tempting to grab the cheapest lock in the aisle that sort of looks like what you used to have, but the truth is that door hardware for the home is a little bit like accessorizing your outfit. Just like a pair of shiny new shoes or your favorite necklace, door hardware can be the perfect detail that elevates everything around it to the next level. In other words, it’s worth putting time into – but not too much time.

    Keep it simple

Which brings us to our most sound advice: look for brands that offer simplicity. Door hardware is usually categorized into a variety of functions depending on which door in the house it will go on. Schlage Custom Combined Interior Door Hardware makes things a little easier by allowing you to switch between two settings: locking and non-locking. The locking option is perfect for bedroom and bathroom doors where you may like some privacy, while the non-locking option is ideal for hallway and closet doors.

Most interior doors fall into these two categories, so instead of tallying up how many of each you need, you can get a Schlage Custom Combined Interior lock that will work with both. Plus, it only takes a few minutes to install and all you’ll need at home is a screwdriver. You can’t get easier than that.

    Consider the benefits

Two functions in one lock also offers long term benefits. If you have young children in the home, you may opt for the non-locking function for safety. Later in life, as your family moves up and out, you may want to turn that bedroom into a home office with a lock on the door. Whatever life sends your way, a Schlage Custom Combined Interior lock can adapt to fit your evolving needs year after year.

So next time you want to give your home a style lift without investing a lot of time and money, consider how easy it would be to add new knobs or levers. With the premium style and design of Schlage Custom door hardware, as well as the innovative Combined Interior function, you’ll be getting the most bang for your buck!

Dogs bring a lot of joy into our lives. They also bring a lot of work.

Thanks to Schlage, you can say goodbye to getting up in the middle of the night to let Spike out. Forget the dread of whether you let Spot in out of the rain. Forever retire the leash and give your furry friends the freedom they deserve.

Introducing the Schlage Pet Sense Smart Dog Door. This revolutionary smart dog product features a paw pad touch screen and is perfect for all dog lovers out there. This dog-first design has left the Corg-Keys behind and dog independence is no longer a far-fetched idea.

Never worry again about making your dog wait to go to the bathroom. Delete your dog-walker’s code, Fido can now walk himself. After hours of Lab testing, the first-ever smart lock for dogs encourages a whole species to retrieve their long-forgotten independence.

Just like the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt, the smart lock for dogs works with the Sense app so you can see when your dog uses the door. You can also set hours for the deadbolt, so your dog can’t get outside just as the mailman is walking up.

Because the lock is specifically for dogs, you don’t have to worry about anyone being able to break in to your house or your teenagers trying to sneak out as it only works with dog paws.

Coming soon: Schlage Pet Sense for Cats (We just haven’t figured out how to convince the cats to not lock out the humans. Pre-order right meow.)

    Happy April Fool's Day! :)

Simply insert the locking pin on the interior side of the lock to enable locking for bedrooms and bathrooms.

Installation is easy and Schlage Custom hardware is guaranteed to fit on standard doors. You'll only need two tools to complete the job - a tape measure and a screwdriver. Before we get started, be sure your door is properly drilled and aligned with this door prep checklist.

    Door hardware parts checklist

Once you've gathered your tools, you're ready to get started installing your Schlage Custom lock. The first step you want to take is to ensure you have all parts and pieces you will need. Here's a checklist to help you be sure:
Door hardware - Installation - Schlage Custom
Allen wrench: You will use this to tighten the knob or lever.
Latch: A spring operated bolt with a beveled face to permit a latching action when the door closes.
Round corner faceplate: This is the decorative faceplate attached to the latch.
Backplate: The backplate is used to secure the round corner faceplate to the latch.
Drive-in faceplate: This is an optional faceplate that may replace the round corner faceplate if your door calls for it.
Strike: The strike plate is the metal plate that will be affixed to the door frame. The strike is used to increase security by holding the latch in place.
Latch/strike screws: These will be used to secure the latch and strike with the door.
Chassis screws: These will be used to secure the interior chassis to the exterior chassis.
Interior chassis: This chassis will be installed on the interior side of the door and will be secured in to place with the chassis screws.
Exterior chassis: The chassis with two posts and a privacy pin hole.
Trim: A circular or decorative trim plate attached to the door under the knob or lever.
     Door knobs or levers
Privacy pin: You will need this tool to change the function of your lock from locking to non-locking.

Emergency unlock tool: This tool can be used if your lock is set to privacy and is ever accidentally locked. Be sure to keep this tool some place handy.

    Installation instructions

1You'll begin by first installing the strike. Secure the strike to the door frame using the two short screws.

Door hardware - Installation - Schlage Custom

2If your door has a backset of 2 3/8", you will not need to make any further adjustments. If your backset measures 2 3/4", the latch is easily adjusted to make it longer by turning the bottom half and extending it out.
Door hardware - Installation - Schlage Custom

3Next, you'll need to determine if you'll be using the round corner faceplate or the drive-in faceplate.
Door hardware - Installation - Schlage Custom

If using the round corner faceplate, put the silver backplate on the latch so the tabs on the latch are aligned with the notches on the backplate. Install the decorative, round corner faceplate over the silver backplate.
Door hardware - Installation - Schlage Custom

If you need to use the drive-in faceplate, you'll need to add a hammer and block of wood to your tool set. Simply install the drive-in faceplate over the latch until you hear it snap.
Door hardware - Installation - Schlage Custom

4If you're using the round corner faceplate, be sure that the angled beveled side is facing the door frame and slide the latch into place and secure with the two remaining short screws.

Door hardware - Installation - Schlage Custom

For the drive-in faceplate, slide into place and gently tap in to place flush with the door edge using a block of wood to protect the latch.
Schlage Custom - Door knob and lever - Installation

5Now that the latch is installed, it's time to put the chassis in place. With the privacy pin hole at the bottom, put the exterior chassis into the hole of the door while aligning the chassis posts with the holes in the latch.
Schlage Custom - Door knob and lever - Installation

6Place the interior chassis on the other side of the door and secure with the long chassis screws, being careful not to overtighten them.

Schlage Custom - Door knob and lever - Installation

7Now you are ready to install the trim. Notice the small indents on the chassis that lign up with indents on the interior side of the trim.
Schlage Custom - Door knob and lever - Installation

Make sure the privacy pin hole on the trim also lines up with the privacy pin hole on the chassis.
Schlage Custom - Door hardware - Installation

Line the trim hooks up and slide and click in to place. Repeat on the other side of the door.
Schlage Custom - Door hardware - Installation

8If you want to be able to lock the door, you'll want to use the privacy function. Insert the privacy pin on the pin hole on the interior side. Make sure the wings are horizontal then push until you hear a click.
Schlage Custom - Door hardware - Installation

Rotate the privacy pin one quarter turn to the right, then push it to engage the lock.
Schlage Custom - Door hardware - Installation

9Now it's time to attach the knobs or levers. Levers should face away from the door frame. If your lever is pointing the wrong way, watch this video on changing the handing here. Push your knob or lever into place with the correct orientation then tighten with the allen wrench.
Schlage Custom - Door hardware - Installation

    Testing the lock

Now that the installation is complete, it's important to test the lock to make sure everything is in proper, working order.
1If you chose to use the privacy pin, push the pin to lock the door.
Schlage Custom - Door hardware - Installation

2To disengage the lock, simply turn the lever on the interior side to unlock.

Your installation is now complete. You can also reference the printed installation instructions here or the video here. For more installation tips and product resources, check out our Schlage Custom FAQ page.

Life is ever changing. At Schlage, we appreciate that every room has a life of its own, evolving over time to reflect your unique preferences. That’s why we set out to create a door hardware solution that would support your needs and adapt to the changing life of any room.

Designed as a flexible system, Schlage Custom hardware provides customers with a customizable lock solution. With the 2:1 functionality, you can change a non-locking door to lockable - without having to remove the inner core of the lock. This means you can switch the functionality of your door hardware without buying a new lock. Simply insert or remove the pin tool provided with the lock to change from one function to another.

Below are five life moments you likely haven’t considered yet that makes Schlage Custom Door Hardware the perfect choice for families.

    First-time parents

Congratulations! You just found out you’re expecting. Once that nesting phase hits, do you know where your child will be sleeping? It may be time to change that office or guest bedroom to a nursery. That might mean you’ll want a non-locking function on the nursery door to ensure you can always get to the baby quickly, and easily.

    Families with toddlers

Once your child becomes mobile, consider the doors that may lead to dangerous areas they should be kept away from. Think, basement stairs and rooms that have not been baby-proofed like a home office, hobby room or even a closet storing items that are not safe for a baby or toddler to play with. Easily change your door knob or lever to a locking function without ever removing the hardware from the door.

    Families with young kids

So what if your child accidentally locks herself in a room? There’s no need to break the knob – or door. All Schlage Custom locks come with an emergency unlock tool so you can quickly and easily free your child from accidental captivity. You may even want to consider switching a child-proof room, like their bedroom or playroom, from locking to non-locking (Hall & Closet function).

    Families with teenagers

As your child grows and gains some independence, easily switch their hardware from non-locking to locking to grant a little more privacy. You may even want to add a little extra security to other areas of the home, like your closet if your kids are prone to stealing your clothes.

    Empty-nesters

And just like that, you blink and your kids are all grown up, living in homes of their own. You may decide to change their old bedrooms into something with more utility for your stage of life. Perhaps a hobby room or guest bedroom.

No matter where life takes you or your family, you can count on the quality and flexibility of Schlage Custom Door Hardware to support your needs along the way. Visit Schlage.com/custom to browse the multiple styles and finishes.

Adding a device like Amazon Alexa is a popular way to incorporate smart home technology into your life. But getting the most out of this technology can seem overwhelming. We are here to help with simple tips and innovative products like the Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt.

    1. The Internet of Things

With more than 25,000 skills just a shout away, Alexa is always ready to help. From playing your favorite music, to ordering your favorite products from Amazon, families are welcoming Alexa into their homes in record numbers. But did you know you can also request a ride to the airport by connecting to your Uber account? Or control your thermostat and lighting? Just don’t tell Alexa to laugh. More products and services are connecting each day, but the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt is still our favorite.

    2. Secure Connections

To utilize your Alexa-powered device to lock your door, you will need the Schlage Sense™ Wi-Fi Adapter in addition to your Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt. The adapter also allows you to control your lock from your smartphone when you’re away from home. The Schlage Sense app simplifies the process of connecting your phone to the Wi-Fi adapter and lock, utilizing industry-leading security to protect communication between your Apple or Android smartphone and your lock.

    3. Which Alexa-powered device is right for you?

It really depends on your specific needs. There are a variety of Echo devices available, and all of them are compatible with the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt. The second-generation Amazon Echo is ideal for most homes. The Echo Dot is designed to connect to a home audio system. The Echo Tap lets you make Alexa portable. And the latest options like the Echo Show, Echo Spot and Echo Look are video enabled. Choose the options that work for you and your smart home needs.

    4. Peace of mind

Worried about how someone might use Alexa to gain access to your home? Rest easy. At Schlage, we understand that the digital age brings new security concerns, which is why, at this this point in time, we only allow Alexa to lock your door and check the status of your lock. Only an authorized user can use the Schlage Sense app to unlock the door for visitors.

*Update May 9, 2018: Schlage announces new Amazon Alexa voice unlocking capabilities. Get the details here.

    5. Seamless style

Like the Amazon Echo, the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt is offered in a variety of styles and finishes to complement any décor. Never skimp on these 7 home products

While there are many low-cost alternatives for most household items, there are some key items that you should never penny-pinch on.

    Home products - Schlage
Everyone wants to save money when it comes to purchases for their home. After all, there is so much that goes into a home and the costs can start to get a little overwhelming. While there are many low-cost alternatives for most household items, there are some key items that you should never penny-pinch on. Here is a list of items that are worth the extra investment.
    Home Products - Kitchenware

Kitchenware (knives and pots and pans)

Knives, pots and pans are items you likely use every day. These are products that need to stand up to daily wear and tear. By spending more money on them up front, you will save yourself time and money in the long run. It’s also much safer to work with sharp knives, as they are more likely to cut your food instead of your fingers.
    Home products - Mattress

    Mattress

Your bed is another item that gets daily use. And it has a major impact on your quality of life. If you wake up each day with a sore back, your whole day is thrown off. And while a good mattress can be expensive, it’s also going to last you for years. Do your research and find the best option for your home. Saving a little money isn’t worth years of restless sleep and back issues.
    Home products - Large appliances

    Large appliances

Similar to your mattress, large appliances like refrigerators and washing machines are going to last you for years, so it isn’t an item that you want to skimp on and later regret. Newer appliances are typically more energy efficient than older models, so some of the initial cost will be offset each month by lower utility bills.
    Home products - Paint

    Paint

Painting is a quick and easy way to change up the look of a room, but making changes to your house can get very expensive, pretty quickly. It’s easy to look for the cheapest gallon of paint you can find. But that’s not going to save you money in the long term. Better paints have fewer solvents than low-quality paints, so it takes fewer coats to cover old paint. And the color tends to be richer and truer when you opt for higher quality.
Home products - Latitude lever - Schlage Custom

    High-traffic furniture

While every family has different needs, there are some pieces of furniture that are subject to a lot of wear and tear. In most cases, your couch and kitchen table need to stand up to daily use. Invest in sturdier pieces that are designed to last. Two cheap couches are usually more expensive than one that’s well made. So save money in the long run and go for a quality product.
    Home Products - Vacuum

    Vacuum

If you’re putting a lot of thought and work into your home, you want to be able to keep it looking nice. If you have kids or pets, you are definitely going to be cleaning up messes on a regular basis, so you want a vacuum that is up to the task. While smart vacuums may be more expensive, they save you a lot of time and the technology has come a long way. In addition to Roomba’s Traditional line of smart vacuums, they now offer wet-mop options. Investing in a quality vacuum is also an important consideration if anyone in your family has allergies. Lower-end vacuums often emit more dust and allergens than the high-end options.
Home security - Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt

    Home security

Your home is your sanctuary. Give your entire family the peace of mind that comes with a home security system. There are a lot of options available, so choose the right system for your area.

The foundation of any secure home is the lock on your front door. Schlage offers a wide variety of stylish door hardware with the highest safety ratings available. The Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt offers additional features like a built-in alarm that goes off if someone attempts to tamper or force the lock. The integrated touchscreen also eliminates the need to hide a key under the welcome mat.

The mark of a true innovator is solving problems before you even know you have them. This is certainly the case when it comes to creating perfect door hardware for your home. There are so many factors to consider – from how a door functions to how it looks to how easy it is to install to what it costs. At Schlage, we continue to develop innovative products that eliminate problems and add simplicity, safety and style to your home.

    1. We have to hand it to you

Is your door right handed or left handed? That’s something many people don’t think about when they’re shopping for door hardware. With a left-handed door, from the outside the door hinges are on your left. With a right-handed door, they’re on your right. Schlage Custom Door Hardware makes shopping easy. You don’t need to choose a left or right-handed lock ahead of time because the core can be customized to work either way.

    2. It’s your turn

It’s a good idea going in to decide if you prefer knobs or levers for your door hardware. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the number of options available once you get to the home-improvement store. Schlage Custom Door Hardware offers 12 knob and lever designs from which to choose. So what impression are you looking to make? What rooms will they open? Think function as well as fashion.

    3. You’ve got the look

Whether shopping online or visiting your local home improvement retailer, Schlage Custom Door Hardware makes it easier to find the perfect look. From Traditional and Transitional to Contemporary, we offer trim options with subtle, yet unique details meant to make a lasting impression. Hidden screws. Low-profile designs. It’s the little things that make a big difference and add value.

    4. From start to finish

It’s exciting to have a wide selection of design options available to you. Do you prefer the understated style of Satin Brass? The timelessness and flexibility of Satin Nickel? The rustic character of Aged Bronze? The contemporary elegance of Matte Black? Schlage Custom Door Hardware is available in a range of customizable options to suit.

    5. To lock or not to lock?

That is the question. Are you looking for a non-locking interior door for a hallway or closet? Or do you want an added measure of privacy and security for a locking bedroom, bathroom or home office? With Schlage Custom Door Hardware you don’t have to choose one or the other. The innovative system includes a locking pin that easily allows you to switch back and forth. One system. Endless possibilities.

Be in the know. Change your mind–and pretty much anything else your heart desires–without having to change your lock. For more information, visit schlage.com/custom.

5 steps to a style update: Schlage interior door hardware installation

You might be surprised by how easy it actually is to install new levers or knobs. For most, installation requires no more than 5 minutes.

Door hardware - Installation - Schlage

You’ve probably heard us say it before, and we’ll say it again: a door hardware upgrade is one of the simplest and most affordable ways to add an instant style lift to your home’s interior.

It’s true, those of us at Schlage are total door hardware nerds – we love switching up styles and playing with finishes, so of course we think new hardware is a great idea! But you might be surprised by how easy it actually is to install new levers or knobs. All of our hardware is guaranteed to fit on standard door preps, so for most, it’s a 5-minute job that requires nothing more than a screwdriver.

Take a look below at a step-by-step breakdown of the installation process to see just how easy the steps are.

    Schlage door lock installation

1 As mentioned above, Schlage door hardware is guaranteed to fit on standard door preps. If you’re unsure whether your door is prepped correctly, double check these measurements:
Door hardware - Installation - Door prep - Schlage
If your measurements are different, you can call customer service at 888-805-9837. You may be able to get a different install kit for your non-standard door.
Most doors won’t require any adjustments to the latch, however, you are given some extra options, just in case. If your door doesn’t have a rectangular cut-out around the latch hole, you’ll want to use the round drive-in faceplate. You can use a flathead screwdriver to pop the rectangular faceplate off, then attach the round drive-in faceplate by sliding it over the top of the bolt and snapping it into place.
Door hardware - Installation - Schlage
3Installing the latch is easy; for the standard rectangular faceplate, simply slide the latch into the hole until the faceplate is flush with the door, and secure it to the door with the two included screws. Make sure the beveled side of the bolt is facing the door jamb. The round drive-in faceplate is even easier: slide the latch into the hole, then cover the bolt with a block of wood to protect it from damage and use a hammer to gently tap it into place.
Door hardware - Installation - Schlage
4Now you’re ready to add your knob or lever. The posts attached to the levers will slide through the latch, then you can secure them in place with the two screws. The final step is to attach the strike plate to the door jamb with the screws provided.
Door hardware - Installation - Schlage
5Once you’ve gotten your new hardware on the door, you may find that your lever looks funny because it’s upside down. Don’t worry, this is easy to fix! Use the small pin included in the box to remove each lever. Switch each lever to the other side of the door so that the curved tip points downward, and snap it back into place.
Door hardware - Installation - Schlage
As you can see, in just a few easy steps you can change the style and finish of your hardware and give any room in your home an aesthetic lift! As always, let us know if you have questions by reaching out on Twitter or Facebook.

Once the hustle of the holiday season ends and winter drags on, it's easy to find yourself in a home decor rut. Don't let the frigid temps or gloomy weather keep you from adding a little cheer and personality to your home. Here are three simple details that are easy to complete and will make your home a winter retreat you won't mind being trapped in a little while longer.
Winter home decor - Glass door knobs - Schlage

    1. Install glamorous lighting

The days may be short but that shouldn't stop you from bringing a little brightness indoors. Consider changing any overhead lighting that may be dull and inadequate for a statement piece that will instantly brighten your home - and maybe even your mood! Installing a pendant or chandelier is an easy project any skill level can take on but be sure to follow all the manufacturer's warnings and instructions. If you're wiring brand new lighting for the first time, it may be best to seek out a professional first.

    2. Swap boring, outdated hardware for glass door knobs

It's no secret that we find upgrading your door hardware to be an easy way to complete the design of your home. We're loving the thought of adding some glass door knobs - like our new Alexandria or Hobson knobs - to add a bit of sparkle and shine to a season that is often overtaken by gloom. If glass door knobs are not your style, simply choosing a finish that better reflects your home's decor can be the perfect upgrade you're looking for. Let our style selector tool help you find your perfect match.

    3. Don't be afraid to mix a few finishes

Upgrading your lighting or door hardware doesn't have to result in a domino effect of changing all hardware to a matching finish. Embrace mixed finishes and add a little drama or interest to your decor. Here are our tried and true tips for mixing hardware finishes flawlessly. If you're feeling extra bold and unconventional, you can even mix finishes among your door hardware. Honeybear Lane proves that it's perfectly fine to create your own rules and choose designs that add a little more character than you had before.

Looking to make your home feel cozy? The Farmhouse style is becoming increasingly popular because of its warmth and comfort. Don't live anywhere near a farm? No worries! It only takes a few style updates to achieve the Farmhouse look.

    WHAT IS FARMHOUSE STYLE?

As the name suggests, Farmhouse style has roots in country living. Everything about Farmhouse - from the paint, to the furniture, to the accessories - are simple and sturdy. There are a lot of natural colors, natural wood and reclaimed materials. With pieces that lean more to function than form, Farmhouse can be surprisingly modern and stylish.

    Neutrals

Farmhouse is all about simplicity and is best represented by natural, neutral colors like beiges, greys and white. If you want to throw in color on an accent wall or with your furniture, consider natural colors like sage greens and light browns.

    Functional

Because of its country living roots, Farmhouse furniture and spaces should be sturdy and functional. Antiques can fit in with this style, but delicate, fragile pieces should be avoided. Reclaimed wood is a great option because it fits in with the color palette and can be used as functional pieces like tables and shelves.

    Comfort

Comfort goes hand in hand with choosing functional items. Big dining room tables and soft couches that can fit the whole family are key. Anything that appears delicate or breakable doesn’t fit with the Farmhouse style. Everything should exude comfort and invite your guests to relax and spend time in your home.

    Texture

Using a variety of textures helps add dimension to your home. This can include shiplap walls, a stone fireplace or a reclaimed beam for a mantle. The key is to pull in a variety of natural elements and textures that work in your room. Even simple additions like a wood and metal end table paired with a wool throw on your couch can make a big impact.

    Simple

Overall, the Farmhouse look is focused on simplicity. It feels natural as if the look was created over a period of time. The furniture doesn’t need to match. Instead of buying a whole set, find individual pieces that are comfortable and complement your style. Accessories are great, but be careful about overcrowding. Keep your Farmhouse look clean and simple.

How Scandinavian style is branching out into the world of color

Say “Scandinavian style,” and many people visualize light, clean-lined spaces, inspired by images from Nordic noir crime series, Ikea ad campaigns and interior design articles.

But in recent years, color and darker shades have worked their way into Scandinavian homes and photo shoots. Nordic walls must have been craving a hit of color since living rooms and bedrooms have hungrily embraced shades of gray, blue, green and pink.

Why have Scandinavians suddenly welcomed color, and how is it being used? With the help of trend studies, forecasts and a look in the rear-view mirror, we follow the journey of color into Nordic homes.

Light and Color in Nordic Homes

Why do we think of Nordic homes as light? Scandinavian homes traditionally have been designed to maximize sunlight. Stockholm is the Nordic region’s sunniest capital, with about 1,800 hours of sunshine a year, and that figure is at least 1,000 hours short of the amount enjoyed in Madrid, Sydney and Miami.

“The foundation of Scandinavian design, and our Nordic homes, will always be brightness and simplicity, because it’s simply what we need due to the lack of sunlight,” says Karl Johan Bertilsson, creative director at NCS Colour Academy, which offers color consultancy services to manufacturers, architects and designers around the world.

“What we’re seeing now, however, is a change,” Bertilsson says. “During the last two or three years, bold colors have returned.” Though a common perception is that Scandinavian homes have been whitewashed and pared back for decades, if not centuries, there have been cycles of colors in the Nordic countries. The 1970s had a touch of psychedelia with bright colors and vivid patterns, followed by pastels in the 1980s and mottled earth tones in the 1990s — all of which preceded the pure. But now the spectrum is changing again. At Nordic trend exhibitions and fairs, interior design has moved away from the pale blues and violets of the past toward clearer, stronger colors — most recently, orange, pink, yellow and red.

“Trends often represent a reaction to what used to be,” Bertilsson says. “The fashion industry is always the quickest to react, but the interior decoration and design industry isn’t far behind. Since the turn of the millennium and until now, neutral colors, such as white and gray, have been the dominant shades in most Scandinavian homes. The [brighter] color that’s now becoming increasingly popular is simply a response to that.

“However, it’s important to remember that trends are both speculative phenomena and processes that sometimes overlap, and they’re only able to gain ground when we’re mentally ready to accept them,” Bertilsson says. paleness of the new millennium.

One individual who has dared to use strong color, and whose home, pictured below, has received a lot of attention, is Daniel Heckscher, interior architect and designer at Note Design Studio in Stockholm. He painted his home in a palette of turquoise, orange, pink, blue-green and bright yellow. Pictures of Heckscher’s colorful home have been published in the new bookazine My Residence, where he writes that people dress in black and use white for interior design because they don’t dare do anything else.
“They’re afraid of making decisions and mistakes,” he writes. “We Westerners are governed too much by our fears. Life isn’t colorless! Even in early spring, when Sweden is as pale as ever, there are approximately 7,000 nuances if you look out of the window. I don’t understand why designers and creators would want to represent a fictional environment?”

    How Color Trends Break Through

When discussing color trends, Bertilsson points to studies that NCS uses to develop its analyses. “There’s research that shows color trends are cyclical,” he says. “Austrian [design consultant and psychologist] Leonhard Oberascher has studied color psychology and been able to prove that color trends repeat in cycles of 10 to 15 years. When everything is white and neutral, you grow tired after a while and eventually want to go to the other extreme of the spectrum. Humans work in the same way with everything, and colors are no exception.

“What [Oberscher has] been able to pinpoint specifically are the stages we go through along the way,” Bertilsson says. “Everything was very neutral in our homes a few years ago, then the blue and violet colors took off. This was followed by the chromatic colors. These will subsequently be dampened and darkened before the brown and beige nuances step in, followed by a return to the neutral colors. The reality exactly follows the patterns that Oberascher has been able to map out.” This is true internationally, but with the Nordic homes as early adopters.

There are other factors at play too. Theoretical trend pyramids show that we’re receptive to trends at different points in time, depending on what our current job is, where we live and how we live.

“We’re all affected by trends, whether we like it or not,” Bertilsson says. “Swedes and Danes enjoy a privilege, given our geographical, social and cultural environment, in the sense that we don’t only have the will, but also the means, to carry out extensive home redesigns. Therefore, as the chromatic color trends are on the way, we’ve not been late to embrace them.

“In a lot of other countries, people decide to repaint their walls when the color has started to peel off. In Sweden and Denmark, paint shops look like interior design stores, because when we buy paint, we try to achieve a wholeness. We want to fulfill an idea where the color plays a big part,” he says.
The Nordic consciousness in terms of color and design has lately been augmented by influential interior design bloggers, who have shared their advice on color codes. Arguably the most famous bedroom color in Sweden in recent years has been nicknamed Tant Johanna’s Green, pictured, after stylist and blogger Johanna Bradford, who painted her bedroom in the pale gray-green color.

“The fact that so many questions popped up about the color was in part due to the timing, as white walls had been dominating for years, and also because people were eager to try something else,” Bradford says. “But it’s also because it’s so difficult to find the right color, and that particular one is so unbelievably nice. If you see a color you like, you might as well ask for the color code.”

So, despite the fact that Scandinavians have begun painting with colors, they appear to do it within specific boundaries — the hues are subdued, rather than brash and bold, for example. “We dare to use more than just white, but I still think the end result is quite similar everywhere, since most people choose the same colors — as in the example of my bedroom wall,” Bradford says.

But don’t be fooled by the most recent white-dominant decades into believing that colorful walls in Nordic homes are a new phenomenon. Karin Fridell Anter, architect at the Swedish Association of Architects, has, together with Henrik Wannfors, written the book Painting Methods: Swedish Building Painting Methods From the Late Middle Ages to the Present Dayand has a longer view of color trends.

“Colored walls have come and gone in Swedish homes repeatedly throughout history,” Fridell Anter says. “What has mainly determined the choice of color is the availability of different shades and current style trends. The trend pendulum keeps swinging as a counter-reaction to the past, but the difference is that the pendulum is swinging ever faster.

“In the 1970s, we painted and wallpapered with strong colors and large patterns that resembled those of the Baroque period. The 1980s represented a counter-reaction that featured brighter pastels, and the 1990s again saw the return of mottled walls in earth tones, such as terra cotta, or navy blue and/or bright yellow,” she says.

“Further back in time, things didn’t happen as fast, and the difference between rich homes in the big cities and farming households in the countryside was bigger,” Fridell Anter says. “What the peasant community wished for was in many ways an imitation of what had already existed for many years in the trendsetting upper-class homes.”

Color as a Form of Expression

Did Swedes paint their homes more for practical rather than aesthetic reasons in the past? Fridell Anter says that’s not the case. “The purpose of interior painting in Sweden has always been to make the home look beautiful and to manifest something — to show via themes on the walls, the selection of colors or the decorations that you were a pious person, rich or aware of trends that were dominant in other cultures on the continent,” she says.

“In the same way that contemporary Swedes express themselves via interior decoration, the home was a status symbol in previous centuries too,” she adds.

So colored walls are not a new phenomenon in Scandinavia, but the style of painting perhaps has changed over the decades.

“Up until the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930, when the concept of functionalism was presented, decorative painting had been popular,” Fridell Anter says. “Painted surfaces hadn’t been a single color, but instead featured pictures or patterns, or imitated marble or wood. Functionalism represented a change in trends in the sense that people started painting entire walls in one single color, perhaps with a different one on the next wall. What we’re seeing now, with monochrome rooms and painted ceilings and woodwork, is an extension of that.”

Psychological factors, color as a personal form of expression and current trends appear to represent part of the explanation for Scandinavians’ sudden love of color. However, another strong factor in color choice is the response to contemporary life. NCS’ trend analysis for 2016 takes into account political events, the effects of digitization and global phenomena.

“We believe controversies will be the dominating factor in coming years,” says Bertilsson of NCS. “The unrest in the world, increased urbanization and stress lead, on the one hand, to a crudeness that’s influenced by the industrial style, with cold, hard colors. At the same time, the very same factors lead to increased escapism, where we dream of exotic places that inspire us, such as the unknown depths of the oceans and the colorful tropics. Trends will be triggered by upcoming world events, such as the Olympic Games in Brazil.”

The big difference between the company’s 2015 analysis and this year’s is that the colors are more extreme than before — moving from bright and soft nuances to more dramatic and darker colors.

    Bringing Nature Indoors

One word that often comes up when talking about Scandinavian style is nature. Has it been responsible for the color trend? “There’s definitely a connection,” Bertilsson says. “Last year, our main interpretation of escapism was that it revolved around dreams about the countryside. When urbanization makes us live closer to each other, in smaller houses or flats and with more noise, we create other mental worlds — we dream about lush trees and open fields.”

Swedish wallpaper company Sandberg recently released a collection that follows this theme. In its trend report, Sandberg has suggested that an unsafe environment leads to greater interest in one’s home. “Interior decoration has become more important and complex. With a serious environmental consciousness, we try to find ways to consume as little and as consciously as possible, while, at the same time, wishing to stay updated with news and trends.”

Stockholm-based color company Alcro suggests that Scandinavians incorporate nature themes into their homes with some of its 2016 colorswhich it says “bring to mind forest creatures, misty meadows and bewitching dreams that take place in the hours of dawn.”

With that in mind, the blue-green themes that have become popular on the walls of homes in Sweden and Denmark aren’t entirely surprising. According to Oberascher’s color trend timetable,Scandinaviansshould be right in the middle of the trend cycle and should look forward to warmer walls before they’re muted and eventually become white again.

With hindsight, Scandinavians seem to be quick to follow interior decoration trends — and the question isn’t whether they will all follow the trend toward using more color in their homes, but, rather, whether they have time to do so. Unlike centuries ago, when it took several decades for color trends to reach Swedish farms, the wheel is spinning faster, and changes are taking place in a digitized, globalized world.

So perhaps there’s no reason to debunk the myth of the white Scandinavian home after all. The newly painted colorful wall might not even have time to dry before the trendsetters have painted it white again.

5 ways to maximize your mini bathroom

As we always say at Schlage, the details make the design, so missing out on styling a smaller rooms is a major misstep in our book.

You’d think the smaller a room gets, the easier it would be to decorate. Not so – small spaces like half baths and storage closets often get the short end of the design stick while larger spaces like the living area and kitchen are paid special attention. As we always say at Schlage, the details make the design, so missing out on styling these smaller rooms is a major misstep in our book. Follow these five tips below, and the next time a guest enters your downstairs half-bath, they’ll emerge full of compliments about the stylish surprises they found.

    1. Get decadent

Don’t be afraid to go for rich textures or wild prints. The small space will prevent them from overwhelming the design. Because you won’t need large reams of wallpaper or gigantic furniture to fill the space, you can also afford to spend a little more on the few items you’ll need. Think marble, damask, crystal and gold – the sky’s the limit!

    2. Be smart about storage

If you make sure there’s plenty of storage space included in the design from the very beginning, you’ll avoid having to make changes later to keep the space livable. Choose sink cabinets with plenty of storage. Some cabinets have a lot of vertical space, but it’s wasted because there are no shelves to allow you to take advantage of it. Choose a cabinet that includes shelving or add your own afterward. If going for standalone shelving, scour the internet for pieces that add to the aesthetic but ensure you always have a place for towels and the like. Pieces that merge form and function are key.

    3. Indulge your dark side

Unless you’re going for a very striking or unique design, dark wall colors are usually advised against – especially if you aren’t a professional designer. But did you know this is a rule best broken when it comes to very small rooms? Not only can you get away with painting a small bathroom or closet in the darkest color you can find, it’s actually a great way to add some variety to the styling of your home. And it looks amazing when paired with brighter accessories and furniture that pop against the dark background.

    4. Fake it

Glass and mirrored surfaces are extremely popular in design right now, but they also have an excellent practical use: they create the illusion of more space. A glass enclosure around the shower, for example, is an excellent way to make your bathroom appear larger because you avoid breaking the space up into sections. Plus, it allows you to show off shower design features like custom tile designs, which are a great way to add a touch of your own unique personality.

    5. Think small

Opt for smaller fixtures, especially lighting. An oversized crystal chandelier may look fabulous in the master bath but come across as overwhelming in a smaller guest bathroom. Consider small plumbing fixtures as well – the delicate look blends well with the intimacy of a small space. Consider Schlage Custom Door Hardware, which is a new line of premium designer hardware that offers a smaller, low profile trim and streamlined knobs and levers that fit in perfectly with smaller spaces. Schlage Custom locks are a great way to add a touch of bling and come in all kinds of architecturally-inspired styles perfect for your unique taste.

Old doors - DIY - Schlage

Restoring salvaged items has been popular for a long time, but how do you know what to do with a piece once you’ve found it? Maybe you found a really cool door at a salvage yard or you bought a new door for your house but don’t want to throw the old one away. What do you do with it other than propping it up against a wall?

Check out all the ways you can repurpose a door, proving doors can do more than just hang on hinges in a door frame.

    Bookshelf

Renee over at Bulb to Blossom went the extra mile on this bookshelf and added a light to the top of it. We love the fabric she chose for the door to help tie it in with the rest of her décor.

    CORNER SHELF

Corners are almost always some of the most wasted spaces in a home. An old door converted into a shelf makes perfect use of this awkward space. Linda at Craftaholics Anonymous painted her corner door shelf bright turquoise to add a pop of color to the room.

    PHOTO DOOR

If you’re lucky enough to find a door full of windows, it’s a great opportunity to showcase some of your favorite photographs. Julie, of Redhead Can Decorate, had the perfect door for this project and used it to display photos of her children. She also used rope lighting to backlight the door and really make it stand out from its surroundings.

    SLIDING STORAGE DOOR

We love this project from Design Sponge that repurposes an old stall door into a sliding storage space. Sliding doors are a great option when you want to save space but still have privacy. You could do the same project with most doors, but the open top half of the stall door allows you to showcase what you want and hide what you don’t want seen.

    COUCH

If you want to do something different with an old door, check out this project also from Design Sponge. Instead of using the door as decoration, they turned it into a couch frame. Using the cushions from an old, broken-down couch and a reclaimed hardwood door, they created a one-of-a-kind couch with a handcrafted look.

    CHAIR

Love the idea of the couch but don’t have the indoor space? This project from Dumped and Discovered might be right up your alley. With a reclaimed door and some extra wood for the seat, they created an outdoor bench that’s perfect for any garden.

    ENTRY BENCH

Have some extra space in your front entryway but don’t know what to do with it? Check out this entry bench – also known as a hall tree – that Hillary at The Friendly Home created. This project used two doors, but since it serves as both a coat rack and storage bench, we think it was probably worth it.

There’s nothing quite like a home with history. From the lovably creaky stairs to the smell of hardwood, there’s a lot to love, and a lot to improve! Whether you’re adding a modern twist to your vintage home or faithfully recreating its original style, these five easy upgrades will allow you to make your mark without breaking the bank – or your back.
Vintage home - Glass knobs - Alexandria door knob - Schlage Custom

    1. Stay true to the home's history

Glass knobs are a vintage staple, especially for Victorian-style homes. Schlage recently introduced two new glass knobs (Hobson and Alexandria) in the Schlage Custom Door Hardware line, based on the two most popular styles from back in the day. They are much more affordable than their original counterparts, and they’re made with real glass that’s designed to last.

If you prefer the ease and comfort of using a lever rather than a knob, there are plenty of classic lever options that can enhance the look of an older home while staying true to its roots. Our new Whitney Lever is inspired by wrought iron scrollwork forged by classical blacksmiths, adding an authentic touch of traditional style to any room.

    2. Upgrade your backsplash

In recent years, manufacturers have done a great job of taking the guesswork out of adding a new backsplash to your kitchen. There are so many affordable and easy to use peel-and-stick patterns available online, it’s easy to find the perfect pattern and color for your kitchen and install it without professional help. Keep an eye on your bathrooms, too, for opportunities to use backsplash tile to add a little personality to your tub and shower or sink.

    3. Do a few pantry or storage closet makeovers

There’s nothing better than feeling organized and on top of things. Find your inner Type A with new storage bins and canisters. Look for decorative styles to add a unique personal touch. Bling out your shelves by attaching an eye-catching patterned wallpaper to the back, or simply adding a fresh shelf liner.

    4. Paint your old linoleum or vinyl sheet flooring

It may sound crazy, but modern paint is so long-lasting and flexible in terms of surface finish that this can be a great way to revamp your outdated flooring without breaking the budget or hiring help. With a little sandpaper, a lot of paint and some elbow grease, you can have a brand-new looking floor styled exactly to your specifications. There are plenty of tutorials online – we like this one.

    5. Create a container garden

If you have a smaller yard, don’t have time to landscape, or just want a slightly different look than the neighbors, a container garden is an easy way to dress up your home’s curb appeal. Try mixing and matching pot sizes and styles for an eclectic look, or choose pots in different shades of the same color for a monochromatic pop. Rainbows are a big trend right now – pair red, orange, yellow, blue and purple solid-colored pots with matching flowers to create your own garden rainbow!

For more, we talked with Ted Roberts, the Style and Design Chief at Allegion, Schlage’s parent company.

Ted Roberts - Schlage Custom Door Hardware

    Q&A with Ted Roberts

Q: Why is the melding of style and function so important in general?

    A. “When it comes to style, staying ahead of the curve is certainly challenging. But it’s also only one part of an equation that needs to take into consideration how something feels, works, lasts. Focusing on both style and function allows for seamlessly incorporating aesthetics with features, reliability and performance that delights.

“If all of this is in harmony, our homeowners are less likely to have a bad experience. We look at the entire experience – from the product and engineering itself through to product purchase and installation – to make sure homeowners who choose Schlage get what they expect. And more. Our new Schlage Custom Door Hardware is no exception.”

Q: So just another day in the office for you and your team at Schlage?

    A. “Anything but, which will come as no surprise to anyone who has purchased a Schlage product. This kind of innovation is at the heart of what we do and has been since Walter Schlage’s first patent in 1909 for a door lock that had the ability to turn lights on and off.

“It’s not technology for technology’s sake, but rather the development and application of new technologies to provide value to our customers, solve problems whether they be from a design perspective or a usage perspective, make things easier and in the end, truly delight. Schlage Custom Door Hardware really reflects this.

“With today’s smart homes, we’re developing a world of next-generation connected electronic hardware. Yet here we are introducing a new mechanical lock product that puts just as much of a premium on the needs of today’s – and tomorrow’s – homeowner as our smart home products. We’re really proud of that.”

Q: What was the inspiration for Schlage Custom™ Door Hardware?

A.“Quite simply, we wanted a product that solved more than one problem. We want to be stylistically relevant. We want it to be functionally flawless. We designed it to be customizable in both look and performance. And we want the user experience to be so good, the customer may actually be able to take for granted that it will continue to look great and work great for years to come."

“To achieve this, we looked beyond door locks and deliberately sought out and took clues from leaders, innovators in other areas including the tech sector as well as from categories like lighting, furnishings, fixtures, flooring and, believe it or not, even plumbing.”

The best time of year to buy items for your home | Schlage

Since various sales happen on different home goods throughout the year, it’s smart to plan ahead and buy what you need when the prices are lowest.

For a lot of people, a new year means a new list of things to do. Along with your other resolutions, you’ve probably got at least one project in your home that you want to work on this year. Since various sales happen on different home goods throughout the year, it’s smart to plan ahead and buy what you need when the prices are lowest. We compiled a list of changes you can make to your home based around when these products go on sale. If you want more information on home-related sales, check out this article at Consumer Reports.

    January

    Storage items

The holiday season just ended so not only is there a lot of decor on sale, there are a lot of storage items on sale as well. Take advantage of these sales and buy storage bins to clean up your garage, attic, closets or anywhere else that needs some organization.

    Linens

“White sales” also occur in January. Many stores have big discounts on linens including sheet sets, comforters, towels, etc. If you are planning on updating any of your bedrooms or bathrooms this year, now would be a great time to save.

    February

    Furniture

New furniture lines come out in March, so many retailers put their current lines on sale in February. This is a great time to get rid of that old couch with the sagging cushions or get a new dresser with fully-functioning drawers. Bonus: The extra storage gives you the perfect excuse to go shopping later.

    March

    Plants

March is still too early to start planting outdoors in many areas, but there are a lot of sales going on at nurseries. Even if you can’t plant outside yet, March is the perfect time to get vegetable seedlings and start them indoors. When it is time to transfer them in late April, you will have healthy plants going that will fruit earlier than ever.

    April

    Lawn Mowers

It is officially Spring and that means it’s time for yard work. Even if it’s a little early for the first official lawn mowing of the season, look into buying a new mower now and save money.

    Gas grills

As the temperatures start to rise, you can finally break out your grill. Gas grills go on sale in April as well, so if you are looking to replace your grill or upgrade from a charcoal grill, April is the best time to save.

    May

    Paint

May is a good time to pick up paint for your home projects. Maybe you got new bedding in January and now you need to paint your guest room to match, or you have some old furniture that you replaced in February that you want to sand down and paint. May is a great time of year to paint.

    June

    Power tools

June means Father’s Day, and Father’s Day means power tools. Even if you aren’t buying them for dad, it’s a great time to replace any tools that are barely hanging on. It’s also a great time to buy tools you haven’t been able to justify in the past. Take your projects to the next level with that pocket hole jig or paint sprayer you’ve always wanted. Chances are good that you will find them on sale in June.

    July

    Decking

Get more out of summer celebrations by adding or upgrading a deck to your back yard. Whether you’re looking for something small for intimate gatherings, or a massive showstopping deck to host the entire neighborhood, July is the best time to buy the decking. And maybe you can install it with some of the new tools you bought in June.

    Wood

While you’re working on installing your new deck, you’ll probably need wood stain. Conveniently, July is also the best time to buy it.

    August

    Linens (again)

It’s time for kids to head off to college, so a lot of stores put linens on sale again. And while you’re probably not making plans to move into a new dorm, there’s no reason not to make use of the sale and update another bathroom or another bedroom you didn’t update in January.

    Outdoor furniture

You brought your outdoor furniture out months ago, and the weather has taken its toll. Or maybe you didn’t have any furniture because you just put your deck in last month. Either way, August is the time to buy outdoor furniture before it all gets put away for winter.

    Flooring

If you’ve decided it’s too hot for outdoor projects, we don’t blame you. Fortunately, while the temperatures are rising, the price of flooring tends to drop in August. If you’ve been looking to rip up your old, stained carpets and put in hardwood floors, this is your time.

    September

    Gardening supplies

While you may have picked your last tomato of the year, it’s never too early to start planning for next year. As stores make room for holiday décor, gardening supplies go on sale before they go away for the season. Now is the perfect time to stock up on supplies for next year’s garden.

    Home accessories

September is also a great time to save on the finishing touches like lamps and rugs. If you just re-floored in August, it’s possible you need some new accessories for your room. And if you didn’t re-floor in August, you could probably use a new rug.

    October

    Small home appliances

October is the start of the holiday season and for many of us that means it’s time to start cooking and baking. October is a great time to pick up new, small kitchen appliances like microwaves, toaster ovens, etc.

    November

    Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Tis the season to save. Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, deals can be had on anything and everything. Consumer electronics, including smart home devices, are bound to be big hits in 2018. One or two smart home purchases can be all the updates your home needs to become connected and up-to-date.

    December

    Major appliances

December is the time to buy major appliances like a new refrigerator, oven or dishwasher. Maybe you need more room in your fridge after Thanksgiving or you just want a glass top stove because you are tired of scrubbing burners. December is a great time to update your kitchen appliances.

Thinking about doing any of these projects? Let us know of any big deals you score and we’ll keep you updated with Schlage promotions on our Facebook page!

    2018 Trends - Style & Design - Technology - Schlage

With a new year comes new trends, and January is the perfect time to refresh the interior of your home. Whether you’re looking to make big changes or small updates, we’ve compiled a list of trends expected to be popular this year so you can get a head start on decorating.

We talked to Ted Roberts, the Style and Design Chief at Allegion, Schlage’s parent company, about what he expects 2018’s biggest trends to be.

    Black

Roberts said black will continue to be very popular this year. Whether it’s black front doors, black rooms or Matte Black door hardware, anyone can make black work in their home because it goes with everything.

    TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATED WITHIN THE HOME

Product designers across all sorts of industries are adopting the latest technology, and that trend will only continue to gain momentum. Right now, you can buy smart home products for home alarm systems, smart locks, heating and cooling, lighting, and even your kitchen. All of these categories are growing as more and more brands create new products that integrate with smart home technology. Roberts expects this to continue and for more categories to be introduced into the market.

Schlage is at the forefront of where style and tech collide as we work to make smart home technology more accessible and integrated with style. Schlage’s Futurist and VP of Strategy and Partnerships, Rob Martens, predicts the next big operating system will be inside the home.

    PATTERNS AND TEXTURE

Patterns and texture were popular in 2017 and will continue to be popular this year. There has been a resurgence of 70s stylings. Yellows, greens and bold patterns are becoming popular again. Texture includes anything from animal prints to metal finishes to natural wood. Pantone predicts similar trends for 2018 in their article on Realtor.com.

Do you like these ideas? Do you already have some of them in your home? If you’re looking for more style inspiration, check out our Style Talk Pinterest board.

9 ways to embrace exposed fixtures and finishes in your home

    January 11, 2018 9:45 AM by emily.bailey

    Thursday, January 11, 2018

There can be beauty in raw materials. Display them with care, and the effect is surprisingly warm and welcoming.

It’s not always deliberate that a great piece of work is left unfinished — see Schubert’s 8th Symphony or Mozart’s Requiem, for example. However, sometimes in the creative process there’s a decision to embrace the beauty in raw or “unfinished” materials. In the case of homes and other buildings, there might be an aesthetic choice about whether to expose certain elements — from structural steel to bare concrete to lightbulbs — that might ordinarily be hidden. Should you dare to bare?

Check out these ideas for creating your own unfinished masterpiece.

    Structural wood

Exposed structural wood is a much more common sight than some of the other materials in this story. The display of raw wood in a home creates a sense of bringing the natural world inside, and there’s a real-life essence to be gained from the look. Structural oak beams in particular bring so much feeling to a space. Dark woods are wonderful for a framing effect against crisp white walls and ceilings — great for demarcating areas of an open-plan space. And cherry and lighter woods work well as part of an overall scheme; bring them in through furniture, floors and staircases.

    Electrical accessories

Wiring can be used in interesting ways. The most common is to hang lighting cables in an arrangement that suggests a sense of temporariness, as in an art studio or a construction site where string lights have been hung for a specific purpose. With a little imagination, the opportunities are endless. Cable coverings can be created in a vast array of materials and colors, for example. Just be sure the design is certified and installed by a qualified electrician.

    Bricks (in an industrial property)

Bricks and mortar are rough and cold and not always a look that comes to mind when you’re designing a cozy living room. Yet using exposed brick, especially on one feature wall, has great merit. The subtle irregularities in texture and color can really be brought to life with some skilfully placed lighting, such as the low table lamp that casts a warm glow in this warehouse-style apartment.

    Bricks (in a period house)

If you’re lucky enough to have a good-looking internal brick wall in your home, simply seal it with clear or colored products that can be found at any building supply store. If you’re not, then faux brick panels can be installed, the benefit of which is that you can identify a pattern and color that work for you.

    Pipe

Pipe is a wonderful material with which to get creative. In fact, when I was training as a heating engineer, we would create small sculptures from copper pipe to demonstrate our skill. The most common raw finishes are steel and copper, though any finish can be achieved through painting, plating or polishing.

There’s a huge variety of fittings and fixings, as well as threading and bending techniques. Uses include water and gas, obviously, but pipe can also be used as cable trunking to form some interesting lighting features.

Any design that makes functional use of the pipe (as opposed to purely decorative) should be approved and installed by a qualified engineer who can certify that the work complies with regulations.

    Concrete

One of the most overlooked building materials in its raw, unfinished form is concrete. But from prefabricated panels to polished countertops, it’s a highly versatile medium. Concrete also lends itself beautifully to a minimalist interior. There’s a nakedness to it that asks for solitary items of furniture or artwork in isolation.

The irregularities in concrete’s surface coloring work well with other materials that are natural or imperfect in some way. Acid-distressed glass is a great example.

    Plywood

Sheet materials, especially plywood, can be a real boon to a homeowner’s budget. Although cost isn’t the ideal factor on which to base key design choices, it also can’t be ignored. Fortunately, plywood can look incredibly warm and stylish in its raw state, and it’s a brilliant base on which to redecorate at a later date if you tire of the look.

How to do it right? In a word: pine. Pine furniture, pine cabinets, pine shelves. Then understand that this really is an unfinished look, so choose light fixtures, tables, chairs and other features that also have a certain “makeshift” style. Try railings made of scaffolding poles, upturned crates for side tables and industrial-style wall lights.

    Ductwork

The practical purpose of ductwork is to achieve proper air flow. A good duct system will keep the air throughout a home fresh and clean and make central parts of the property noticeably more comfortable.

OK, it’s a bold look to have ductwork out in all its glory, but design fortune favors the brave. All that raw metal can look severe, but it can also be striking in a minimal, contemporary room. Equally, it can look right at home in a space that incorporates a lot of other exposed raw building materials.

Be conscious of noise implications when situating the duct outlet, and make sure you get up there frequently to dust the metal. Keeping ductwork shiny will mean the difference between a really cool design feature and an unfortunate consequence of a poorly designed building.

    Structural steel

Steel is a remarkable material for what it allows us to achieve in architectural design, to the point that we can appear to defy the laws of physics with floating staircases, split-level mezzanines and the like.

Structural steel can be left exposed to give a great industrial feel to an interior. Like exposed ductwork, this is a strong look and will work best if you really play it up as a feature. But again, check your regulations: Steel that’s integral to the structure of the building must be enclosed by fire-rated materials and cannot be left exposed.
