Schlage Encode lock and Amazon Echo Dot | Schlage

When you buy a Schlage Encode lock during Amazon Prime Day, you'll receive a free Amazon Echo Dot. Here's what you can do when you have multiple Echo devices.

Are you a fan of free stuff? Of course you are. On Amazon Prime Day in 2020, you can get just that. When you buy a Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt, you’ll also receive a free Amazon Echo Dot. And if you already have an Alexa voice assistant? Sync them together and take advantage of these five things you can do with multiple Echo devices.
Schlage Encode lock and Echo dot.

    1. Protect your home with Alexa Guard

Perhaps one of the most underutilized features of an Echo device is Alexa Guard. This security feature is designed to detect sounds – breaking glass, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, footsteps – when it’s set to Away mode. You say, “Alexa, I’m leaving” and you’ll receive an alert on your phone if it “hears” a potential threat to your home’s security.

Alexa Guard works best when you have multiple Echo devices. With multiple devices, you’ve essentially added more sensors. For example, if you only have one Echo Dot and it’s in the bedroom, it may not be close enough to detect sound at the patio door. A second Echo device can help eliminate that blind spot. To activate Alexa Guard, select Guard from the Settings menu in the Amazon Alexa App. You can also set preferences such as Away Lighting, Smart Alerts and link to third-party home security systems.

    2. Help secure your door with the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt

While we’re on the subject of security, let’s talk about how you can use the Echo Dot, or other Echos, to control your Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt. When the lock is connected to your home WiFi, you can ask Alexa about the status of your deadbolt, as well as tell her to lock and unlock the door. And when you have multiple Echo devices – one in the kitchen, another in the bedroom, maybe one in the basement – it’s easier than ever to control your lock with those voice commands. Saying “Alexa, lock the door” from bed or asking “Alexa, is my door locked?” from the kids’ playroom provides ultimate convenience and peace of mind.

    3. Update shopping lists, calendars and reminders

When you ask Alexa to add something to your grocery list, put something on your calendar or set a reminder, it goes to your Amazon account. That means you can access that list or get the notification from any of your Echo devices. No more rushing to meet your kids’ bus because you didn’t hear the reminder from the other end of the house.

Note that if you set a timer or alarm on one Echo device, it will not sync with others in your home. The timer will only sound on that original Echo.

    4. Play music simultaneously in multiple rooms

You’re hosting a get-together and want your party music to play in the kitchen and living room. Or maybe you’re cleaning the house from top to bottom and need some jams to keep the motivation going. You can play the same playlist on multiple devices in multiple rooms. PC Mag has step-by-step instructions for grouping your devices and setting up that functionality. Of course, if you’d rather not have music playing on all devices – perhaps your teen has different tastes than you – you can simply ungroup them as well.

    5. Drop In on friends and family

Treat your Echos like an intercom with Alexa Drop In. This is a super-convenient function when you want to call the kids to dinner without screaming or if you want to tell your dog to get off the couch (or just tease them a little bit) when you’re not in the room. You can say, “Alexa, drop in on the Living Room Echo” and immediately start the conversation to find out if your sweetie wants something to drink before the movie starts. Use this guide from How To Geek to enable Drop In for your Echo devices.

In addition to this limited time offer on the Schlage Encode lock and Echo Dot bundle, you can also get 20% off the Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt and select interior door hardware on Prime Day. Find great deals on a variety of interior door knobs and levers, from the traditional Schlage Georgian knob to the more contemporary Schlage Latitude lever, as well as our best selection of trim styles and finishes.

6 simple things to consider when shopping for door hardware.

Man looking at smartphone | Schlage

No longer a question of if homeowners are adding smart home technology to their renovation to-do lists, it’s more a matter of how and with which devices you’ll choose.

Buying a new door knob is simple enough. Then you get to the store or look online and there are more options than you expected. Or you bring something home only to find out it’s not quite right. We’re here to reassure you that there’s no need to feel overwhelmed. This checklist shows you what to consider when buying door hardware. It won’t be long before you’re deciding which DIY project to take on next.
Simple project checklist for buying Schlage door hardware.

    Choose your style

You might not think of door hardware style often, but you do notice when it’s scratched, dented, doesn’t match the look of the rest of the house or is just plain ugly. Don’t be fooled into thinking that a door knob is just a door knob. Look for hardware that matches your personal taste and the architectural style of your home, whether that means contemporary and sleek, traditional and ornate, or somewhere in between.

When considering style, also weigh the pros and cons of door knobs versus levers and how they fit your lifestyle. Do you have a sneaky pet who can operate a lever to let themselves out? Unless it’s a service dog, that’s probably not a good thing and you want a door knob. Or maybe you do prefer a lever because it’s easier to grip with arthritic hands.

Choose a finish … or four

Like style, the finish of your door hardware is largely up to personal taste. Perhaps the biggest consideration here is whether you want all the fixtures in your home to match. We’re not just talking about all your levers being Bright Chrome, either. Look at light fixtures, faucets and other plumbing, cabinet pulls and furniture with metallic accents. Fans of minimalism, Scandinavian and, typically, more traditional interior design might lean toward focusing on a single finish.

Mixing metal finishes is also an option, particularly as maximalism gains popularity. It can be easy to go a bit overboard, however, so try to limit it to four or fewer finishes, find some matching elements to keep from looking too chaotic and, when you do mix and match, choose complementing contrasts. Our guide to mixing hardware finishes can help you get it right the first time.

Count how many doors you have

You might be surprised by just how many doors there actually are in your house. You don’t want to get home and find out you’re short one. Of course, you don’t need to replace every single door knob or lever, but keep in mind that doing so can help you maintain a cohesive look throughout the house. At the very least, it can keep a hallway from looking mismatched if you have a bright brass door knob on one door and a satin nickel knob in a different style on another.

When counting your doors, don’t forget closets, basement entries, laundry rooms and others you might not use every day. It might help to physically walk through the house and keep a tally.

    Decide what functions you need

Now that you know how many new knobs and levers you need, decide what functions you want. For interior door hardware, you have three primary options: Bed & Bath, Hall & Closet and Inactive.

    • Bed & Bath (Privacy): Choose Bed & Bath hardware for rooms where extra privacy is needed. A push-button lock secures the door from inside the room, while turning the knob or lever from the inside unlocks it. As the name implies, Bed & Bath door hardware is best for bedrooms and bathrooms, but they’re also common for home offices, for example.

    • Hall & Closet (Passage): Choose Hall & Closet hardware for doors where privacy is not needed. The latch will help keep the door closed, but there is no locking function. Hall & Closet knobs and levers are best for any kind of closet – bedroom, entryway, pantry – or even on children’s bedroom doors if you don’t want them to be able to lock themselves in.

    • Inactive: Sometimes also known as Non-turning or Dummy, inactive knobs and levers are primarily decorative. They’re most often used for the non-functioning side of French doors and other doors that don’t need to latch.

Schlage door hardware comes in each of these functions, so regardless of the style and finish you choose, you can also get the desired functions without compromising your look.

    Remember your exterior doors

Remember to include exterior doors in your considerations. You might decide that now’s the perfect time to upgrade your front door handleset, deadbolt or smart lock. Use the same tips above for choosing its style and finish. Count your exterior doors, too, particularly if you want to update a front and back door. Or a front and garage entry door.

When choosing a lock for an exterior door, you can decide between mechanical or electronic deadbolts. Schlage deadbolts, whether mechanical or smart, are rated Best by the BHMA in Finish, Durability and Security. Knowing that each lock comes with the peace of mind and quality you expect to help protect your home, the main decision is whether a smart lock provides additional levels of convenience that fit your lifestyle. Make sure you have a screwdriver

You might be wondering if you have the necessary tools to install door hardware. Chances are that you do since, with Schlage door hardware, all you need is a screwdriver. We design our hardware, whether for interior or exterior doors, to fit on all standard pre-drilled doors. Mechanical deadbolt vs. smart lock: How to choose

Mechanical deadbolt vs. Smart lock | Schlage

We’ve weighed the pros and cons of mechanical and smart locks to help you choose the best deadbolt for your home.

Choosing the right deadbolt requires more than picking out the best deal on the shelf. When you want to keep your home and family safe, you need a lock that fits your lifestyle and provides security you can trust. We’ve weighed the pros and cons of mechanical and smart locks to help you choose the best deadbolt for your home.

    Security

Schlage mechanical deadbolt and smart lock with blue check marks.

Look for locks that are graded for your security needs. The Builder’s Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) rates locks for security, finish and durability. A grade of A is considered “Best,” while a C is “Good.” Nearly all of Schlage locks, both mechanical and smart, are rated AAA, so you can have peace of mind that your home is safe with Schlage.

If we had to give an edge to one of them, however, it would probably go to our smart locks. The Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt and Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt both come with built-in alarms, so you’ll be alerted when there’s a disturbance at the door. And when you’ve enabled your smart lock for remote capability, you’ll get that alarm notification on your phone, even when you’re not home.

    Keyless convenience

Schlage mechanical deadbolt without check mark and smart lock with blue check mark.

If you live an active lifestyle, keys can be a drag. It's a pain to walk the dog or go for a run with keys bouncing in your pocket. And good luck trying to find a secure place to hide the key until you return. For all those times you come home with your hands full – controlling the dog on his leash, after grocery shopping, carrying the kids – you certainly don’t want to be fumbling around to unlock your door.

Unique access codes for your smart lock allow you to enjoy a simpler way to access your home. With the touchscreen or keypad, which are either illuminated or back-lit so there’s no guessing in the dark, you can stop the balancing act. This head-to-head win goes to smart locks.

    Access control

Schlage mechanical deadbolt without check mark and smart lock with blue check mark.

If you have a housekeeper, friend or other service personnel who needs access to your home when you're not around, how will you make that happen? With a mechanical deadbolt, you’ll need to either hide a spare key or make an extra for them to keep. Unfortunately, this means they’ll have access to your home at any time of day or night. And don’t even get us started on how easy it is for a potential intruder to find the spare under a fake rock.

For better control over who has access to your home and when, choose an electronic lock. All you need to do is program a unique access code for each trusted person and decide if you want their code to work all the time, only at certain times of the day or only until a certain date. This is useful for a babysitter who may come to your home frequently but should only be there after school or when you’re asking a neighbor to walk the dog while you’re on vacation.

One more feature that gives the edge to smart locks in the realm of access control: The Schlage Home app. Use the app to see when codes are used and to track the access codes you’ve assigned to friends and family. It’s just one of several secure ways to store your codes.

    Not getting locked out

Schlage mechanical deadbolt without check mark and smart lock with blue check mark.

How many times have you shut the door on your wait out only to realize that you left your keys inside? And there’s probably more than one story about your kid losing or forgetting their key, forcing them to wait alone on the porch. To avoid an expensive call to the locksmith or finding a creative – and unsafe – way into the house, choose a smart lock.

We’ve already talked about keyless convenience and access codes, but when your smart lock has remote capability, you can also use your smart phone to lock or unlock the door for trusted visitors. A few taps in the app and you can let your kids in the front door even while you’re still at work.

Don’t worry about getting locked out because of battery failure on your smart lock, either. Schlage smart locks will alert you – on the lock itself, in the Schlage Home app or both – when your battery is running low. You’ll have plenty of advance notice to make the switch.

    Affordability

Schlage mechanical deadbolt with blue check mark and smart lock without check mark.

Both mechanical and smart locks are available at a range of price points, but mechanical deadbolts do tend to be less expensive. Most electronic locks are priced anywhere from $100-$300 depending on the number of features and level of security they offer. If budget is a concern but you still want to go high-tech, consider an electronic deadbolt that does not have home automation capabilities, like the Schlage Touch™ Keyless Touchscreen Deadbolt.

Whichever type of lock you choose, remember to factor in those BHMA security grades before you buy. A cheap lock could be more likely to wear down, causing you to spend more in the long run on repairs and replacements. A cheaper, lower quality lock could also work less effectively in the first place, putting the things you care about at risk.

    Easy to install

Schlage mechanical deadbolt and smart lock with blue check marks.

The only clear winner when it comes to installation is you. Installing a Schlage lock – both mechanical and smart – is simple. All you need is a screwdriver and a few minutes’ time. Our deadbolts are also designed to fit on all standard door preps, so there’s no drilling or resizing required to put them in place.

Don’t let the words “electronic” and “smart” scare you, either. Our locks are battery-powered, no hardwiring required, so you can install Schlage smart locks on your own. Save the call to your local handyman or electrician for a tougher job.

Our How-To Center has step-by-step tutorials and videos to show you how simple installation can be.

    Style options

Schlage mechanical deadbolt with blue check mark and smart lock without check mark.

Mechanical locks and front door handlesets generally feature a wider range of styles and finishes. On the other hand, electronic locks often come in sleek designs but are limited to just a handful of finishes. If creating a cohesive look from the front door, throughout your home’s interior and to the back patio is a high priority, you’ll find more options with mechanical door hardware.

Our Style Selector can help you choose a look for your deadbolt and handleset combo as well as interior door knobs and levers.

    Smart home compatibility

Schlage mechanical deadbolt without check mark and smart lock with blue check mark.

Clearly, this one goes to smart locks. When home automation is important to you – for the energy savings, additional convenience, extra security or just plain fun – you want a smart lock. A mechanical deadbolt would be like trying to use a curling iron to turn on the radio. It simply won’t work. Pay attention to which smart locks work with which technology to make sure it’s compatible with your existing smart home hubs and devices.

Now that you’ve weighed your options and decided which priorities are most important to you, visit Schlage.com to see all our mechanical and electronic products and find a retailer near you. That’s where you’ll also find our Get Help Deciding Tool that will help you choose the right smart lock for your home.

Looking for a Ring door lock? You want a Schlage.

    Ring door lock | Schlage

When you combine a Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt with Ring video doorbells and cameras, you get the best security features that both have to offer so you focus on everyday life.

Just as you rely on your entire car – seatbelt, airbags, brakes – to keep you safe, you should be able to rely on your entire entryway – door, deadbolt, frame – to protect your home and family. That’s why, even though we make locks, Schlage encourages you to take every precaution and ensure your security fits your needs and lifestyle.

You might think of a smart lock-security camera bundle as your home’s version of a front-collision warning system, which uses cameras, lasers and other technology to keep you safe while you focus on driving. When you combine a Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt with Ring video doorbells and cameras, you get the best security features that both have to offer so you focus on everyday life.

Schlage Encode smart wifi deadbolt on front door with Ring video doorbell.

What are the advantages of a home security camera?

There are many advantages to installing a video doorbell or camera on your front door beyond peace of mind. Some of the tangible benefits include:

    • Make intruders think twice. Sometimes just seeing a camera will deter thieves from even attempting to enter your home, so make the camera obvious.

    • See who’s snooping. If someone does try to break in or steal a package, video footage of the event could help to identify the culprit.

    • Know when deliveries are made. Most of us have received a notification that a package was dropped off only for it to go MIA, either because the delivery wasn’t actually completed or porch pirates swiped it.

    • Know who’s in your home. See when your kids or service providers come and go.

    • Screen visitors. Whether you’re at work, don’t want your kids to answer the door for a stranger or are simply too comfortable to get off the couch, see who’s knocking without actually going to the door.

    • Improve resale value. A growing number of homebuyers are looking for smart home technology included in the deal.

    • Lower home insurance payments. Some companies will reduce your premium when you add security measures.

Why should I trust my home to the Schlage Encode lock and Ring?

Bundling your Schlage Encode deadbolt with a Ring camera or video doorbell lets you take advantage of the lock’s best features and then some. All Schlage products come backed with 100 years of experience in keeping your home secure. Add to that our limited lifetime warranty and you can be confident you’re getting the quality and durability you expect and need.

It’s more than that, though. The Schlage Encode deadbolt offers greater levels of convenience from the minute you install it to the countless moments you use it every day. There’s no hardwiring needed during installation and because of its built-in WiFi, no hub is required for remote access. Check the lock’s status from anywhere, so you never have to worry or make a return trip home to doublecheck if your door is secure. Create and schedule up to 100 access codes so the people you trust most have access only when you want them to. And don’t forget about Alexa. Ask the voice assistant to lock and unlock your door (you’ll verify the unlock command with a PIN) and make the lock part of your favorite Alexa routine.

Bring the Ring Video Doorbell into the mix by setting everything up via the Key by Amazon App and you put even greater security and convenience at your fingertips. Lock and unlock the door directly from the Live View of your camera in the Ring app. This is perfect for when you get held up in the office or at the airport and need to let a dog walker or babysitter in the house. Or maybe you want to unlock the door for a friend while you finish dinner in the kitchen.

It’s not just about the “Ring door lock,” though. You also get the benefit of being part of the Ring community. With Ring’s range of devices and accessories, you can protect your home in more ways than just securing the front door. Consider adding compatible smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as well as flood and freeze detectors as part of your complete home security. There’s even a Ring Neighbors app that helps communities work together for a safer neighborhood.

With this flexibility and customizable options, you can easily update your surveillance as your needs change. It’s the perfect way to build the right security system with only the features you want and trust. Plus, when you choose Schlage and Ring, you’re choosing two of the industry’s leaders in home security, doing exactly what they do best. Can you think of a better way to peace of mind?

10 things you can do with the Schlage Home app.

Schlage home app and dog | Schlage

The free Schlage Home app for Apple iOS and Android is your “remote control”. Here's our list of the top 10 things you can do with it.

We’re turning 100! Over 10 weeks, Schlage is sharing its favorite top-10 lists. That’s 100 tips, ideas and moments of inspiration so you can enjoy the safety, simplicity and style of Schlage for another 100 years to come.

Remote access from anywhere is many people’s favorite Schlage smart lock feature. To take advantage of that and be able to monitor and control your lock any time of day no matter where you are, you basically need two things: a WiFi connection and a smartphone app like the Schlage Home app.

The free Schlage Home app for Apple iOS and Android is your “remote control” if you have a Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt or Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt. If you have a Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt, you will need to use one of our partners’ apps like the Nexia or Samsung SmartThings app.

Now on to our top-10 list of things you can do with the Schlage Home app.

Person working in office with dog in lap and looking at Schlage Home app on phone.

    1. Get interactive instructions in the palm of your hand

Installing a Schlage smart lock is pretty simple, but even we’ll admit that having a step-by-step guide is helpful. The Schlage Home app provides interactive instructions to make adding smart security to your home easier than ever.

    2. Check the status of your lock from anywhere

Whether you’re already snug in bed or halfway to work, you might need to know if you remembered to lock the door. With the Schlage Home app, you can check the status of your lock from anywhere. And if you did forget to lock up before you left or settled in for the night …

    3. Lock or unlock your door from anywhere

… you can lock or unlock your door with the push of a button in the Schlage Home app. Of course it adds major convenience when you’re away from home, but remote ability to lock or unlock the door can also give peace of mind in emergency situations. If you have an elderly relative who has trouble remembering to lock up, you can check the status and then switch the deadbolt from your phone when you’re in your own home miles way. Or if you live alone and take a fall, you can unlock the door for emergency responders, even when you can’t get up to let them in.

    4. Create and manage access codes on your smartphone

The Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt holds up to 100 unique access codes, and the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt saves up to 30. Using the app is a great way to create those codes for trusted individuals, program when the codes are active – like Wednesday afternoons only for the cleaning lady – and delete them when they’re no longer needed.

    5. Store codes securely

When you create many access codes for different individuals, it can be difficult to keep track of those codes. The app can help you securely manage them so that you don’t have to write them down and hope no one finds your list.

    6. Check your battery

All Schlage smart locks are battery operated, which is great during installation because there’s no hardwiring necessary. But how do you know when you need to replace the batteries? There are actually many ways, but one of them is in the app. You’ll receive a notification when your power is running low, so you have plenty of advanced warning.

    7. Know when your lock is used

You have two ways to track who is using their access codes and when: the history log and push notifications. If you simply need to see a record of whose code was entered and at what time, the log is for you. For a more active approach, you can designate which codes you receive notifications for and receive an alert in the moment. It’s perfect if you want to be notified when the dog walker arrives or when a caregiver heads out for the day.

    8. Choose or update your settings

When you install your lock for the first time or if you need to make adjustments as your life changes, the Schlage Home app is where you go to choose a variety of settings. Activate your alarm, change the length of time before your deadbolt will automatically lock, turn on one-touch locking and more, all in the app’s Settings menu.

    9. Confirm firmware updates

You don’t have to replace your entire lock to take advantage of new technological developments. As long as your lock stays connected to your network, Schlage will push firmware updates to your deadbolt. If you want to verify that you have the latest updates or want to manually initiate those updates, you can do so in the Schlage Home app.

    10. Manage multiple locks

If you love and trust Schlage smart locks enough to put them on multiple doors, the Schlage Home app can help you manage each of those locks all in one place. Enjoy any of the first nine points whether your locks are on the front door, the back, a vacation rental or all of the above.

Learn more about the Schlage Home app at Schlage.com. If you’re still wondering which lock is right for your family, try out Get Help Deciding Tool. Just answer a few simple questions, and we’ll suggest which lock might the best fit for your lifestyle and the technology you like to use.

How to properly clean your smart locks and door hardware.

    Woman cleaning door knob

Keep your door hardware looking as good as the day you installed it. Here’s what you need to know to properly care for each unique finish.

Today’s current environment has us thinking differently about our household’s high-touch surfaces. Now more than ever we are focusing on the importance and what it means to keep a safe and healthy home.

We’ve included the tips below to help you navigate how to properly clean and disinfect your smart locks and door hardware.

Woman cleaning door knob with cloth.

Step 1: Clean your door hardware

Before you can apply disinfectant, you need to remove any dust, dirt or debris that could keep that disinfectant from working effectively. To do this, Schlage recommends starting with a mild liquid dishwashing soap detergent mixed with water.

    • Gently wipe the surface of your door hardware with the mild soap and water mixture.

    • Using water only, wipe surfaces again to remove any detergent left behind.

    • Immediately dry all surfaces with a clean towel.

    • Do not spray or immerse the hardware in liquid at any time.

Step 2: Disinfect your door hardware

Once you have removed excess dirt and grime from your hardware, you’re ready to disinfect it. Pay special attention to the disinfectants’ ingredients. Some contain harsh or abrasive chemicals that will damage the finish of your hardware. Be sure to refer to the product’s manual for more information.

    • Follow the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) guidelines under “How to clean and disinfect.” There you will find easy-to-prepare bleach or alcohol solutions.

    • Wipe surfaces gently, and do not spray or immerse your hardware in the disinfectant. When cleaning the keypad of your smart lock, do not leave disinfectants applied for a long period of time.

    • Per CDC guidelines, do not dry the surfaces. Instead, allow them to air dry to give the disinfectant time to work effectively.

Do not apply cleaners or disinfectants to your door hardware in direct sunlight or elevated temperatures. Doing so can harm your hardware’s protective coating.

Step 3: Keep your door hardware looking like new

The following tips will help maintain your door hardware and protect it from tarnishing from natural elements.

    For clear-coated finishes

Initial care for most finishes requires only periodic cleaning with mild non-abrasive soap and light buffing with a soft cloth. We also recommend coating most finishes, including chrome finishes, with a non-abrasive car wax to preserve the color and protect it from the elements. Particular care should be taken to avoid paint smears, thinners and strong cleaning agents as they will quickly destroy the protective coatings and subject the finish to rapid oxidation and discoloration.

    For oil-rubbed bronze finish

Oil-Rubbed bronze finish is a living finish that changes over time to give it a constantly evolving presentation. Since it does not have a clear coat, the flat brown coating eventually wears down to a copper penny color.

To care for this finish, wipe with a little vegetable oil on a soft cloth, but be careful not to use too much. Too much oil may leave residue on your hands with use. Household detergents and mild abrasive powder may be used to restore the high metal color without seriously affecting the original compound of the metal. Finish by rubbing with furniture paste wax.

    Google Home Mini

Connecting your devices to a Google Assistant hub has all kinds of benefits, both fun and practical, so why not consider making one of those devices a Schlage smart lock?

Voice commands, like those you give Google Assistant, are loved by many. You can control electronics without having to get out of bed. You can turn things on and off when your hands are full. In an emergency, you can often call for help even if you can’t reach the phone. Connecting your devices to a Google Assistant hub has all kinds of benefits, both fun and practical, so why not consider making one of those devices a Schlage smart lock?
    Google Home mini

Which Schlage smart locks work with Google Assistant?

Google Assistant is compatible with the Schlage Encode™ Smart WiFi DeadboltSchlage Encode™ Smart WiFi Deadbolt, Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt with Z-Wave Plus.

The  Schlage Encode Plus and Schlage Encode deadbolts, because they have built-in WiFi do not need a smart home hub or adapter to work with Google Assistant. However, to pair the Schlage Sense lock with your Google Assistant-enabled device, you will need the Schlage Sense™ WiFi Adapter. If you have the Schlage Connect deadbolt, you will need to sync it with your Nexia Home hub for Google Assistant capabilities.

What app do I need to control my Schlage smart lock with Google Assistant?

For all three Schlage locks, you will need to have the Google Home app on your smartphone to sync devices and to add your lock to Google routines. To take advantage of other features like creating and managing access codes remotely or viewing the access history log, you will still use other apps like the Schlage Home app for Schlage Sense and Schlage Encode locks, or the Nexia app for the Schlage Connect lock. Visit our smart locks overview pages for more details on the specific features available.

What can I ask Google Assistant to do with my Schlage smart lock?

There are currently two voice commands that allow you to control your Schlage smart lock via Google Assistant. “OK Google, is my door locked?” lets you check the status of your deadbolt. This is particularly handy when lying in bed, cozy with a cat on your lap and you can’t remember if you locked up before turning in.

If you did forget, you still don’t have to disturb Fluffy. “OK Google, lock my door” will secure the deadbolt for you.

Can I include my Schlage smart lock in a Google routine?

With Google Assistant, you can create routines that allow you to trigger multiple actions with a single command. For example, “OK Google, go on vacation” can turn off the lights, adjust the thermostat, lock your Schlage smart deadbolt and take care of many other tasks before you hit the road. Unlocking is not supported in Google Routines.

So, you received a new smart home device for Christmas? Here’s a list of resources to help you get connected with your Schlage smart lock quickly and easily.

We know a deadbolt might be a bit of a strange Christmas gift. But we also know it happens (and we thank you). More likely, perhaps, you got a new smart home hub like Samsung SmartThings, Wink, Apple HomeKit™ or Nexia for the holidays. Maybe it’s a new voice control assistant like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant that you want to sync with your Schlage smart lock. Here’s a list of resources to help you get connected quickly and easily.

Before you can sync your devices, make sure the lock is properly installed on your door and that you have the smartphone app that coincides with your hub and lock. You may need to create an account and complete some initial start-up steps via the app before pairing your devices. Find step-by-step interactive installation instructions for the Schlage Encode, Schlage Connect and Schlage Sense deadbolts online.

    Now let’s get connected.

    Schlage smart locks.

    Samsung SmartThings

Why pair SmartThings with the Schlage Connect™ Smart Deadbolt?

    • Let in trusted friends and family or secure the deadbolt if you forgot by locking and unlocking your door from anywhere using the SmartThings app

    • Gain peace of mind by checking the status of your lock from your smartphone

    • Get app alerts when a user code is entered so you know who is coming and going from your home

    • More advanced features with the Schlage Connect lock with Z-Wave Plus
