There are a few ways to set up your devices to control your Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt with Apple home keys via your Apple Watch or iPhone.

Setting up the Schlage Encode Plus deadbolt in Apple Home app

If your Schlage Encode Plus deadbolt is already set up with the Schlage Home app, you’ll next need to pair it with HomeKit. From the Schlage Home app, select Works With from the dropdown menu and add HomeKit. Follow the instructions in the app. When it asks you to Add Accessory, you can tap your phone to the interior side of the lock on the HomeKit label or manually type in the HomeKit setup code found on the inside of the lock’s interior. Once the lock has been found and paired with HomeKit, select Yes when it asks if you want to use home keys. It will then ask if you want to use Express Mode. This mode allows you to unlock doors by holding your iOS device near the lock without first authenticating your iPhone or Watch with face or touch ID. You can choose to enable or disable Express Mode. Complete the setup process by following the final steps in the Schlage Home app.

If you choose to control your Schlage Encode Plus deadbolt using the Apple Home app only, open the Apple Home app on your phone and choose Add Accessory. Locate the HomeKit setup label on the inside of the interior portion of the lock and tap your phone to that label. Alternatively, you can manually enter the HomeKit setup code shown on the label. When prompted, select Add to Home. Put the lock into pairing mode by pressing the black button on the inside of the lock’s interior. When the blue light flashes slowly, tap your phone to the lock to pair or choose to enter the HomeKit setup code manually. From here, you can follow the steps provided in the app.

Setting up the Schlage Sense deadbolt in Apple Home app

Open the Apple Home app on your iPhone and choose Add Accessory. Locate the HomeKit setup label on the inside of the interior portion of the lock or Quick Start Guide and scan the HomeKit QR code. Alternatively, you can manually enter the HomeKit setup code shown on the label. When prompted, select Add to Home.

If setting up from the Schlage Home app after using the guided interactive instructions, choose “Continue with HomeKit.” Once you’ve chosen the “Continue with HomeKit” option, follow the instructions provided in the Schlage Home app.

Apple TV^®, iPad^® or HomePod

The Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt and Schlage Encode Plus Smart Deadbolt are also compatible with a variety of Apple devices, including Apple TV, iPad and HomePod via HomeKit, which allow a more options for access control and home automation. Why pair one of these Apple home hub devices with the Schlage Sense lock or Schlage Encode Plus lock in your Apple Home app?

Because of its built-in WiFi, you don’t need a smart hub to connect your Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt or Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt with an Alexa-enabled device. To start using your Schlage Encode locks with Alexa, access the Alexa app on your smartphone, choose the Schlage Home skill and follow the instructions in the app.

Door preparation

Before we get started, be sure your door is properly drilled and aligned with this door prep checklist. This will help to ensure installation goes smoothly and the deadbolt is as secure as possible.

Next, collect the tools you need to install your door hardware. All you need is a tape measure and a #2 Phillips Head screwdriver. Keep in mind that an electric drill is not recommended for installation as it can easily strip the screws and damage your lock.

Deadbolt parts checklist

Once you've gathered your tools, you're ready to get started installing your deadbolt lock. The first step is to ensure you have all parts. Here's a checklist to help.

Deadbolt installation instructions

The latch comes with a pre-attached rectangular faceplate. If you’re using the rectangular faceplate, continue to Step 2 now.

If you need to replace it with the round drive-in faceplate, follow steps a-c below. You'll need a flat head screwdriver, hammer and block of wood with this setup.

a. Remove faceplate by gently prying it away from the rest of the bolt with a flat head screwdriver.

b. Twist and remove remaining support plate.

c. Install round drive-in faceplate simply by snapping it into place.

a. Remove the attachment screw located on the interior side of the outside housing.

b. Rotate and remove the bracket.

Testing the lock

1. It doesn’t latch or lock right

Obviously, if your door hardware is broken – your toddler pulled the lever off the door, you can’t get the key in or out of the deadbolt – it’s time to replace it. But other times we fool ourselves into thinking it’s good enough as it is. Maybe the deadbolt sticks a little bit. Or maybe it latches, but only when we tug on it and hold it closed while we turn the key.

In some of these cases, the issue might be with the door or frame. Rather than investing in new hardware, try making a few adjustments for when your lock doesn’t fit your door. In other cases, upgrading to a higher quality door knob or lever is the answer. The bolt could be sticking because it’s made of sub-par materials and no amount of lubricant or adjusting its position will fix it. Again, choose hardware that’s been tested to avoid these pitfalls. Look for the BHMA rating. One that’s graded A and certified highest in Durability is a sign you can trust that hardware to last.

2. You’ve had a life-changing event

Your home should adapt with your lifestyle, not necessarily the other way around. Consider how you use rooms differently as you transition from being a childless couple to having a newborn, from raising a toddler, then a teen and finally returning to being empty nesters. A room could need different door hardware in each of those life stages. You might have wanted to be able to lock the door to your home office, but now that it’s a child’s room? Maybe not. When choosing door locks for toddlers, some families find it’s best to switch to a passage function so their little one doesn’t lock themselves in a room during a fit of the Terrible Twos.

If you’ve had a change in marital status, new hardware might be in order. New members of the household will need keys when you blend families . This could be a good time to switch to electronic locks, especially if you’re concerned about kids losing a spare key. With their own access codes, they can come and go securely, while still feeling welcome in their new home. And while it’s not fun to think about, if someone has moved out, it might put your mind at ease to change the locks then, too.

3. You need security you can trust

Locks for your front door, and even your back door and side entrance if we’re honest, should protect what matters most. To help keep your home and family secure, make sure exterior deadbolts check the following boxes:

Please note that if you choose to use your Apple device, you will need to be near the lock to activate a new code unless you’re synced with a compatible Apple home hub. • If you want to schedule codes – have them active on a recurring or temporary basis – you’ll want to use the Schlage Home app. This way, you can set the codes to be active only on Wednesdays from 2-5 p.m. or on June 10-15, for example. Because there’s no need to choose between the Schlage mobile experience or Apple HomeKit, the iPhone afficionado in your family gets all their favorite functionality and Apple automations while the person who prefers Android can do the same.

Inactive Handleset

Just like inactive interior knobs and levers, inactive handlesets are used as decorative door pulls. You see these most often when you have a double entry door with one locking door and the other primarily for show. When you shop for inactive handlesets, don’t be fooled. It often looks like a deadbolt is included, but that piece is just for aesthetics and is not actually a working lock. For full locking capabilities, you’ll choose one of the options above for the active door.

Because the main appeal of an inactive handleset is its style, it should come as no surprise that we offer Schlage Custom inactive handlesets.  Crossbore

- The hole’s diameter must measure 2-1/8”. Try this hack for enlarging crossbore holes from This Old House.

 Backset

- The distance from the edge of the door to the center line of the crossbore should measure 2-3/8” or 2-3/4”.

 Latch bore

- The hole on the edge of the door, where the deadbolt or latch enters, should measure 1” in diameter.

 Thickness

- The door should be between 1-3/8” and 1-3/4” thick.

 Doorjamb

- The latch bore hole in the doorjamb should measure at least 7/8" in diameter and a minimum of a 1/2" deep. A 7/8” spade bit can be used to drill a larger hole, if necessary.

Unfortunately, if some measurements such as the backset and door thickness do not match up, you may require the assistance of a carpenter or need to purchase a replacement door.

Proper preparation goes a long way toward making sure any DIY project goes off without a hitch. Installing door hardware is no different. Making sure your door is strong, free of cracks or warping, and otherwise undamaged is also an important step in helping to keep your home safe. Have you ever left the house in a hurry, and later wondered whether you accidentally left the door unlocked behind you? With so many things to juggle in life, it’s happened to us all.

That got us thinking – what if you never had to wonder whether your door was unlocked again? What if you could lock it from wherever you are? And wouldn’t you like to receive smartphone notifications whenever the lock is used so you can keep track of who’s going in and out and when?

So we designed the Schlage Sense® Smart Deadbolt so that users could have this functionality – if they want it. Smart lock beginners who want to benefit from the lock’s basic features can do that out of the box with just a smartphone, no need for a home automation system or other smart accessories.

However, if you’re looking for the convenience and peace of mind that comes with being able to access your lock from anywhere, there are multiple options available for doing this – and it’s easy to choose the right one for you.

Here are the basics:

Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter option: Android smartphones + iPhone

If you want to use both iPhone® and Android smartphones with your lock, you’ll want a Schlage Sense® WiFi Adapter.

The Adapter is a simple wall plug-in that connects your lock to your WiFi network so you can lock and unlock it from anywhere and receive activity notifications. It’s easy to set up – plug it in within Bluetooth range of the lock (usually about 40 feet), and use the Schlage® Home app to connect the Adapter to your home Wi-Fi network. Then pair it with your lock.

As long as your Adapter stays plugged into power, connected to WiFi and within Bluetooth range of the lock, you’ll be able to access it using a compatible iPhone, iPad®, iPod touch® or Android smartphone from anywhere.

Keep in mind that while the Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter will work with a compatible iOS device, it does not work with Apple HomeKit® and is not compatible with features like Siri® or the Apple Home app.

Apple HomeKit option: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch only

If you have an Apple TV® or use iPhone, iPad or iPod touch in your household, you might prefer the Apple HomeKit setup option. If your lock is up to date with the latest firmware (use the Schlage Home app to check for updates), it will ask you simple questions at setup to determine whether this Apple HomeKit option is best for you.

If you set up your lock with the Apple HomeKit option, you can pair your lock with a compatible Apple TV and gain anywhere access using Apple HomeKit technology. You’ll still be able to control your lock and manage settings from anywhere with the Schlage Home app, plus your lock will work in tandem with other HomeKit-enabled devices in your home through the Apple Home app. You’ll also be able to use Siri to lock and unlock your door, and receive notifications when the lock is used (use the Schlage Home app to manage your notification settings).

Keep in mind that this option is intended for Apple HomeKit users and does not work with Android smartphones.

Here are the technical details:

We recommend an Apple TV 4th generation or an iPad with iOS 10.0 or higher. If you decide to use your iPad as your Apple HomeKit hub (a new functionality offered by Apple with iOS 10.0), the iPad must stay at home powered on and connected to WiFi just as an Apple TV would be.

You’ll also want to make sure that the Apple TV/iPad is set up with the same iCloud and iTunes account information as your iPhone.

When you're within Bluetooth range of the lock, connect your lock with the app.

Tap “Begin Update” or go to Lock Settings > Information and tap the firmware version information to request an update.

The firmware will be updated over the next several minutes.

If the lock is currently set up with an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, first delete the lock from the account by going to Lock Settings and tapping Delete Lock.

Then, use the Schlage Home app to pair the lock again. If adding the lock from an iOS device, select “Explore Other Options” and then “Set up with Schlage system.”

A firmware update may be required, after which you will need to restart the “Add a lock” process and select the Schlage system.

Once setup is complete, the lock will be compatible with both Android smartphones and iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and can be paired with the Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter.

1. Will current Schlage Sense® Smart Deadbolt models be compatible with Amazon Alexa?

Yes, all current Schlage Sense lock models are compatible with Amazon Alexa devices through the Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter (sold separately), which is perfect for remote access for split-device households or owners who haven’t chosen a home automation system yet.

2. What hubs does the Schlage Sense lock work with?

The Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt is compatible with Alexa-enabled devices via the Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter. The Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter does not work with Apple HomeKit® or support the use of Siri^® voice control.

3. How do I connect with Amazon Alexa?

To connect your Schlage Sense lock with an Alexa-enabled device, plug the Schlage Sense WiFi Adapter into power at home. The WiFi Adapter needs to be within Bluetooth range of the lock (about 40 feet). Then use the Schlage Home app to pair your deadbolt with the adapter and connect it to your home WiFi.

Once the lock is connected to your home WiFi, you are ready to complete the setup within the Alexa app.

• Log in to your Alexa app using your Amazon password.
  
  
• Enable the Schlage Home skill in the Alexa app.
  
  
• Link your Schlage account to your Alexa account. This will give the skill permission to access the lock.

To enable the unlocking feature – this is initially disabled by default for your security – create a four-digit PIN in the Alexa app now.

4. What can the Schlage Sense lock and Amazon Alexa do?

After connecting the devices, you can ask Alexa to lock and unlock the door, and check the status of your Schlage Sense deadbolt. This offers the peace of mind and convenience of knowing your home is always locked and protected by one of the strongest, most convenient locks on the market.

Voice unlocking is one the newest functions available in the integration between Schlage and Amazon Alexa. The feature was made possible through technological improvements that now require Alexa to authenticate the user’s identity prior to unlocking the door. The additional step helps to maintain the superior security you expect from Schlage while still enjoying the convenience of voice activation. 5. What can't the Schlage Sense lock and Amazon Alexa do?

Already trusted in over 40 million homes, Schlage always aims to create carefully designed products that bring the possibilities and potential of every door in your home to life – keeping you safe and making life easier and more connected. We are unwilling to compromise that, especially when it comes to smart home integration. With this in mind, Amazon Alexa is not enabled to check battery status or create/maintain secured codes. This ensures that control of these features remains directly in your hands rather than relying on third-party components.
